Dense fog along the CO river in the Grand Valley has receded to
areas between Grand Junction and Mack, so cancelled the advisory
for the Gunnison River Valley and east of Grand Junction. The
advisory has been extended until 11 am for points west of Grand
Junction along the river. The inversion is very shallow, around
200-300 ft, so it should break by late morning and mix the fog
out. Elsewhere, snow showers have greatly diminished over the
mountains, with the exception of some light upslope across the
central and northern mountains of CO. These will not amount to
much today, so will be letting the current winter storm warnings
and winter weather advisories go on schedule at 11 am.

light, winds remained strong enough to warrant keeping winter
highlights going across the mountains of the Continental Divide
through 11 AM. Meanwhile, the saturated near surface layer in the
west-central Colorado valleys brought widespread fog which had
become dense in some areas. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect
for the Grand and Uncompahgre River valleys and the central I-70
corridor through Glenwood Springs until 9 AM.
Flow aloft shifts to the southwest as the trough along the West
Coast deepens. Continued drying will bring an end to snow showers
for all but a handful of mountain locations during the afternoon.
However, the lull will be short lived as an energetic shortwave
moves over the western Great Basin late tonight. Mid and upper
level lift will begin to generate widespread snow over the
mountains late tonight with scattered showers over the valleys by
early Sunday morning. Snow becomes widespread over much of the
region as the shortwave passes overhead during the day, though the
lower valleys are likely to see a mix of rain and snow. Meanwhile,
winds increase significantly as a 160+ knot jet moves overhead and
ridge level wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph become possible. Early
indications call for snowfall amounts ranging from 6 to 12 inches,
mainly above 8500 feet, with locally higher amounts up to 2 feet
with significant blowing and drifting snow which will continue
into Sunday night. Therefore, a Winter Weather Watch has been
issued from 09Z tonight to 12Z Monday morning.
Temperatures, by and large, will continue to run above normal for
most locations. However, inversions in the lower valleys may defy
guidance resulting in readings at, or a little below normal.

A broad trough over the western US will dominate our weather
pattern into the last week of the year. In the wake of the first
of a series of mid-level troughs to impact the area, conditions
will begin to improve late Sunday night. However, the lull will
be short- lived as the next wave moves across the Great Basin on
Monday with southwest winds increasing over the higher terrain
ahead of this wave. Snow will increase across the forecast area on
Monday bringing another round of mountain snow and valley snow
showers which will continue with some lulls before diminishing on
Wednesday. Ensemble solutions diverge by midweek with consensus
solutions showing the large trough over the Pacific Northwest
dropping south off of the California coast by the end of the work
week bringing a more organized storm over the forecast area by
Friday. Temperatures will remain seasonably cold as we head into
the New Year.

Strengthening winds aloft associated with an overhead jetstream
are expected at TAF sites later today and will create some LLWS.
Clouds will be on the increase today as the next pulse of energy
impacts the region with snow showers at mountain sites and showers
in lower valleys tonight. Surface winds are expected to gust
generously at all sites with the passage of this wave. Expect
visibilities to be impacted with blowing snow as well.
