Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A moist cold front will bring precipitation to the area, mainly this
morning. As colder air spills in behind the front on northwest
winds, snow showers are expected to develop across the mountains
tonight into Monday before ending Tuesday. A gradual warming trend
is expected to begin during mid-week before another cold front
approaches from the west by the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 350 AM EST: A stacked low over the Ohio Valley continued to
drift east early this morning. An occluded front oriented parallel
to the Appalachians and flow aloft continued to slide east through
the area, ramping up precipitation across the region from west to
east. An insitu-wedge has responded to the moistening low levels,
perhaps assisted dropping pressure across the Upper Savannah River
Valley. The resultant light northeast winds east of the mountains
have helped to maintain near freezing temperatures north of I-85 and
especially from I-40 and points north. We've already seen a combo of
mPing and ASOS reports of snow/sleet mainly across the mountains
into the NC foothills.

The back edge of precipitation associated with the occluded front is
expected to shift from west to east through the area from late this
morning into the afternoon. Most areas will rise above freezing
between mid-morning and noon. As a result the snow/sleet/freezing
rain threat will rapidly diminish during this time frame. Went
slightly above NBM for temperatures following the latest trends and
used the GFS depiction of the rather muted warm nose for this
forecast iteration. Overall, no significant changes expected for
winter products through for today. One notable exception may be the
addition of Rabun and portions of Macon county to the Winter Weather
Advisory as temperatures remain at or just above freezing there with
ongoing precipitation. Still anticipating snow totals of 1 to 3
inches (locally 5) in the warning with a tenth or two of ice
possible. Up to two inches of snow and/or up to a tenth or two of
ice is expected in advisory areas. Wedge-like temperatures will
persist under cloudy skies today even after most of the
precipitation has ended with widespread highs in the upper 30s to
40s.

Cyclogenesis across eastern NC this evening into tonight will assist
in driving the upper low from the Ohio Valley towards our generally
direction. Falling heights/thicknesses with added upper support will
produce elevation dependent rain/snow showers across the mountains
with isolated rain showers to the east. Light snow accumulations are
likely by Monday morning above 3500 feet in and around the Smokies.
Low temperatures will settle into the 30s for most.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 320 am Sunday: Synoptically-enhanced NW flow precip event will
be ongoing at the start of the short term, as the center of an upper
low wobbles across, or very close to the CWA. Although the magnitude
of the low level upslope component will be unimpressive, at least
until the upper trough axis shifts east of the area later in the
day, upper level support and impressive moisture profiles...more or
less saturated up to 700 mb/about -20 C, esp across the southern NC
mtns should make up for it. As such, there could be some impressive
snowfall rates across the high elevations of the Smokies and
surrounding ranges from late morning or so into the afternoon. The
bulk of snow is expected to fall during this time, although snow
showers will continue Mon night into Tuesday, as a more pure upslope
event unfolds. By the time the snow showers taper off Tuesday
morning, locations above about 4000' in the high elevations along
the TN border, primarily from around 1-26 southwest, will likely
have a solid 6-10", with locally higher amounts. Meanwhile, the
typical shadowing effects will limit the population centers beneath
the Smokies to maybe a couple of inches at best, while the lower
elevations of Madison County...less prone to significant shadowing
in NW flow...could see amounts as high as 5 inches. All that
considered, a Winter Storm Watch will be issued for all of Madison
County, and above 3500' in Haywood/Swain/Graham counties.

Otherwise, scattered showers will likely break containment into
areas away from the TN border from Sunday morning into afternoon,
including in the Piedmont and foothills. This will likely result in
random/non-traditional NW flow locations in the mountains picking up
a quick inch or so at times. Temps should be such to support
primarily rain outside the mtns, but snow and/or graupel could mix
in at times of heavier precip rates, especially along the I-40
corridor. Temps will be below climo through the period.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 335 am Sunday: The medium range will be characterized by
rising heights along the East Coast, as a major longwave trough
gradually shapes up across the middle of the country. Attendant
sensible weather highlights will feature temps warming to around
normal by Wed, then around 5 degrees above climo by the end of the
week. Global model guidance generally agree in lifting a speed max
lifting across the TN and OH Valleys over the weekend, with
attendant wet-looking frontal zone bringing us out next chance for
precipitation beginning in the Fri/Fri night time frame. Guidance
then diverges widely regarding just how progressive this system will
be, with the (as usual) more progressive GFS signaling that precip
will be a fading memory by the end of the period, and the ECMWF
featuring a more of a stalling front/protracted potentially heavy
rain event that carried past the end of this forecast cycle. Nodding
to the inherent uncertainty this far out, we feature chance pops
from early Friday through the day Saturday.

.AVIATION /09Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: A marked downward trend in cigs/vsbys is
expected through 12Z with little or no improvement expected during
the day. The system has trended marginally warmer which will
decrease spatial and temporal coverage of wintry weather with KAVL
and KHKY taking the brunt of mainly FZRAPL with onset SN. Even there
temperatures should warm above freezing, transition to shra between
12Z and 15Z. The upper low pushing into the region tonight will
bring another round of elevation dependent -rasn focused across the
mountains and foothills and mainly after 00Z. Have left precip
mention for now during this timeframe until there is better
agreement among guidance.

Outlook: A period of NW flow snow is likely over the mountains on
Monday into Monday night before the rest of the area dries out. A
few -rasn may develop east of the mountains at times. Low cigs may
continue outside of the mountains before drying develops.
