.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Friday night)

Another round of convective storms are blossoming across the
Western Slope yet again. The subtle shift of the upper level jet
and the approaching low pressure system have shifted the window
of instability westward, though clouds have continued to fire off
all mountain ranges as of late this morning/early afternoon. The
convective nature of these scattered cells have lowered snow
levels even down to valley floors, despite warm surface
temperatures observed. However, no accumulation is likely across
these regions thanks to the high, March sun angle and warm
southwest flow. Anticipate the stream of scattered showers to
continue through this evening, with coverage waning overnight into
Friday morning. Additional accumulation will be light, with an
inch or two at best, falling over the southern and central
mountains.
Unless you've been living off the grid that last few days...the
well advertised low pressure system tied to this weekend's winter
storm finally slides into our short term forecast period. The
center of the 500mb, closed low slides across the Desert
Southwest Friday morning and continues an east-northeast track
heading towards the Four Corners. As this transition occurs, the
pressure gradient tightens overhead, and the upper level jet
intensifies as it wraps around the base and eastern flank of the
low. Strong south-southwesterly flow and vort maxima settling in
over Arizona combined with orographic lift and residual moisture
will return an uptick in shower activity across the region by
Friday afternoon. Storms will initially be scattered in nature,
however, a north-to-south oriented band developing Friday evening
has become more evident in hi-res guidance. This band will be in
line with with the upper level jet and downstream strong PVA.
Expect this band to rotate and slowly shift east overnight. This
will be the onset of a busy weekend across the Rockies, with
greater detail hashed out in the long term below...
.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

The strong winter storm will continue to impact the area Saturday
through Sunday night as the mid-level low pressure center over
northeast Arizona moves along the southern Colorado border to
southeast Colorado on Sunday. From there, the low tracks slowly
eastward along the Oklahoma Panhandle Sunday night then to the
central Plains Monday.
Snow is expected to pick up over the forecast area on Saturday as
mid-level q based omega and jet level divergence are maximized with
the system's passage along the south. Steep lapse rates will enhance
snowfall with convective cells increasing snowfall rates. The
limiting factor on this side of the Divide will be moisture depth
with the deep Gulf moisture expected to remain over eastern
Colorado. Meanwhile, milder temperatures in the valleys will
suggests rain or a mix of rain and snow, limiting accumulations
for those areas.
As the storm shifts to the eastern Plains Saturday night models
indicated some of the deeper moisture could reach the eastern Uinta
Mountains. When combined with favorable northeast flow, this influx
could bring prolonged periods of heavy snow. Less of this deep
moisture will be available over the balance of the mountains of
eastern Utah and western Colorado, though snow will continue largely
uninterrupted through Sunday before decreasing Sunday night as the
storm drifts farther eastward. While the Front Range and foothill
areas of northeast Colorado are likely to experience historic
snowfall amounts, accumulations are expected to be less impressive
west of the Divide. Model disparities in QPF remain concerning, and
for this prolonged event most of our higher terrain rests solidly
between Warning and Advisory snow amounts over the 48 hour period.
Consequently, hoisted additional Winter Storm Watches for most
western Colorado mountains.
Model agreement beyond Sunday wasn't very good as the ECMWF and GFS
were vastly different in handling the next storm system moving
across the Northwest. The EC suggested this system will closely
follow this weekend's departing low while the GFS builds a transient
ridge over the area with the next system lingering over the Pacific
Northwest. The NBM favored a blend with the ECMWF solution dominant,
which featured scattered light snow over the northern mountains.
Differences between GFS and EC were more pronounced Tuesday through
Thursday with the GFS unsettled and the ECMWF largely dry. Models
significantly out of phase with one another Tuesday and Wednesday,
but by Thursday were in better agreement with the pattern, though
precipitation potential remained vastly different.
Temperatures during the period will run below normal, potentially
returning to near normal levels later in the week.

Moisture will continue to stream northeastward across the region,
emanating from a low pressure system over the Great Basin. Light
showers will continue overnight before tapering off in coverage
early Friday morning. Showers will redevelop Friday afternoon
before increasing in coverage Friday night. VFR conditions will
generally prevail at all TAF sites through the next 24 hours with
only VCSH expected at this time. However, sites can expect
prolonged periods where CIGS fall below ILS breakpoints.
Additionally, winds will increase Friday afternoon with gusts up
to 25 knots likely at times.
