Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 114 AM PDT Tue Jul 6 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Temperatures will begin warming across the region as a strong ridge builds during the week. The ridge will continue to strengthen into the weekend. At which time, we'll see an extended period of dangerously hot temperatures across the district through at least the end of the 7-day forecast period. && .DISCUSSION... A very dry airmass remains over the region as noted on water vapor imagery. For this week the big theme is the ramp up to some extreme heat by this weekend and its effects. Ensemble forecast models continue to show a high pressure center over Arizona slowly migrating westward as the week progresses. The center of the high is well agreed upon by both ensembles and the latest deterministic runs of the GFS and ECMWF and it is highly likely it will end up over western Nevada or even Eastern California on Saturday and Sunday. This location and the projected depth of the anticyclone at just around 6000 meters at the 500 millibar pressure level suggests plenty of 110 or greater highs in the San Joaquin Valley and foothills and 115+ highs in the Indian Wells Valley. Areas in the Kern County Mountains will exceed 100 degrees thus the heat will affect much of the populace of the Central California Interior. Some example probabilities include: Fresno: Hitting or exceeding 110 degrees, 25% on Friday, 38% on Saturday, 50% on Sunday, and 38% on Monday. China Lake: Hitting or exceeding 117 degrees, 50% Saturday through Monday. The all time record high for China Lake is 119 degrees and 118 at Inyokern. Other than heat, the only other concern is whether any monsoonal moisture will advect into Central California on the southeast flow that will prevail around the big high pressure center. This scenario is usually poorly modeled thus eyes will need to stay focused on satellite imagery for any transitory easterly waves or moisture fetches that could move into the forecast area. Confidence is very high in extreme heat...just marginal for any monsoonal thunderstorms and or clouds that could keep overnight lows elevated in the middle of the heat wave. Of note, guidance is suggesting Fresno will have several nights of 80+ lows for the upcoming weekend. The same is progged at Bakersfield so extreme heat risk values are pretty much a slam dunk. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail elsewhere throughout Central California for the next 24 hours. && .AIR QUALITY ISSUES... On Tuesday July 6 2021...
