Rain has cleared off to the east, and clouds are clearing behind the
front. Satellite shows a layer of lower clouds developing behind,
however, which will move into the Tennessee Valley probably around
3-4 AM. These will still be around through mid-morning, but should
break up by this afternoon for mostly sunny skies. High temperatures
today should reach into the low-to-mid 70s, depending on how quickly
we can clear out the clouds. If they hang on longer than 1 PM, we may
end up being too warm with our forecast. Southerly winds will also
help to advect in warmer temperatures despite the cloud cover.

River Valley. This will be the primary weather producer for the next
couple days, with a significant threat for severe weather Thursday
into Thursday night for a good part of Mississippi and Alabama.

This afternoon into this evening we will start to see the warm front
lift north into Central Alabama. During the evening hours, this warm
front lifts north into Tennessee, however a secondary "warm front"
develops along the leading edge of the developing and strengthening
low-level jet, which will provide the elevated instability as well
as the forcing mechanism for elevated showers and thunderstorms
developing and progressing northward after midnight tonight.
Meanwhile, a broad area of upper-level divergence can be seen at
250-mb associated with the right-entrance region of the upper-level
jet. This direct thermal circulation will likely couple with the
developing low-level jet to enhance ascent and rainfall efficiency
over the Tennessee Valley northward overnight into Thursday morning.
Somewhere, either in far northern Alabama and/or Middle Tennessee, is
going to get dumped on with a lot of rain with this frontal boundary
Thursday morning, and models are likely under-doing QPF.

As we go through Thursday morning, the next feature to watch will be
the secondary LLJ that develops ahead of the frontal boundary
starting over the southern half of Mississippi and moving into
Central and Northern Alabama around 18-20Z. Not only will this LLJ
provide the ample shear for tornadic supercells during the afternoon
in Mississippi into at least Central Alabama, the northern edge of
this LLJ will decide how far north the warm sector and severe
weather/tornado threat gets. This looks likely to be decided sometime
around 11-3 PM. Some hi-res models have this lifting north into
southern Tennessee, putting most if not all of our forecast area in
the warm-sector and therefore under a significant threat for damaging
winds, hail and tornadoes. Meanwhile, other hi-res models have it
making it right about to the Tennessee River/Huntsville area, and
keeping the severe threat confined south of this line. Areas north of
the leading edge of the LLJ, wherever it sets up, will have more of
a threat from flash flooding/heavy rainfall as well as isolated
strong to damaging winds. Areas south of this line will have the
whole gambit of threats including tornadoes, large hail, damaging
winds, and locally heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding.

Model soundings in this southern region have ample CAPE and 0-1 km
SRH values > 300-400 m2/s2. This will be a strong environment for
supercell development out ahead of the cold front. Hi-res models are
starting to model the shape of the event, with what looks like a line
of supercells during the afternoon out ahead of the cold front, then
a QLCS will follow along the cold front. Both rounds will be capable
of producing damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. This will
put our primary window for severe weather around 2-3 PM to 10 PM.

Once the cold front moves through Friday night, we should see clouds
gradually clearing, leaving us with a partly cloudy to mostly sunny
day on Friday, with highs in the mid-70s. A lingering stationary
front set up to our south will continue to hang around as cooler air
left behind from the low pressure system hangs around to our north,
and we continue to see warmer Gulf air to our south. This feature
will play a role in our weather over the weekend.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Tuesday)

A warm front will lift back north into the Tennessee Valley on
Saturday and serve as a focus for scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon/evening and into the
overnight hours as the boundary stalls across north Alabama. The
biggest concern will be the threat for flooding as we're checking off
several boxes for efficient rain-producing showers and storms.
Namely, the advection of a very moist air mass (PWATs around 1.6" per
progged KHSV sounding at 00z Sunday), a stalled boundary nearby, and
plenty of instability (either surface-based or elevated) to sustain
updrafts on the deeper, more organized convection that develops.

It's unclear exactly how much destabilization will occur during this
window, but guidance continues to support the advection of a warm,
moist, and increasingly unstable air mass (with some appreciable
mid-level lapse rates). One caveat could be that we remain cloudy
and somewhat rain-cooled so that the inversion remains in place for
most of the day, keeping storms more elevated in nature. If the
boundary nudges a little further north, strong southerly flow will
quickly advect that more unstable air mass into the region, however.
Still a bit of uncertainty here. Regardless, am confidence enough
that we'll see plenty of thunderstorm activity Saturday into Saturday
night along and south of the warm front and given the aforementioned
thermodynamics and good (albeit more unidirectional bulk shear),
strong to severe storms will be possible -- especially during the
afternoon and evening hours. Damaging winds and hail would be the
main concerns with this activity, especially if storms can become
surface-based.

A stronger, upper-trough over the Great lakes and Ohio Valley should
be deep enough to pick up this front and push it back south and east
of the area for good on Sunday. As a result, we should see showers
and storms taper off quickly from northwest to southeast on Sunday
morning. By the afternoon, a cooler, drier air mass will advect into
the region. Expect cooler temperatures on Sunday and Monday as a
result for the northerly flow. Thus despite plenty of sunshine,
highs in the 60s will be favored both days. As winds veer back to
the S/SE on Tuesday, a warm up back into the 70s will occur -- with
continued dry weather as high pressure will be situated just to our
east.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)

There is a line of high clouds hanging up across all but northwestern
Alabama this morning. This is helping to keep HSV VFR this morning,
but a layer of low clouds has moved into MSL and is encroaching from
the west. Expect MVFR conditions to move into HSV over the next
couple hours. These lower clouds will hang around through much of the
morning, with models clearing them out around 17-18Z. Once these
clouds clear, we will be VFR through the evening hours with
increasing high clouds late. Models bring showers and thunderstorms
up from the south after midnight tonight, probably closer to 08Z, but
could be as early as 5-6Z. Strong winds and hail are possible with
stronger storms, but the better chance for this will be later
Thursday morning beyond the TAF period.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north central Alabama,
northeast Alabama, northwest Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

The probability for widespread hazardous weather is low.

Heavy rainfall and a few isolated strong to severe storms are
possible overnight tonight after midnight. Main threats will be hail
up to quarter-size, localized damaging winds, and flash flooding
possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

Severe storms are expected Thursday and Thursday night, especially
starting during the afternoon through Thursday night. All modes of
severe weather will be possible including tornadoes, damaging winds,
large hail, and heavy rainfall. A strong tornado can't be ruled out.

Heavy rainfall from this system Wednesday night through Thursday
night will lead to flash flooding, along with rises and possible
flooding of local area streams and rivers.

This pattern remains active with another system bringing in the
chance for strong to severe storms Saturday into Saturday night.
