PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Significant amounts of ice accumulations
will make travel dangerous or impossible. Travel is strongly
discouraged. Commerce will likely be severely impacted. If you
must travel, keep a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle
in case of an emergency. Ice accumulations and winds will likely
lead to snapped power lines and falling tree branches that add to
the danger. Prepare for possible power outages.

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry high pressure will be nudged into the Northeastern United
States tonight into Thursday night as a low pressure system in
the Gulf of Mexico tracks into the Southeast. This pattern will
bring widespread precipitation to the area into Friday and wintry
weather to parts of western North Carolina later tonight and
Thursday. High pressure returns for the weekend leading to cool
and dry conditions.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 345 AM: High pressure now centered north of the Ohio River
will migrate toward the Mid-Atlantic states today, maintaining
a dry northerly flow across most of our area. Skies are clear
across most zones attm, though some bands of cirrus are seen over
the mtns associated with jet streak to our N and NW. Cirrus should
increase in coverage over the area today as this feature amplifies,
and as weak vortices spill out of the deep trough over the southern
Plains. This feature will also induce upglide over the sfc high,
which becomes increasingly moist this evening. We will maintain
a fcst free of PoPs today, but the pattern is expected to bring
a rapid decline into CAD this evening. High temps will be around
10 degrees below normal within the cool sfc airmass.

This evening, sfc cyclogenesis will begin near the western Gulf
Coast as upper trough axis begins to move east, and a warm front
will lift northward and eventually over the wedge. CAM output
depicts only very light precip during the evening evidently due
to dry air within the CAD, initially forming near the southern
Escarpment and expanding out from there with continued deepening
of the moisture. The moisture flux appears to quickly overcome the
evaporative cooling from the initial light precip, such that a very
strong warm nose develops fast enough that only a brief period
of mix appears possible across the mountains; the remainder of
the event looks to be rain/fzra dependent on sfc temp. As usual,
tricky to determine just how far temps manage to fall before
halting, but based on the models which have performed well in wedge
events recently, thinking a large part of the area previously put
into Winter Storm Watch is almost certain to dip below 32. Precip
rates are expected to be greater in the early morning hours, when
pockets of DPVA will enhance rates as the trough nears, along
with a modest amount of MUCAPE above the wedge. The combination
of the subfreezing temps and these better rates looks likely to
produce widespread 0.25" ice accum in most areas north of US 74,
so we have upgraded those zones to warning. South of the warning,
and in the lower elevations of the SW NC mtns, we have a tier of
Advisory for lesser ice accums and generally less coverage of ice
due to marginal temps in some areas.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 345 AM EST Wednesday...the short-term fcst begins at 12z on
Thursday with the broad subtropical upper ridge still in place to
our SE and very broad/deep upper trofing still anchored over the
Central CONUS. Over the next couple of days, the upper trof will
gradually move eastward and approach our area as the upper ridge
gets pushed farther east. By late Fri/early Sat, the trof axis will
be lifting up and over our area with a weaker, secondary axis still
lingering over the region as the period ends 12z Sat.

At the surface, another moist low pressure system will emerge from
the Gulf of Mexico and track up the Carolina Coast late Thursday and
into Friday. As it does, another cold air wedge will develop as the
low lifts NE and high pressure lingers well to our north over New
England. Based on the latest model profiles it's still looking like
a robust warm nose will linger over portions of the NC mtns, Foothills,
and northern Piedmont thru Thurs morning and well into the afternoon.
Based on this scenario, it's looking like we'll see warning criteria
freezing rain/ice accums over portions the above mentioned areas,
with p-type eventually transitioning to mostly rain by the mid-aftn
on Thursday. Storm-total ice accums between 0.1 and 0.5 inches will
be possible over the warned area. Snow accums should be less than an
inch across the CWFA. As for storm total QPF, we're still looking at
anywhere from 1 to about 2.5 inches across the CWFA thru the period,
with most of the 2+ amounts confined to southern and central NC mtns
and along the escarpment.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 305 AM EST Wednesday...the extended fcst picks up at 12z
on Saturday with broad upper trofing centered just to our north
as low-amplitude upper ridging spreads over the Central CONUS.
Over the next 24 hrs or so, the upper trof will lift off the
Atlantic Coast and the upper ridge will spread back over the
Southeast from the west. On Monday, another progressive upper
trof will approach the fcst area from the west and translate
over the area rather quickly. By early Tues, most of the long
range guidance has the trof moving off the East Coast with flat,
zonal flow spreading back over the region to end the period.
At the surface, broad high pressure will be spreading over the
region from the west and keep us dry through the weekend. The
high will eventually slide off the Atlantic Coast on Monday,
as another clipper-type low spins up over the Southern Plains
and quickly lifts NE towards the Ohio River Valley. This system
will bring another cold front to our doorstep on Monday with
the front expected to be east of the fcst area by late Monday.
High pressure spreads back over the area in its wake and should
keep us dry into mid-week.

.AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: VFR today with cirrus gradually returning
to the area ahead of approaching shortwave. Winds are starting
off light northerly where not calm; as sfc high over the Midwest
shifts toward the East Coast, these winds will veer. Most likely
they will remain in the NE quadrant thru the period, except going
SE at KAVL by midday. KCLT will see a near-crosswind for a time in
the afternoon. The high will set the stage for another CAD event
tonight, as moist upglide develops over it in conjunction with the
shortwave. A rapid crash in cigs is expected following the onset of
precip, which could happen prior to 06z at any site. The crash is
more likely after that time, so all mention prior to 06z is VCSH
or PROB30. KCLT expected to be IFR before the start of ops Thu
morning. Temps will be near freezing at onset and a brief period
of -SN may develop during the late evening; most of the precip in
these colder areas will trend toward PL as the warm layer deepens
above the CAD wedge, and subsequently to FZRA where temps are below
freezing. KAVL is the only site where this is currently mentioned,
but it is likely to occur at KHKY for a time Thu morning, after
this period. Can't yet totally rule it out at KCLT but now it
appears like they will stay all rain.

Outlook: FZRA/PL will trend back to rain during the day Thu. The
restrictions that develop early Thu morning likely will linger
until Friday morning in most areas. Any lingering precipitation
may change to snow again in the mountains Thu night. Dry and most
likely VFR over the weekend.
