Snow showers have subsided across the Grand Valley and Grand
Flats, with light snow showers left over higher terrain and
mountain valleys. Minimal accumulation is anticipated with
lingering showers this morning, so have allowed the advisories to
drop off at 0800 MST. However, icy and slick roads conditions are
still possible for morning commute so proceed with caution and
allow extra time to take it slow in the snow.
UPDATE Issued at 628 AM MST Wed Dec 29 2021
Dense fog has dissipated across the Arches/Grand Flat area and
visibility has improved to more than a quarter mile. Therefore,
the Dense Fog Advisory has been cancelled.
Meanwhile, a band of heavier snow showers has developed as
anticipated, extending from the Colorado/Utah state line northeast
across the I-70 corridor near Grand Junction. Given the bands
location and slow progression east, will go ahead and allow the
ongoing Winter Weather Advisories for the Arches/Grand Flat and
Grand Valley areas to stay in effect through 0800 MST. Even in
areas of the valley not receiving snow from this band, icy and
slick road conditions will still be possible for the morning
commute.
UPDATE Issued at 218 AM MST Wed Dec 29 2021
Dense fog has developed across the Arches/Grand Flat area as ample
low level moisture persists. Therefore, a Dense Fog Advisory has
been issued through 0900 MST this morning, though this may be
subject to change depending on how the morning progresses.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 150 AM MST Wed Dec 29 2021
Steady snow showers have continued overnight across the higher
elevations with light to moderate snow falling in some valley areas.
These enhanced rates are most evident across the southern tier of
the forecast area, and are in response to the passage of an embedded
shortwave trough lifting across the Four Corners area. The ongoing
winter highlights remain in effect through 0800 MST with slick,
snowpacked roads anticipated for the morning commute. Considered
cancelling the advisories for the Grand Valley and Arches/Grand
Flat areas, but holding off for now as the NAMNest in particular
is hinting at yet another snow band developing between 0200-0600
MST. The shortwave will slide east of the Divide early this
morning with showers tapering off in intensity and coverage as a
result. Unsettled westerly flow will keep snow going across the
favored west-central Colorado mountains this afternoon, but there
looks to be enough of a break with no significant additional
accumulations to justify the highlights ending at the anticipated
time. Temperatures this afternoon will run 6 to 12 degrees below
normal across the region with inversions not allowing the snow
covered valleys to break above freezing. Low temperatures tonight
will warm by a few degrees as a blanket of mid and high level
clouds engulfs the area ahead of the next system.
The next system will approach the area this evening, first as a
broad Pacific trough moving inland across the western CONUS before
splitting into a cutoff low and an open wave trough. The closed low
will break off near central/southern California before diving south
towards Baja on Thursday. Meanwhile, the open wave will elongate as
it extends through the Intermountain West. Throughout the day on
Thursday, near zonal flow looks to persist aloft across eastern
Utah and western Colorado. PWATs will begin to tick back upwards
in this persistent unsettled flow with values sitting near to
slightly above normal by sunset. As hinted at previously, an
upper-level jet that was temporarily displaced to the south will
be lifted back up into the CWA and locally enhance orographic
snow. Showers will also spread into the adjacent valleys with
activity becoming widespread by Thursday evening. Snow rates will
pick up and, with the already cold airmass in place, densities
will be high. Travel will once again become hazardous in the
higher elevations across the Western Slope beginning as early as
tonight and continuing through the end of 2021. In coordination
with our neighboring offices, opted to leave the Winter Storm
Watches in place through the forecast package, as there are still
some timings that need to be worked out with this next system and
this current one will be wrapping up early this morning.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Tuesday)

Thursday night into Friday looks to be the peak in moisture content
as well as strongest forcing as the positively tilted trough pushes
into the northern Great Basin from the Pacific Northwest. Specific
humidities rise above 3 g/kg while precipitable water climbs to
around 200 percent of normal. Strong southwest flow ahead of the
associated cold front will result in significant heavy accumulating
snow for the mountains with some valleys getting some snowfall as
well, although hard to pinpoint exact amounts for valley locations
and which valleys would be most favored. At this time, looks like
the southern valleys may stand the best chance given the open door
to the southwest flow pulling deeper moisture into that region,
slamming against the foothills. The cold front looks to move through
the area late Friday afternoon through Friday night, switching the
flow to west then northwest on Saturday, bringing some of the
coldest air this season. H7 temps Friday night into Saturday morning
plummet to -12C to -20C across all of eastern Utah and western
Colorado. This means lower valleys could see widespread single
digit lows by Saturday night into Sunday morning once this system
clears out Saturday afternoon. Higher valleys and mountain
locations will be flirting with readings some 10 to 20 degrees
below zero, possibly even colder in some cold pool areas. High
temperatures this weekend will be in the teens for mountains and
high valleys and 20s for the lower valleys. As far as total snow
amounts, the mountain locations look to see 1 to 2 feet of snow by
Saturday morning, with up to 3 feet possible in some mountain
locales.
This system will be strong enough to finally push this unsettled
pattern out of here as a ridge of high pressure builds overhead
Sunday into early next week, providing dry conditions and clear
skies. Temperatures will start off chilly with below normal readings
this weekend, especially in snow covered valleys where strong
inversions are likely to set up. A slow warming trend looks to be
in store for early next week, especially for the higher elevations
as the lower valleys will take some time to break through
inversions. The chances of breaking these inversions is better
Tuesday into mid week as southwest flow increases ahead of another
storm system entering the Great Basin as better mixing is
possible.

MVFR/IFR conditions are expected to diminish from west to east
this afternoon, though snow showers will continue over the Divide
mountains. KRIL, KEGE and KASE will continue to deal with lower
ceilings in snow showers this afternoon. Yet another system will
begin to impact the region tonight and Thursday resulting in
increased showers once again. Gusty winds of 20 to 25 knots can be
expected at most sites along with LLWS as this next pulse of
energy moves through.
