Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 950 AM HST Wed Jul 14 2021 .SYNOPSIS... An area of high pressure will remain north of the area through the remainder of the week and on into early next week. Moderate to breezy trade winds will persist throughout the forecast period. Clouds and passing showers will favor windward and mauka areas with the trade winds sufficiently strong enough to blow some brief passing showers over to select leeward areas at times. && .DISCUSSION... At the surface, an east to west oriented area of high pressure is centered far to the north of the state. This places the area in a moderate to breezy trade wind environment. Little change in this overall weather scenario is expected through the remainder of the week and on into the weekend. However guidance does indicate that trade winds may increase slightly over the weekend as the high shifts a bit south tightening up the pressure gradient across the area. Winds speeds should remain a bit elevated into early next week as a new high builds in to our north. Aloft, a weak mid level trough will be passing over the area today through Thursday raising inversion heights just a bit. This along with an area of higher precipitable water values moving across the area, will allow for slightly higher chances for showers to fall mainly over windward and mauka areas. The trade winds are sufficiently strong enough to blow a few brief showers over to leeward areas at times. A weak mid level ridge will move overhead on Friday with a bit more stable airmass in place and less shower activity expected. Another trough is expected to move over the area from the east over the weekend. An uptick in shower activity can't be ruled out and will be highly dependent on incoming moisture availability. However, heavy showers are not expected as moisture depth will remain limited. && .AVIATION... High pressure north of the islands will produce moderate to breezy trade winds for at least the next week. A weak mid level trough will slowly pass over the state today and raise the inversion to around 10,000 ft, especially within a pocket of moisture that will affect Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai through the afternoon. AIRMET Sierra is in effect for mountain obscuration for Kauai and Oahu, and VFR conditions will prevail over other portions of the island chain. This AIRMET will likely be dropped by evening as the mid level trough departs and a building mid level ridge pushes the inversion back down to around 7,000 ft. AIRMET Tango remains in place for low level turbulence over and downwind of terrain on all islands. Since the inversion will remain weakened today, conditions will be border line, but expect a stronger inversion to favor increased low level turbulence Thursday. && .MARINE... A weak trough of low pressure will briefly lower the trades below Small Craft Advisory (SCA) levels this morning, before the trades strengthen this evening, bringing SCA level winds back to the typically wind waters around Maui and the Big Island. Moderate to locally strong trades will then hold in place through Thursday night, with the trades increasing further Friday through early next week, allowing SCA conditions to expand to additional marine zones. South shore surf will trend up Friday through the weekend as a new south swell fills in, with surf heights nearing the summertime average over the weekend. This swell is expected to gradually taper off next week. As the trades strengthen, wind swell will be on the increase Thursday, then rise to slightly above normal levels over the weekend.
