...Forecast flooding changed from Minor to Moderate severity and
increased in duration for the following rivers in Texas...
Tres Palacios River near Midfield affecting Wharton and Matagorda
Counties.
Lavaca River near Edna affecting Jackson County.
For the Tres Palacios River...including Midfield...Moderate flooding
is forecast.
For the Sandy Creek...including Cordele...Moderate flooding is
forecast.
For the Lavaca River...including Komensky, Breslau, Hallettsville,
Edna...Moderate flooding is forecast.

* Flood stage is 18.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast...The river is expected to rise above flood stage late
tomorrow morning to a crest of 20.0 feet Tuesday morning. It will
then fall below flood stage late Wednesday morning.
* Impact...At 19.0 feet, Moderate lowland flooding begins. Several
roads and bridges in the floodplain are flooded and dangerous and
livestock in the floodplain are threatened.

* Recent Activity...The maximum river stage in the 24 hours ending
at 3:15 PM CDT Sunday was 23.3 feet.
* Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 26.3 feet
early Tuesday afternoon. It will then fall below flood stage late
Wednesday evening.
* Impact...At 25.0 feet, Moderate lowland flooding begins with the
river one third of a mile wide near the Highway 59 bridge flooding
secondary roads and bridges along the river. Livestock are
isolated and potentially drown.

after midnight tonight to a crest of 27.8 feet tomorrow evening.
It will then fall below flood stage early Wednesday morning.
* Impact...At 28.0 feet, Water is over the road on FM 1468 near
Clemville, FM 2431 east of Midfield, and FM 2853 southeast of
Blessing all in Matagorda County with homes in the subdivisions of
El Dorado Country upstream and Oak Grove and Tres Palacios Oaks
downstream threatened.

* Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 135.0 feet
this morning.
* Impact...At 135.0 feet, Minor lowland flooding continues as
significant backwater up Thomas Lake floods the lowest areas in
the Green Rich Shore Subdivision in Walker County with the boat
ramp completely inundated. The lowest lying areas in the Deep
River Plantation Subdivision and FM 980 northwest of Riverside are
threatened.

.UPDATE...
Moisture axis looks to be setting up largely as expected, with
a hose of generally - thankfully - light to moderate rain pointed
at the Matagorda Bay area. However, there is an area of rain rates
pushing 1 inch per hour just offshore, and should that become more
of the rule over the flash flood watch area, we could see the
reason why we have a flash flood watch in effect become more of an
issue, thanks to the soaked grounds from a long week of rainy
conditions down there.
Beyond that, haven't made much in the way of changes to the
forecast other than to make minor tweaks to better reflect
observations. Though a relatively small change, have also gone
ahead and pulled down high temps northeast of the main moisture
channel. Though outside the best plume of moisture, clouds and
rain showers are still pretty common, and will likely hold high
temps a few degrees lower than we had.

.AVIATION [18Z TAF Issuance]...
"Difficult" is the polite term to describe the ceiling forecast
for the rest of this afternoon. CIGs will probably range from
mid-MVFR (015-020) to very clearly VFR (as high as 090!). Have
tried best to match the forecast to reality, but amendments may be
needed.
Beyond that, the big picture idea of a dreary forecast is on
track. Overnight, bring widespread MVFR back to the area - and
some guidance hints at high IFR ceilings, so that may be something
to watch for. Then tomorrow looks a whole heckuva lot like today.

.PREV DISCUSSION /Issued 646 AM CDT Sun May 23 2021/...
.SHORT TERM [Through Monday Night]...
High pressure continues to sit over the southeastern US ushering in
moist southeasterly flow into our region with an upper level low
located near south Texas. Weak shortwaves embedded in the flow aloft
combined with PWATs between 2 and 2.2 inches will lead to another
day of light to moderate scattered showers. Areas west of I-45 will
have higher chances of precipitation as the high pressure to the
east slowly begins to expand westward. Have continued the Flash
Flood Watch for the southwestern counties because despite the light
to moderate rain rates, the ground is very saturated so FFG is
fairly low. Precipitation continues through tonight as the
aforementioned upper level low that has been down near south Texas
gets picked up by and absorbed into the southeasterly flow and
brought into our area. This will increase coverage of showers and
thunderstorms through Monday evening across the area. Rainfall
totals will generally be up to an additional 1 to 2 inches today
across the southwestern counties, and then up to an additional 1
inch across the entire area on Monday. The showers will be fairly
scattered in nature, so some areas may only get a trace to half an
inch. Lack of upper level support will lead to a decrease in shower
activity Monday night, though cannot out rule some isolated light
showers due to continued high PWATs.
Temperatures through the short term will continue to be fairly
persistent. High temperatures will be in the low 80s this afternoon,
and then slightly cooler on Monday thanks to the increased
precipitation coverage. Low temperatures tonight and Monday night be
around 70.

.LONG TERM [Tuesday through Sunday]...
Shower and thunderstorm chances will remain in the forecast on Tuesday
and Wednesday as weak disturbances continue to move across the area.
By Wednesday, mid/upper level ridging does begin to build into the
state, and this should end up helping Wednesday's rain coverage to be
a little more scattered or maybe even isolated and mainly in the
afternoon. The ridge then strengthens into the state for the remainder
of the week resulting in a dry forecast with warming temperatures.
At this time, next weekend looks to feature a weakening of the ridge
probably allowing for some mainly isolated afternoon shower and
thunderstorm development across parts of our central and northern
counties. 42

Elevated winds and seas will persist for the next several days with
slightly lower levels anticipated heading into Monday night and
Tuesday. Will carry a combination of Caution and Advisory flags
today, and some of them (especially the 20-60 nm waters) will
probably need to be extended into tonight and Monday. Periods of
showers and thunderstorms can be expected through Tuesday.
Tide levels will remain elevated. 42

With yesterday's rainfall, PSX's monthly total now stands at
15.39 inches which is 12.83 inches above normal. Dating back to
1943 and with nine days still left in the month, this total ranks
as their wettest May on record (second place is 13.23 inches set
in 1972). This total also currently ranks as their 9th wettest
month on record (dating back to February 1943). Their wettest
month on record is 24.28 inches set in October 1949.
