Allowed Red Flag Warnings for southeast Utah and portions of
southwest Colorado to expire at 8 PM MDT. Wind gusts and relative
humidity have largely diminished below 25 knots and recovered
above 15 percent, respectively. However, Red Flag Warnings remain
in effect from noon Monday through 8 PM Monday evening for most of
eastern Utah, northwest Colorado and a small portion of southwest
Colorado.

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Monday night)

A few showers and storms have fired this afternoon, generally over
the higher terrain but, with less available moisture, coverage is
considerably less than what we saw yesterday. Similar concerns as
we've seen lately with gusty outflow winds being most common.
Another concern is cloud-to-ground lightning strikes which may,
and have in a few spots, started some fires. Models indicate
convection ending in a few hours and radar returns have weakened
over the last hour so expect this downward trend to continue.

Bad news starting tomorrow and persisting into much of next week
with regards to fire weather concerns. First, a weak closed low
will become an open wave as it moves across the desert southwest
tomorrow. As this occurs, a deeper trough will approach from the
NW and while neither feature will bring much in the way of precip,
they will bring gusty winds to the surface either because of a
tightening surface gradient or stronger winds aloft being mixed
down...take your pick. Broad southwesterly flow will keep dry air
in the forecast and with critical fuels in place, there ya
go...critical fire weather conditions. All that being said, above
normal temps continue in the short term with some gusty winds on
tap for tomorrow afternoon.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday)

A large trough spinning over the Pacific Northwest will continue
through the entire long term period.  By next Sunday, there is
surprisingly little disagreement between the global deterministic
solutions.  Almost all ensemble members show the same pattern
through early next week.  The question is not whether the southwest
flow will continue, but how strong it will be over the next 7+ days.
In other words, expect the hot, dry, and windy conditions to
continue for the foreseeable future. Latest model runs have
loosened the gradient slightly as we head into next
weekend...which is the good news. At any rate, the forecast
challenge is determining exactly how hot, dry, and windy it will
get over the next several days.

A dry disturbance will move through the southwest flow on Tuesday
leading to particularly strong and gusty afternoon winds. The bad
news is that...Thursday looks like it could be another peak wind day
as the resident trough is pushed northeast with another low right in
it's place by the weekend.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as
though this system will bring much moisture along with it.
Ultimately, though, I think this may be a blessing in disguise as
any moisture would probably lead to more even faster-moving
convection over pre-conditioned fuels.  While future model solutions
will clue us in to how the end of the long-term periods evolve,
cautious optimism can be gleaned from the current package at those
(100+ hr) forecast hours.

Not surprisingly, we start out around 5-10 degrees above normal
temperatures for this time of year.  Unfortunately, as we progress
toward the weekend, highs increase yet again to 10-15 degrees above
normals in most places.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night)

Expect VFR conditions with normal drainage flows setting up late
this evening. Less moisture available for showers/thunderstorms
after 18Z/Monday so no mention in any of the TAFs. Winds will be
terrain driven with gusts to 20 mph possible at KEGE, KASE and
KGUC in the afternoon.

Gusty winds will redevelop Monday afternoon and continue into the
evening and look to persist through much of the coming week.
Unfortunately, there's no much sign of moisture so critical fire
weather conditions will continue each afternoon and evening,
possibly as far out as Friday. A Red Flag Warning remains in
effect Monday afternoon and evening for most of eastern Utah,
northwest Colorado and a small portion of southwest Colorado. The
Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday remains in effect and additional
highlights may be called for both Wednesday and Thursday.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorm development over the Colorado
mountains will bring a threat of gusty outflow winds and cloud to
ground lightning this afternoon. Red Flag conditions will bring
elevated fire weather concerns to the 4 Corners area this
afternoon and into the early evening hours.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Hot...dry and windy conditions will continue to bring elevated
fire weather concerns for the much of the upcoming week.
