.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)

It has been a mostly clear and calm night across the Western
Slope, aside from a few pockets of stratus bubbling over higher
valleys and northern ranges. Though, based on the current status
of low stratus, expect cloud cover to dissipate by sunrise as the
extent is eroding quickly along the Park and Gore Ranges. Clearing
and dry conditions have allowed for cooler temperatures tonight,
with areas dropping below freezing over susceptible valleys. Have
left current freeze highlights untouched this morning as
temperatures will continue to lower until dawn.

The transient ridge has already shifted east of the Divide,
transitioning upper level winds from the southwest. As the morning
progresses, the anomalously low Pacific trough will dive into the
Great Basin and tighten pressure gradients aloft. Clear skies and
a dried lower atmosphere forecast today will be optimal for deep
boundary layer mixing. So, expect winds to ramp up by noon and
persist (especially across exposed ridgetops) as this system
evolves throughout the short term. High temperatures will nudge
up a few degrees today, in response to deep mixing and WAA under
the strong southerly winds aloft.

Chance for precip will start increasing this evening, favoring the
Eastern Uintas initially. The mid level low is forecast to lift
northeast, from the south-central Nevada into southeast Utah
overnight. In conjunction, a strong frontal boundary will
progress into eastern Utah early Tuesday morning and continue its
eastward progression into Western Colorado by sunrise. Expect the
San Juans, Abajos and La Sals to see their heaviest snowfall rates
with the frontal passage beginning overnight and extending into
Tuesday morning. Latest guidance has revealed a potent dry slot
quickly moving in on the heels of the front and its band of
precipitation. Have a mild concern that dry air working its way
north may truncate QPF estimates across lower valleys and
downsloping aspects. Though, any convective activity may override
my concerns and bring ample rain to said valleys/slopes...

Better certainty lies within the trajectory of this system,
lifting directly over the forecast area and bringing anomalously
cold temperatures area wide. Despite low confidence in valley QPF
totals...widespread precipitation and mountain accumulating snow
will spread northward through out the day. As a result, I have
staggered Winter Weather Advisories to account for the storms
northeasterly progression and the slightly delayed onset of snow
for the central and northern ranges, respectively. The low will
lift into southeast Wyoming Tuesday evening, allowing wrap around
moisture to enhance snow fall over the Elkhead, Gore, Park, and
Flat Tops.

In general, mountain zones will see 4 to 8 inches of snow with
higher amounts nearing a foot over the San Juans, while high
valleys and areas above 6,000 feet can expect a trace to a few
tenths of snow. Convective showers may drive that snow line down a
touch, however, no snow is anticipated across the Grand Valley,
nor the Grand Flats.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

By early Wednesday, the midlevel low pressure will be lifting out
over the Northern Plains allowing subsidence to spread across the
area. Around this time the snow will be diminishing in the southern
mountains and by mid morning in the central mountains. By late
morning, the flow becomes westerly and lingering mositure in
northwest Colorado will result in orographic precipitation for the
northern mountains. Some of this orographic snow in the morning
could reach further south towards the I-70 corridor near Vail Pass
with improving conditions in the afternoon. Dry air will gradually
filter into the area so most of the showers come to an end by the
afternoon. A majority of the accumulating snow will occur during the
predawn hours, which may cause a tricky commute. This is the
timeframe though that the northern mountains will see the higher
rates, which is why the highlights were extended there. There will
be a short break before the next shortwave drops down the back side
of the main trough. The models are struggling with the strength of
this system as it passes overhead. Regardless, it looks to bring
another round of precipitation to portions of the forecast area.
Most of this will occur during the day Thursday favoring west to
northwest facing slopes of the higher terrain. On Friday, the trough
exits the region allowing a ridge to build so conditions appear to
be dry for the weekend.

These incoming systems will be bringing the coldest air we have
experienced this season. Sub-freezing temperatures will be fairly
widespread by Wednesday morning with lows at least in the 20s above
6000 feet. These lows are possible again on Thursday morning. The
trough that passes overhead on Thursday re-enforces the cold air. In
fact, it is colder. The lows on Friday and Saturday morning are
forecasted to dip into the teens and 20s down to 6000 feet, with
most locations seeing sub-freezing temps especially Saturday
morning. With all that being said any overnight cloud cover could
complicate the low temperature forecast during this period. It may
be time to consider winterizing if you have not done so yet. Highs
will be 10 to 20 degrees below average, but gradually warm up closer
to normal by early next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)

A potent system approaching from the northwest will bring
increasing winds aloft as the day progresses. Expect gusty
southwest winds this afternoon with gusts reaching 25 to 30 kts as
well as increasing cloud cover spreading from west to east. VFR
conditions will persist through this afternoon, though,
deteriorating conditions are expected to develop late this
evening and into early Tuesday morning. Southern TAF sites and
eastern Utah will see impacts initially, with widespread
precipitation expanding eastward Tuesday morning. A combination of
rain and snow is likely for some valley locations above 6000 feet.

Strong southerly winds will spread across the region today,
otherwise, expect this the be the "calm" weather before the storm.
Attention shifts tonight as a system begins to bring widespread
rain and snow showers across the Western Slope.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Said storm moves across the region Tuesday into Wednesday,
bringing several inches of snow across most of the mountain
ranges. Much cooler weather is likely with this system as a hard
freeze is possible for many of the lower elevations Tuesday and
Wednesday night. Another system on its heels will bring additional
precipitation over the northern and central zones, and even
colder temperatures Thursday into Friday. A slow warm up and dry
weather is in store for the weekend.
