.A quick-moving low pressure system and upper-level disturbance
will approach and pass through the area late this evening through
Sunday, leading to widespread light to moderate snow across
central and east-central Wisconsin. South to southeast winds may
also lead to some lake enhancement for the shoreline counties late
Sunday morning. Most locations will see 2 to 5 inches of snow by
the time the snow tapers off from west to east Sunday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Saturday
Issued at 341 AM CST Fri Jan 22 2021

Main highlights from this forecast period revolve around the
presence of colder air and quieter conditions for Friday and
Friday night before the next chance of precipitation arrives late
Saturday.

Early this morning, satellite imagery showed a large area of lake-
enhanced clouds over the forecast area. In addition to the clouds,
regional and local radar showed light lake-enhanced snow bands
moving across the region from the northwest. While light lake-effect
snow continued in far north-central Wisconsin, the lake-enhanced
clouds and northwest winds carried flurries across the rest of the
forecast area early this morning.

Friday and Friday night...A surface high pressure system will slowly
creep into the forecast area today. Ahead of the high, breezy
northwest winds will keep the light lake-effect snow showers in far
north-central Wisconsin through early this afternoon. The northwest
winds will also keep the lake-enhanced clouds across far northern
Wisconsin for much of the day. A different story for central and
east-central Wisconsin where skies will become mostly sunny by this
afternoon as a result of the high moving over the region. In
addition to the clearing skies, the breezy northwest winds will
gradually decrease by this afternoon and turn west. Below normal
high temperatures are expected today with readings in the teens.
Later tonight, the high pressure will allow for clearing skies and
light winds. While this combination is prime for tanking low
temperatures in central and north-central Wisconsin, there is some
guidance indicating skies not completely clearing in far north-
central Wisconsin. Did lower temperatures keeping most locations in
the single digits below zero with the exception along the lakeshore
where readings in the single digits above zero are more likely.

Saturday...A cold, but mostly clear, morning is expected for
Saturday before the high pressure slides out of the region in the
afternoon. Behind the high, increasing WAA will allow clouds to
spread across the forecast area. This WAA is in association with the
next system expected to bring accumulating snow to the forecast
area. Chances for snow will begin to increase in central Wisconsin

expected for Saturday with readings in the lower 20s.

.LONG TERM...Saturday Night Through Thursday

Main forecast focus continues to be on snow event that will impact
the region from Saturday evening through roughly mid-day Sunday.
Temperatures to remain above normal for much of next week as true
arctic air is still locked well north in Canada.

Attention remains focused on incoming snow event that will begin
to impact northeast WI Saturday night. The lingering questions
continue to be when the snow will arrive, how much snow will fall
and when will the snow depart. The first question has become a bit
more uncertain as most of the models have slowed the start time of
snow to late evening central WI and after midnight eastern WI. The
cold front is expected to just approach the MN/WI border by 12Z
Sunday, while the accompanying mid-level shortwave trough to still
be over the Upper MS Valley. May slow the snow onset pops a bit
for the evening, however with an increase in lift (cold front/left
exit region of upper jet), Q-G forcing at mid-levels (shortwave
trough) and low-level moisture, anticipate widespread snow over
northeast WI after midnight. As for the second question to how
much snow will fall Saturday night, it still looks like a broad 2
to 4 inches with the higher values over central WI and lower
values near the MI border. Min temperatures to be from 10 to 15
above north, middle teens to around 20 degrees south.

The snow will continue into Sunday morning as the cold front/
shortwave trough push across WI. The models do quickly end the
snow once the cold front moves by, thus central WI should see the
precipitation cease by roughly mid-morning and eastern WI by early
afternoon. Additional accumulations would range from a dusting
over central WI, to 1 to 2 inches near Lake MI. Total
accumulations when all is said and done is expected to be 1 to 3
inches near the MI border, 2 to 4 inches elsewhere. High pressure
is forecast to begin building into WI later on Sunday with some
partial clearing skies reaching central WI. Max temperatures to
range from the lower 20s north-central WI, to around 30 degrees
east-central WI.

This high pressure will send drier air into WI for Sunday night on
north-northeast winds. Trajectories are not favorable for lake
effect over north-central WI and temperatures are not cold enough
for lake effect off of Lake MI. Therefore, have gone with mainly
partly cloudy skies with min temperatures to range from 5 to 10
above north-central, 15 to 20 degrees near Lake MI. The sprawling
area of high pressure over southern Canada will also prevent
another system from moving into the Great Lakes region on Monday.
Central and east-central WI should see more clouds from this
system and an increasing northeast wind is anticipated. We will
have to watch for lake effect from Lake MI, as well as rises in
bay levels as these winds funnel down the bay. Max temperatures
on Monday to again range from the lower 20s north-central, to
near 30 degrees east- central WI.

Lake effect snow showers/flurries still possible going into Monday
night, but winds will not be as strong as the surface low tracks
into western PA. Otherwise, partly to mostly cloudy skies can be
expected Monday night into Tuesday with the region sitting on the
southern flank of high pressure still over southern Canada. Max
temperatures for Tuesday to range from the upper teens north-
central, to the middle 20s east-central WI.

Clouds are expected to increase Wednesday night ahead of the next
mid-level shortwave trough moving into the Plains. The ECMWF has
not shifted gears and agrees with the GFS and CMC in taking this
trough more on a southeast track into the central Plains/Mid-MS
Valley on Wednesday. This track would keep any precipitation to
our south, thus have maintained the dry forecast. Max temperatures
to be in the middle 20s to around 30 degrees.

Have kept the dry conditions going through Thursday as another
area of high pressure builds across the Great Lakes. Temperatures
will continue to run above normal with readings on Thursday again
in the middle 20s to around 30 degrees.

.AVIATION...for 18Z TAF Issuance
Issued at 1149 AM CST Fri Jan 22 2021

Low level clouds hung on across far northern and eastern Wisconsin
this morning, but clearing will continue to spread from central to
eastern Wisconsin this afternoon. As the low cloud depart, mid
level clouds will arrive for portions of central Wisconsin, but
these are not expected to impact flying conditions. Good VFR
flying conditions are then expected for the remainder of the
period as winds shift towards the west. There is a chance that
some low level clouds return overnight to the far north off of
Lake Superior, which would mainly impact RHI, but currently favor
higher CIGs with this issuance.

Northwest winds will diminish early in the TAF period, coming down
to around 5 kts by the overnight hours before shifting to the west
overnight.
