Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A nearly stationary front stretching from the central Gulf of
Mexico across central Florida to the western Atlantic will drift
further southeast away from our region.  A strong cold front crosses
the area Wednesday, with much below normal temperatures across the
region for a couple of days. A more significant low pressure may
cross our region Saturday and Saturday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 130 AM: Increasing cirrus across the area may slow cooling but
left low temps as is for now.

Otherwise, weak sfc high will drift over the area in the wake of
the departed shortwave and its associated coastal low. Somewhat
perturbed flow will continue aloft, with some vort maxes passing
across the Deep South ahead of the next wave near the Gulf
Coast. This looks to bring a few high level clouds across mainly
our southern zones, but otherwise it looks like decent radiational
cooling will occur. Morning mins will be a little below normal,
but too warm for frost except perhaps on high mountain ridges.

High pressure will set up off the East Coast by midday Tuesday,
putting us back into a return flow regime ahead of a synoptic-scale
trough and embedded shortwave over the mid-Mississippi Valley. This
will lead to rebounding temperatures (maxes generally 0-2 degrees
above normal) and enough moisture flux to keep dewpoints from
mixing out substantially. Nonetheless, a capping warm layer in
the midlevels looks to inhibit any deep convection, so we again
will forecast PoPs below slight-chance.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 2 PM Monday: the short-term forecast picks up at 00z on
Wednesday with broad upper trofing digging down over the Great
Lakes and Northern MS River Valley. The trof axis is expected to
pass just to our north late Wed into early Thursday as the base
of the trof flattens considerably and lingers to our north for
the rest of the period. At the sfc, a cold front associated with
the upper shortwave moves into the area. Moisture will be limited
despite the decent upper forcing, so precip chances will be higher
across the northern tier of the CWA where the moisture and forcing
better align. Any QPF amounts should be minimal. Highs will be
just below normal on Wednesday as the cold front crosses the area.
Frost/freeze conditions will be likely for for a good portion of
the CWA early Thursday, especially over the NC mountains as a
broad Canadian high and strong CAA builds in after the Wednesday
fropa. A sharp gradient aloft and a tight pressure gradient at
the sfc will produce very breezy conditions spreading from west
to east over the course of the day Wednesday. Winds will begin
to subside after sunset as the center of high pressure spreads
across the SE Wednesday night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 145 PM Monday: the extended fcst picks up at 00z on Friday
with broad upper trofing moving off the Atlantic Coast as heights
begin to recover over our area. On Saturday, a weaker southern-
stream upper trof/shortwave will approach the Southeast from the
west and move over the area early Sunday. In its wake, flat upper
ridging will spread back over the area to end the period.

At the surface, broad high pressure will be centered over the SE
to start the period. By early Sat, the high will drift offshore
as a robust low develops over northern Texas. The low is expected
to quickly translate eastward and approach our area later in the
day. As it does, a very broad area of deeper moisture will spread
over the region from the SW and bring widespread precip to the CWA.
The latest guidance has the low itself lifting up and over the fcst
area sometime late Saturday into early Sunday. In its wake, broad
Canadian high pressure will spread over the region on Sunday and
linger thru early next week. As for the sensible fcst, frost/freeze
conditions will be possible again early Friday across a good portion
of the CWA, especially over the NC mountains as widespread 30s are
expected with a few locations dropping into the 20s. On Sat, the
above-mentioned low pressure system could produce some form of hydro
threat, although the area of best QPF response and timing is still
somewhat uncertain. The overall consensus still has most of the
precip spreading from west to east on Sat and becoming widespread
thru Saturday night before tapering off Sun morning.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: VFR. Light winds this morning with increasing
cirrus. Expect FEW-SCT cumulus this aftn, generally with bases 050-
070. Cumulus continues overnight with mid level cigs. Winds will
increase in speed from the south during the morning as high pressure
slides east. Can't rule out some low end gusts for the afternoon.
Winds diminish a little in speed but remain southerly overnight.

Outlook: A cold front will cross the region from the west on
Wednesday, but have limited moisture, keeping most of the shower and
lower clouds along the TN border. The bigger concern will be gusty
west to northwest winds during the day. Dry high pressure returns
for Thursday and Friday. A low pressure system will bring
precipitation and possible restrictions Saturday.
