Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 1155 PM EST Sat Nov 20 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will slowly slide offshore tonight. Low pressure will approach from the west Sunday into Sunday night, crossing New England on Monday. The system will continue east through the Canadian Maritimes late Monday and Tuesday followed by high pressure Wednesday into Thursday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/... 11:55PM Update... Temperatures are rising along the coastline as south-southwesterly winds freshen ahead of an approaching cold front. Temps have mostly held steady inland as cloud cover continues to thicken across the area. Otherwise the forecast remains on track for tonight. 8:50PM Update... Some spots managed to work in some radiational cooling between breaks in the clouds over the last few hours, while other areas have remained milder due to clouds, light winds, or both. Tried to account for these trends with the latest obs and cooler guidance for tonight. Not expecting temps to move much over the next several hours in most locations. Along the coast will likely see temps start to creep back up with an increasing onshore flow, and cooling a few more degrees across the northern valleys overnight. Otherwise increasing mid to high levels clouds continue to overtake the region, but any precipitation holds off until tomorrow. 6:00PM Update... Mainly focused on tweaking the winds for the next couple of days with this update. Clouds continue to stream into the area, which has slowed the fall of temperatures this evening. These clouds are expected to keep lows warmer than last night's. Otherwise, forecast looks to be on track with a fairly quiet night in store. Previously... High pressure south of the area will slide to the east tonight as a return southerly flow increases behind the high. We will remain under the influence of the high this evening with a clear sky followed by gradually increasing clouds. A weak upper shortwave will carry a mid level warm frontal boundary into the region late tonight into Sunday morning. This will continue to bring increasing clouds followed by a cloudy and milder day on Sunday. There will be small chance for light showers or some drizzle, mainly along the coast on Sunday. Otherwise, Sunday should be mostly rain free. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... Our focus going into early next week will be on a vigorous trough digging into the Great Lakes Sunday night which will be supporting a frontal system pushing east, out ahead of the trough through the Ohio Valley. This will bring an increasing southerly wind, thickening clouds, and rain pushing into the area Sunday evening. The heaviest rain will be late Sunday night into Monday morning supported by surface frontal convergence and dynamic lift ahead of the trough. This will be a fast moving progressive frontal system. Rain may be briefly heavy early Monday morning but should then be tapering off by early Monday afternoon. Total rain amounts around a half inch are likely. The sky will clear from west to east late Monday afternoon into Monday evening as the front continues to the east and high pressure begins to build in from the west. High pressure continuing to build in on Tuesday will bring sunshine to the coastal plain with sunshine mixed with some patchy stratocumulus in the mountains along with a gusty cool NW breeze. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The axis of high pressure will build in Tuesday night bringing a clear and cold night with lows in the 20s down to the coast and teens across the mountains. High pressure centered to our southwest and ridging northeast across New England will bring a sunny and tranquil day on Wednesday. The ridge of high pressure will remain over the area Wednesday night into Thursday maintaining clear to partly cloudy and tranquil conditions over the region. Our focus Thursday night into Friday will be on another trough digging into the Great Lakes. Clouds may begin to increase Thursday night as the high over the region begins to break down and some mid level moisture lifts into the area ahead of the approaching frontal system. The front will push into the area Friday possibly with some showers. A secondary low may begin to form along the front to our east late Friday into Friday night. Current long range models show this new low rather progressive, lifting quickly up to the north and consolidating with the original low well north of the region. If this occurs, dry and colder conditions can be expected going into next weekend. Some of the coldest air of the season so far and a bit of moisture lingering in the upper trough may bring snow shower to the mountains next weekend while the coastal areas remain dry. && .AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Short Term... VFR conditions are expected to persist tonight into Sunday, possibly lowering to MVFR late Sunday as a low to mid deck moves in. Winds will be light southerly. Long Term... IFR conditions in low clouds and SSW LLWS are likely Sunday night through Monday. Conditions should improve to VFR from W to E Monday evening and be VFR Monday night. VFR conditions are expected Tuesday through Thursday with light winds as high pressure builds over.
