Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An unseasonably cold air mass will build into the area behind a
departing cold front today, and settle over the region for the rest
of the week. Expect an upper level ridge to build over the region
from Sunday into next week, continuing dry, but warmer weather. The
next rain maker will approach our region in the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 310 AM: There might be a few lingering sprinkles underneath
the last of the low clouds over the wrn Piedmont, but the
back edge of the low cloudiness should continue to make steady
eastward progress through the pre-dawn hours based on satellite
trends. Expect the clouds to clear the eastern zones well before
daybreak. Meanwhile, very little radar returns were noted over the
WNW flow upslope areas, but satellite imagery showed a few low
clouds drifting down from eastern KY, so a small chance of snow
showers was kept for the time being. The Wind Advisory appears to
be working out, with frequent gusts continuing across the mtns and
adjacent foothill/mtn zones. Otherwise, temp/dewpt trends will be
updated based on observations.

Cool Canadian high pressure will be the dominant weather feature
across the region for at least the next 24 hours. In spite
of the high pressure, we will still have some ongoing weather
concerns. Continued cold advection and pressure gradient across
the mtns should allow for deep enough mixing to tap into the
stronger N flow aloft through the daylight hours, so the Wind
Advisory will be maintained intact. The low level flow looks more
dry than previous guidance would indicate, meaning we have less
of a chance of generating as much upslope light snow showers on
the TN border today. Already low precip probs were dropped a bit
farther, so it is now looking like any snow accum would be isolated
at best. We might actually see a slight uptick this evening if the
NAM is correct, but even then it will be minimal. The main story
will continue to be the cool temps, more representative of early
February than early April. For tonight, in spite of a few tweaks,
the low temps are all below freezing across the entire fcst area,
so the Watch will be converted to a Freeze Warning with high
confidence. We might threaten some record min temps, but right
now it looks like the wind will prevent the radiational cooling
that we would need to make it down to record territory.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Thursday: A deep, sharp upper trough will push off the
Mid-Atlantic Coast Friday, as an upper ridge begins to build over
the Plains to the Midwest. At the sfc, Canadian high pressure will
dominate over the eastern CONUS, with the center roughly over the
Ohio Valley during the day. There will be enough pres grad over
the FA to keep conditions breezy, and combined with decent mixing
of very low dewpts, aftn RH will bottom out in the teens to low
20s across the area. This may result in elevated fire wx concerns,
especially if fuels dry out a lot today. Otherwise, Friday should
be sunny with highs about 15-20 deg below normal.

The center of the sfc high will settle right over the FA Friday
night, resulting in nearly ideal radiational cooling conditions
with light wind and clear skies. Confidence is high that temps
will fall into the 20s to lower 30s (similar lows to tonight). But
will hold off on issuing a Freeze Watch, since we are upgrading
a Freeze Watch to Freeze Warning for tonight.

The high will remain over the area Saturday, resulting in light
winds and sunny skies. Temps should rebound a couple categories
from Friday's highs, still 5-10 deg below normal. Min temps Saturday
night should also be not as cold, but we could have areas of frost
with lows in the 30s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 130 AM Thursday: A large dry area of high pressure will remain
centered over the southeastern CONUS Sunday, then become shunted
south over the Gulf of Mexico early next week. The upper level
flow should remain out of the NW, with an upper ridge persisting
over the central CONUS. So temps are expected to gradually warm
late this weekend into the middle of next week due to westerly
to northwesterly 850 mb flow atop the forecast area. High temps
should be near normal Sunday, warming to 8 to 10 degrees above
normal early next week. RH vales in the 30s are expected late this
weekend into early next week. Despite high pressure leading to light
winds during this time of low RH, fire weather could be a concern.

The next rain chances look to be perhaps Wednesday (per the 12z
ECMWF), or Thursday (per the 00z GFS), as a backdoor cold front
slides in and stalls out. Confidence is still low, given the model

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: The last of the MVFR ceiling restrictions
should move east of KCLT in short order, so the TAF begins VFR,
but with a lingering bkn low cloud ceiling around 045. Satellite
imagery shows the back edge of the low cloud deck moving steadily
east, so it too should be long gone by daybreak. The only other
problems might be at KAVL where some low clouds may linger for
the next few hours in the valley. Otherwise, the strong N/NW
winds will be the main concern, with frequent gusts through at
least sunset at all terminals. We might see another VFR low cloud
ceiling moving down from the N and clipping KCLT this afternoon,
but the cloud base is expected to remain above 050. After sunset,
expect clear sky and wind gusts to diminish.
