...HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM PDT THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Afternoon high temperatures between 98 to 103. Local 
  areas up to 106 in the coastal hills and lower Sierra 
  foothills from Fresno County southward into Kern County.

* WHERE...The Central San Joaquin Valley including Fresno, 
  Kings, Tulare and Kern county north of the Bakersfield area. 
  Also included are the Southern Sierra Foothills and portions 
  of the coastal range.

* WHEN...Until 8 PM PDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out
of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

.UPDATE...Update for air quality section.

.SYNOPSIS...
Widespread triple digit heat can be expected in the
San Joaquin Valley, lower foothills and the Kern County desert
during the next few afternoons. High temperatures will trend a bit
lower later this week through the weekend but still remain well
above normal. Otherwise, dry weather will prevail over the district
for the next several days.

.DISCUSSION...
Broad Pacific ridging is firmly in place over the southwest CONUS
and is the reason for the much above normal temperatures across
the region. To address the heat threat, an Excessive heat
Warning is in effect until 8 PM Wednesday for most parts of the
the San Joaquin Valley. However, with slightly cooler
temperatures on Wednesday the northern parts of the SJV in the
County Warning Area (CWA) the Excessive Heat Warning will become a
Heat Advisory and will remain through 8 PM Wednesday. An Excessive
Heat Warning has been issued from Noon Wednesday until 8 PM
tomorrow night for the Kern desert areas.

Many areas will see high temperatures from 100 to 106 degrees in
the SJV and 102 to 109 degrees in the desert areas of Kern County
on Wednesday. Now some may question why all the hubbub for highs
that would pale in comparison for August high temperatures. Well
there is a higher risk for heat illness when people are not
acclimated to the hot temperatures, which we have luckily been
spared from the heat this spring with a cooler than normal run. So
the heat with this event will be more taxing on peoples and
animals systems. That is why it is very important to make sure
that we especially stay hydrated and take more frequent breaks
from the heat over the next couple of days.

The hottest temperatures for many parts of the San Joaquin Valley
and Kern desert areas will continue through Wednesday however
only slight (and I use this term very loosely) cooling will begin
on late Wednesday and continue into the weekend as a Pacific
Northwest system begins to squeeze the ridging southward and
bring lower synoptic heights to the region. The approach of the
system will also bring slight chances of afternoon showers and
even some thunderstorms to the higher elevations of the Sierra and
the northern parts of the Kern County mountains each afternoon
through Thursday. Even with the slight cooling taking place,
temperatures will remain about 10 to 15 degrees above normal
levels through Sunday.

As the trough approaches the region from the north on Monday high
temperatures will cool to around normal levels which currently
sits at 87 for Fresno and 88 degrees at Bakersfield. The good news
is the longer term guidance indicates that this troughing over
the west coast will remain at least into the end of next week and
will keep the hot temperatures at bay. This will be good news for
our electricity budgets, at least in the short term.

VFR conditions can be expected throughout the central California interior
for at least the next 24 hours.

On Wednesday June 2 2021... Unhealthy for sensitive groups in
Fresno... Kern... Kings and Tulare Counties and Sequoia National
