Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Gray ME 1013 AM EDT Fri May 28 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Cool Canadian high pressure will build into the region today with much drier and cooler air. Showers push into the southern portion of the area later today and tonight as low pressure passes south of New England. The showers will persist into Saturday morning with very cool temperatures for late May. There will be a brief break in the rainfall late Saturday through early Sunday before another low pressure system brings a renewed threat of rain and cooler temperatures for Sunday night and Memorial Day. Drier and warmer conditions arrive for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... 10 AM Update: Trimmed temperatures a bit given morning observational trends and near term guidance. Otherwise...no significant changes to the forecast through the afternoon as it remains cool with increasing clouds and rain edging into southwestern NH this afternoon...likely reaching the ASH-MHT corridor towards sunset. 7 AM EDT Update...Forecast is in good shape this morning with just some small tweaks to the temp and sky grids. Will allow the frost/freeze headlines to expire at 7 AM this morning as temps will quickly rebound to above freezing over the next hour. Plenty of high and mid level clouds streaming across the region and this will be the trend for the day. Cool start to the day with a very dry Canadian airmass firmly established across the region. Dewpoints will be extremely low today, especially across the interior with low 20s expected. This will allow for RH values to drop down into the 20 percent range away from the coast. Meanwhile mid and upper level clouds will be streaming into the area ahead of an approaching mid- Atlantic surface low and associated warm front. The CWA will be the battle zone between the dry Canadian airmass to the north and expanding rain shield from the south. Rain will struggle at first due to the dry low levels with virga being the main story, but southern NH will begin to moisten up by late afternoon, but most of the moderate steady rain will hold off until the evening, especially across ME. Overall cool temps expected with highs in the low 60s for most of the area as 850mb temps are only +1C. && .SHORT TERM /SATURDAY/... Guidance continues to be on track for a sharp north/south QPF gradient across southern NH and into York County, ME. NBM is showing close to 1" of precip along the MA/NH border with a .1" of an inch in Plymouth. Looking like Northern NH, the Capital District and Western Maine Mtns will remain dry and only around a tenth of an inch for the Mid-coast region. Easterly onshore flow will develop tonight's the surface low tracks to our south and the cool Canadian surface high remains in place to our north across Quebec province. The combination of the cool airmass and onshore flow will bring very cool temperatures to start the Memorial Day weekend with highs only in the 50s. The good news is the rain should be ending for most areas in the morning hours but clouds will linger as the 500mb trough to the west cuts off over the Ohio. Should see some breaks in the clouds, especially across interior areas but should remain mostly cloud closer to the coast. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Complex system arrives for the long Holiday weekend. Models remain in improved agreement in regards to two areas of low pressure. The first system exits into the Canadian Maritimes Saturday night, bringing an end to the shower activity across southern portions of Maine and New Hampshire. By Sunday, a second area of low pressure will begin to move northward up the Mid Atlantic coastline. This will bring rain to the region by Sunday evening. The best chance for beneficial rains will be during the overnight hours Sunday night as 00Z guidance remains in relatively good agreement tracking low pressure up the New England coastline. The axis of heaviest rains will fall along the and near the coastline as well as southern New Hampshire. In terms of rainfall amounts, operational as well as model ensembles vary considerably from run to run with some members not bringing any precipitation at all to the region. In any case, there will be a sharp drop off in rainfall totals as you head into northern New Hampshire and the northern mountains of Maine. Temperatures will continue to be below normal for this time of the year. Some areas will not make it out of the upper 50s on Sunday. Models disagree as to how fast the system will eject out of the region on Monday. The Euro is the slowest bringing the trough out of the region. In any case, a few scattered showers will be possible during the day, however, all in all, it will be drier and milder. Drier air will continue to enter the region for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This will allow for a continued warming with temperatures in most area in the 70s for highs. && .AVIATION /07Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Short Term...MVFR cigs will begin by this evening for the southern TAF sites, with VFR conditions possible after 00Z at KMHT and KPSM due to moderate rain and low cigs. Further north TAF terminals will mostly stay VFR as ceilings remain higher. Conditions will improve during the day on Saturday with VFR conditions expected again with east to northeast winds. Long Term... Areas of IFR Saturday morning over southern areas in showers with MVFR north. MVFR to VFR conditions Saturday Afternoon into Sunday Morning. Areas of IFR return as rain develops late Sunday into Monday. && .AVIATION /14Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Short Term... Long Term... && .MARINE... Short Term...Canadian high pressure over the waters today will retreat to the north as an area of low pressure tracks south of the area tonight. Winds will shift to onshore flow tonight as the low passes to our south and increase out of the east. SCA conditions are expected by Saturday morning along with building seas. Long Term... SCA levels Saturday through Monday due to a prolonged NE flow resulting in northeast flow and building seas. Conditions will fall below SCA thresholds Tuesday and Wednesday as seas subside. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Astronomical tides remain high through this weekend. At this time...no significant surge is expected with low pressure passing well south of New England.
