Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak area of low pressure will pass south of New England
tonight...bringing a round of rain showers throughout the region
with fog redeveloping along the coastal plain. Skies will
slowly clear on Thursday yielding mild temperatures before skies
cloud up again Thursday night with rain expected Friday.
Another brief respite from precipitation is expected Saturday
before another low pressure moves through the region Sunday and
Sunday night with the potential for rain and mountain snows.
Much cooler air will build into the region early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
High Impact Weather Potential: Dense fog expected again tonight for
the coastal plain of Maine and possibly further north and west.

1040 PM...Tweaking POPs a bit as precip still struggling to
make it thru and moisten up the very dry lyr below 10K ft. It
should work its way down overnight, at least in most spots
although QPF looks like it might be a few hundredths in some
place. Highest amts of 0.10-0.15 likely in srn NH. The fog is
working its way under the inversion near the coast and it should
thicken over the next few hours.

710 PM...Updated forecast mainly reflects a slightly later
arrival of showers, but still mid-late evening across much of
CWA, with best chance between midnight and sunrise. Dense Fog
advisory remains as is. Some question as to how dense it
actually turns out to be given he slower fall of temps and the
incoming showers, but should see at least some places especially
on the ME coast with some 1/4SM vsby.

Pattern: A deep moisture plume riding north out of the Gulf of
Mexico along the eastern seaboard is evident on early afternoon
water vapor imagery east of a mid level low that is moving into the
Great Lakes region.  Within this moisture plume...regional radar
shows a band of shower activity in association with an axis of PWATs
near 1 inch where modest low/mid level warm/moist advection is
occurring at the northern terminus of an onshore low level jet and
within a right entrance region of a 1.5 PVU jet aloft. Precipitation
rates have not been terribly heavy within the band with 6 hourly
amounts generally less than 0.25". This band will continue to march
north and east tonight and will be the primary focus of the near
term forecast period in addition to the potential for fog
redevelopment.

Through this Evening: Clouds will continue to increase and lower
through the evening with showers reaching New Hampshire between 6
and 8pm.  Mesoscale guidance suggests that fog/stratus associated
with the marine layer will make a push inland after 7pm...bringing
lowering visibilities.  As opposed to the last few evenings,
temperatures will be much slower to fall this evening remaining in
the upper 40s to middle 50s through 8pm.

Tonight: Band of showers marches east across the forecast area in
association with mid level shortwave and weak surface feature south
of New England.  As upper jet forcing /right entrance region/ lifts
northeast...overall forcing setup weakens with band of showers
becoming less organized as it heads east.  Expect many locations to
remain below 0.10"...with 0.25" the high end potential.

The other story is fog...which mesoscale guidance pushes inland from
the Gulf of Maine again this evening.  Afternoon GOES 16 visible
satellite imagery shows a rather impressive fog bank beneath
overriding cirrus over the Gulf of Maine now pushing towards
the coast. Given this...and the moister airmass in place...have
decent confidence that we/ll have another round of dense fog
tonight. In coordination with CAR have issued another dense fog
advisory for a similar area to yesterday. Could potentially see
fog make it a bit further west/north...but will have the evening
shift watch conditions evolve. With clouds and showers...lows
will again be warmer than last night...with most spots only
falling back to the 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High Impact Weather Potential: Locally dense fog possible early
Thursday morning...and again Thursday night.

Pattern: Shortwave trough axis works east with building heights
through the day Thursday as a weak surface ridge axis builds
overhead.  Clouds and temperatures will be the forecast focus
through the day before attention turns to the next shortwave lifting
north and east out of the longwave trough over the western/central
portions of the country...with the chances for precipitation being
our focus for the forecast Thursday night.

Thursday: Showers are still possible across western Maine at
daybreak but these will exit east through the morning with fog
thinning...and clouds slowly breaking during the afternoon.  This
brings our focus to afternoon temperatures as T9s in the clearing
skies increase to above +10C over southern areas with mixing through
this layer likely by late afternoon.  In these areas...inherited
highs in the upper 60s to around 70 look good and did not make
significant adjustments here as this remains in line with the higher
end of the guidance envelope. Further east...a bit of a weak damming
signature is present in the morning...with stratus/fog likely taking
much of the day to scour out...particularly along the mid coast.
Here...expect highs to be held back...in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Thursday Night:  Our respite from precipitation will be brief as the
next in a series of shortwaves in the southwest flow aloft
approaches the region.  Attendant surface low travels from near KSTL
Thursday evening to a position over southern Ontario Friday morning.
East of this feature...warm air advection will allow for top-down
saturation to continue with rain showers associated with the leading
edge of the mid level moisture surge arriving before daybreak
Friday.  Fog is again possible as dewpoints continue to rise in the
southerly flow. Lows will be warmer than the night previous yet
again...with much of southern NH remaining in the 50s with 40s
over western Maine.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overview...Little change to the extended as a very spring-like
rollercoaster forecast remains in store. Temps look to bounce
from much above normal to below then back to above thru the
middle of next week.

Impacts...Primary concern Fri will be where mid level front and
heaviest QPF sets up. If we see widespread basin averages
around 1 inch QPF then flooding becomes increasingly likely on
area rivers. At this time the threat appears low with heaviest
rainfall expected N of the border. Behind the system there is a
brief window for some gusty winds in the cold
advection...primarily over the Srn half of NH. Secondary concern
will be with late weekend storm that will be colder and bring a
threat of snow. There is growing agreement for accumulation in
the mtns and foothills...still with a non-zero chance for
accumulation into Srn and coastal zones.

Forecast Details...Rainfall will be in progress Fri morning
across the area. Overall the set up appears to be a fairly
classic SW flow event. Mid level low centers are forecast to
slide roughly ESE from near the Connecticut Lakes to Downeast.
That track is going to be hard pressed to produce much
significant QPF over the forecast area unless things start
trending Swd. Generally have amounts around a half inch N to
below a quarter inch S. See the hydro section for more
details...but widespread flooding is not anticipated. Cannot
rule out some elevated thunder with the laterally translating
band of rain early Fri...but threat is low enough that I have
not included it in the forecast.

As the cold front comes thru the second half of the day CAA will
start mixing down some of the higher winds aloft. Some gusts in
excess of 35 mph are possible as we mix out...especially across
Srn NH...with the threat increasing the further S one goes.

Attention then turns to the cyclonic wave breaking event for the
late weekend. There is growing agreement in strong secondary low
pressure wrapping up in the vicinity of coastal ME. This will
bring a myriad of hazards to the area. Maybe the highest
confidence threat will be coastal flooding. Tides will be
building up to an 11.1 ft high tide Tue afternoon...so a large
storm in the Gulf of ME would increase the flood risk Sun and
Mon. There is increasing confidence for some accumulating snow
for interior zones. Just how cold the cold shot is Fri will
determine extent of snowfall...but max T aloft forecasts from
the NBM seemed on track with a fairly broad area of interior
snow forecast for the heart of the event. Much more uncertainty
about what happens farther S across the forecast area...with dry
slotting and warm temps possibly limiting QPF altogether let
alone snowfall. Another shot of cold air will follow in the wake
of the departing storm...including gusty NW winds.

.AVIATION /03Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Short Term...

Summary: A band of rain showers will move into the region tonight
bringing deteriorating conditions in light rain...fog...and stratus.
Gradual improvement is expected on Thursday as this system departs.
Rain will return to the region before daybreak Friday with
conditions deteriorating again.

Restrictions: VFR attm.  Expect deterioration to VLIFR again this
evening for sites that saw fog this morning...with another round of
dense fog possible along with stratus/and rain showers.  Further
north and west...expect deteriorating conditions as well...with
MVFR/IFR expected.  Conditions will gradually improve Thursday
morning...with VFR likely by afternoon.  Conditions will again
deteriorate Thursday night with IFR restrictions likely as rain
arrives after midnight.

Winds: Winds will generally remain very light /5kts or less/ through
Thursday night.

LLWS: 1.5-2kft winds will increase to 25-30kts overnight with a
period of LLWS likely.  This will abate on Thursday morning as
daytime mixing commences.

Long Term...Widespread IFR or lower conditions expected early
Fri with ongoing RA. Will see a period LLWS in the morning at
all terminals as well. By afternoon some improvement in VIS/CIG
expected S of the mtns...along with surface wind gusts in
excess of 25 kt. MVFR CIGs may linger into the mtns thru
Sat...but VFR expected otherwise. Next system follows quickly
Sun...but with more uncertainty in evolution. This could bring
another period of IFR or lower conditions along with multiple
ptypes into Mon.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Dense fog will continue over the waters through
early Thursday. Otherwise...winds/waves will remain below small
craft levels through Thursday evening before strengthening winds
and increasing wave heights likely bring conditions to SCA
levels towards daybreak Friday.

Long Term...Strong SCA conditions are likely Fri...with at least
a brief window of gale force conditions outside of the bays
possible Fri afternoon and evening. SCA conditions will linger
thru the weekend.

.HYDROLOGY...
At this time I am not anticipating widespread flooding risk
across the forecast area. The bulk of the higher rain totals are
expected N of the region...and for an appreciable risk of minor
flooding we would need basin averages at or above 1 inch and
around an additional 2 inches of water from snow melt. Ensemble
guidance is somewhere between 10 and 30 percent chance of
widespread 1 inch QPF...so not quite enough to headline but
enough of a risk to pay close attention to.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Tides will be astronomically high Sunday and Monday. With a
fetch of easterly winds possible during that time, we will be on
the lookout for the potential for some minor coastal flooding.
