.SHORT TERM...Today...Tonight...and Tuesday
Issued at 341 AM CDT Mon May 31 2021

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible this
morning across northcentral Wisconsin along a weak warm front
around 850 mb. More significant convection is expected during the
afternoon and early evening hours as a vigorous upper trough and
weak cold front move across the forecast area.

Shear is only around 25 knots, and there is not much temperature
differential along the front. Cloud cover will also hinder surface
heating. There is however decent instability with forecast CAPE
values of 500 to 1200 J/kg depending on location and model. In
addition, low wet bulb zero heights of 5000 to 7000 ft are low
for this time of the year, which would be favorable for large hail
if there are storms with strong updrafts. The Storm Prediction
Center severe weather outlook of a marginal chance of severe
weather looks good given the rationale above. High temperatures
will be pretty close to normal.

Showers and thunderstorms should exit eastern Wisconsin by middle
or late evening, with clearing behind the front. Lows will be
near or a little cooler then normal. Weak high pressure moves
across Wisconsin Tuesday, with a slight chance of showers in the
afternoon along a lake breeze. Highs will be a little above
normal.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday Night Through Sunday

A warming trend is expected into the weekend as 500mb heights
continue to rise and 850mb temperatures warm to +17C to +19C
next weekend (ECMWF).

A 500mb trough swings across the western Great Lakes region on
Wednesday. Main upper level energy passes to the south of the state,
thus any convection will be associated with the heating of the
day. Will continue the small chances of showers and storms during
the afternoon. For Thursday, current forecast has had a small
chance of showers and storms during the afternoon over the last
few days. Really no upper level feature to focus on. Any
convection will be diurnally driven thus kept the small chances of
showers and storms.

The heat builds Friday and over next weekend as the ECMWF
indicated 850mb temps would support highs in the 80s to around 90
into into early next week.

.AVIATION...for 18Z TAF Issuance
Issued at 1243 PM CDT Mon May 31 2021

Look for isolated to scattered shower and storms to push across
the area this afternoon and early evening as an upper level trough
and weak cold front swing across the region, ending northwest to
southeast by around 03z. The strongest storms could produce hail
and surface wind gusts over 40 knots. Outside of the convection,
VFR conditions are expected into the evening.

Skies will at least partially clear out behind the trough/front,
with some ground fog expected to develop in the late evening and
overnight hours. Decided to go with some prevailing groups for
IFR/MVFR VSBYs, but some LIFR/VLIFR maybe be needed in the 08-12z
timeframe. The fog will burn off early Tuesday morning. Then,
good flying weather are expected the rest of Tuesday with only
some late morning and afternoon cumulus clouds. A stray shower
cannot be ruled out over central or eastern WI in the afternoon
along a lake breeze and remnant outflow boundary but VFR
conditions are expected to prevail. Winds will be southwest
today, with a few gusts of 10-20 kts, then winds become light and
variable tonight into Tuesday morning.

AFTERNOON...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms have developed over northern
Wisconsin early this afternoon in conjunction with an upper-level
disturbance and cold front. Expect these showers and storms to
persist through the afternoon with a few of these storms becoming
strong with small hail and gusty winds possible.

...STRONG THUNDERSTORM OVER NORTH-CENTRAL WISCONSIN...

At 137 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over
Lac Du Flambeau, or 14 miles southeast of Turtle Flambeau Flowage,
moving east at 25 mph.

Pea size hail and winds in excess of 30 mph will be possible with
this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Lac Du Flambeau, Squirrel Lake, Minocqua, Arbor Vitae, Woodruff,
Hazelhurst, Lake Tomahawk and Sayner.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Persons in campgrounds should consider seeking sturdy shelter until
this storm passes.

...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS MOVING OVER SOUTHERN VILAS AND NORTHERN
ONEIDA COUNTIES UNTIL 315 PM CDT...

At 209 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms over
north-central Wisconsin. The strongest storm was located 7 miles
northwest of Rainbow Flowage, or 19 miles west of Eagle River,
moving east at 25 mph.

Penny size hail and winds in excess of 30 mph will be possible with
this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Eagle River, Lac Du Flambeau, Squirrel Lake, Rainbow Flowage,
Minocqua, Arbor Vitae, Three Lakes, Woodruff, Sugar Camp and Lake
Tomahawk.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Persons in campgrounds should consider seeking sturdy shelter until
this storm passes.
