Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Junction CO 1020 PM MST Tue Dec 21 2021 .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Wednesday night) Issued at 157 PM MST Tue Dec 21 2021 Satellite WV loops currently display a dirty ridge rolling over the Four Corners and a broad trough swooping through the Northern Plains. This pattern leaves the West Slope sandwiched between the two systems, draped under a swath of northwesterly winds. Over time, this sinusoidal wave will shift eastward, allowing the ridge axis to nudge overhead. As a result, expect an uptick in mid to high- level clouds spilling across the CWA this evening and overnight. A thin layer of cloud cover may insulate a few localized areas, though in general, expect fairly consistent overnight lows to previous readings. Before the ridge axis can settle directly atop the UT/CO border, a rotating low off the eastern Pacific will send a pulse of energy inland, traversing the Northern Rockies as it becomes absorbed in Westerly flow. This little perturbation will be sufficient enough to deamplify the ridge aloft on Wednesday, and slowly shift 500mb winds to more zonal flow. Temperatures Wednesday afternoon will dip 3 to 8 degrees across northern UT and CO, in response to the squashed ridging. However, areas generally along and south of I-70 will see very little change to the high temperature forecast. One caveat that could throw off my current forecast, may be an uptick in mid to high level clouds following along the jet stream positioned overhead. The end result would be slightly cooler temperatures than anticipated. Guidance shifts mid level flow from the southwest overnight, while the next approaching system dives southward, along the Pacifc coast. This will be the last dry period as the weather pattern begins to shift toward wintery conditions, as discussed below. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 157 PM MST Tue Dec 21 2021 A long duration atmospheric river event will take hold of the western United States from Thursday onwards as a series of systems and an abundance of moisture progress onshore. Upper level flow will shift to the southwest across eastern Utah and western Colorado ahead of the first system as a broad Pacific trough elongates off the west coast. This will see temperatures climb to 4 to 8 degrees above normal Thursday afternoon. In response, snow levels will be on the rise, which makes for a tricky forecast as precipitation begins to develop across the region as early as mid to late Thursday. The aforementioned trough will push inland and settle over western California Thursday night before quickly trekking east across the Great Basin on Friday. Precipitable water is expected to almost double across much of the area during this period and sit at 200 to 300% of the climatological normal for late December by Friday evening. Late Friday and early Saturday will see the now embedded shortwave axis pass over the Divide, ushering in a weak cold front. Precipitation looks to taper off slightly on Saturday afternoon as the next upper level trough quickly moves inland across the western CONUS Saturday evening. The good news about this secondary system is the colder airmass with 700mb temperatures dropping to -14 to -18 degrees C during its initial push onshore. Showers will increase in earnest across the Western Slope on Sunday as the trough approaches with its passage looking to occur Sunday afternoon/evening. Lower heights will continue to dominate the western states as we head into the last week of 2021 with yet another trough digging into the Northern Rockies during the Monday/Tuesday timeframe. Its arrival will continue to reinforce the cold air established earlier in the period with 700mb temperatures on track to reach the low to mid negative teens across the forecast area. Now that the general groundwork has been laid for this prolonged period of cool and unsettled weather, it's time to talk specifics, namely confidence and where uncertainty remains. As far as moisture is concerned, confidence is very high that an abundance of mositure will be available with the aforementioned PWATs still expected to near the 99th percentile for the region. Confidence is also somewhat high with the systems themselves, specifically having one move through on Friday, another late this weekend, with a final disturbance rounding out the long term period. With this many features in play, one of the biggest challenges going forward will be nailing down when the greatest impacts are expected. Because, with this pattern, it's highly possible that some of the higher elevations will not see much, if any, break in snowfall from Thursday evening onwards. As a result, highlight duration will be difficult, especially with the upcoming holiday travel where people will be looking for some gaps in order to drive east, west, or wherever they choose to go! High-end advisories look favorable for the first wave for the western Colorado mountains, but things could change as we're still a few days out. Jet dynamics late Friday will result in more efficient snow rates for the higher elevations, in addition to the favorable orographics in the southwest and then west-facing slopes with this first system. As noted previously, the warm antecedent conditions as a result of the southwesterly flow late Thursday and Friday will make for a difficult snow level forecast as this first system begins to impact the region, particularly for the southern and central valleys. The frontal passage late Friday will see light snow accumulate in some of the valleys, though the Grand Valley and areas in east-central and southeast Utah look to hover too close to freezing for more than a rain/snow mix at this time. As we head into the late weekend and early next week systems, more significant snow will be possible for many higher elevations, but amounts are highly subject to change this far out. The overarching message for the long term period is to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, particularly in the mountains, as a series of systems impact the region. If travelling for the holidays, snow, blowing snow and icy conditions could make for treacherous travel over mountain passes beginning late Thursday and potentially continuing through the weekend.
