.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 216 AM MDT Thu Apr 8 2021

A midlevel trough will be moving over the northern Rockies later
today, which will increase the winds aloft. Deep mixing within the
warmer than normal air mass will allow these winds to mix down to
the surface this afternoon and evening. Mixing will also drive the
relative humidity into the single digits and teens for the western
half of the forecast area. Dry and windy conditions will lead to
critical fire weather conditions. The Red Flag has been expanded to
include a few more zones. Highs will run around 10 degrees above
normal and some midlevel clouds are expected through out the day.
Late tonight that shortwave trough will clip northern Colorado and
bring snow showers to the northern mountains. Snow is expected after
midnight until about mid day and should remain fairly light. Totals
may be up to a few inches in the Park Range. Localized subfreezing
temperatures are possible in some of the lower valleys where
vegetation is susceptible. The chance for lingering clouds and
relatively low coverage of freezing temps are making it difficult to
justify a warning. Tomorrow the trough crosses the Divide and
cooler temperatures invade the forecast area. Highs will be 8-12
degrees cooler than today. The post-front flow in southwest
Colorado will support critical fire weather yet again in the lower
elevations during the afternoon. Elsewhere, clouds over the
northern and central mountains gradually dissipate.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 216 AM MDT Thu Apr 8 2021

Dry northwest flow will clear skies Friday night and allow winds to
weaken to light, drainage flow. Light winds and clear skies will
favor another night of strong radiational cooling, which may dip a
few lower elevation areas back below freezing temperatures. Despite
another brisk morning, high temperatures will rebound back above
normal values as warm air lifts back into the region by Saturday
afternoon. The roller coaster weather continues as another Pacific
NW system whips across the Northern Rockies Saturday night. Moisture
and the cooler air mass will generally remain north of the area.
However, northeast Utah and northwest Colorado may experience a
slight dip in high temperatures on Sunday with a few showers across
the tips of the Elkhead and Park Ranges possible. Of main concern,
the northerly disturbance will tighten pressure gradients aloft
resulting in another blustery afternoon as we round out the weekend.

Monday will be a transition period, with little change in
temperatures as flow turns zonal aloft. Latest guidance reveals a
more interesting weather pattern across the Western CONUS overnight
into Tuesday. Another lobe of low pressure is expected to dive
southward into the Great Basin, pulling moisture northward.
Precipitation wrapping around the east and northeastern periphery of
the low has been placed directly over the Colorado Rockies. This
signature is consistent in the Euro, GFS, and Canadian 00Z runs,
increasing confidence in wet weather returning to the western slope
mid next week. Ensemble forecasts and deterministic models show
little progression with the low's position, which would maintain an
unsettled weather pattern across the inter-mountain west into the
weekend.

Today a system approaching from the northwest will enhance winds
aloft allowing strong gusts to reach the surface in response to
deep boundary layer mixing. Not much has changed other than a few
more zones were added to the Red Flag Warning. A good portion of
western Colorado and northeast to east-central Utah will have
gusts in the 20 to 40 mph range with RH levels 7-15%.

A cold front crossing the region tonight will leave southwestern
Colorado under post-frontal flow which typically results in strong
wind gusts during the afternoon. Thus, fire weather concerns
persist across the Four Corners Friday afternoon and evening.

This hazardous weather outlook is for eastern Utah and western
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Gusty winds, along with low humidities and dry fuels, will create
critical fire weather conditions this afternoon so a Red Flag
Warning remain in effect across the Four Corners region. Snow
showers will linger over the northern and central mountains until
noon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Fire weather concerns continue on Thursday across portions of
eastern Utah and western Colorado where a Fire Weather Watch
remains in effect. A cold front crossing the region Thursday
night returns the chance for snow across the northern mountains,
though accumulations remain light due to dry conditions in place.
Fire weather concerns return in post-frontal conditions across
Southwest Colorado on Friday. Otherwise, cool and dry conditions
set the stage for another potential freeze for some lower valleys
on Saturday morning.
