.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday)

Mild conditions in place this morning as the increase in moisture
has kept dew points up and high level cloudiness in place. Much
drier air will be moving in as stronger Westerlies dip farther
into the Intermountain West. PWAT will waver near the 0.25 inch
mark by tomorrow and beyond which is well...well below normal.
Residual moisture today will lead to some high country storms
developing again in the afternoon heating which remains on the hot
side of normal for early June. The first 5 days of June are in
the top 10 for the hottest start to the month. 2020 was #2 on that
list and #1 was 1977. This is the same year that many of the area
rivers recorded their lowest peak runoff numbers. It appears that
the peak runoff crest of many of the area rivers will be occurring
over the next few days...and these aren't much better than those
of 1977. With that bad news comes more. Above normal temperatures
will remain in place and...when combined with increasing winds due
to the developing E.Pac trough...critical fire weather conditions
will be expanding in coverage. Red Flag Warnings are in place for
the 4 Corners region today and Fire Weather Watches expand north
and east Monday and Tuesday. To end with some good news...the
tornado threat below 11000 feet remains low.
.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday)

Deterministic and cluster models remain in fairly good agreement
through the long term period with some minor differences showing up
in the Day 6 and 7 time periods. These differences don't really
change the resulting forecast so no need to get into the details.
Unfortunately, hot and dry will be the common theme for next week
and with winds picking up, critical fire weather concerns will
increase. Synoptically speaking, a trough sets up over the BC coast
while a shallow closed low remains off the Southern Cali shore. The
trough off the BC coast will cause the pressure gradient to tighten
and cause an uptick in surface wind speeds. As this occurs, broad,
southwesterly flow sets up over the region with little, if any,
precip expected.
Heading into Tuesday, the southern Cali low eventually gets picked
up by the jet and as it moves to the northeast, opens up and becomes
a weak, dry, and shallow shortwave. It's progged to move through
Tuesday and while we'll see an increase in cloud cover, winds also
look to increase and bring another day of critical fire wx concerns.
Wednesday through Friday will see the deeper trough come ashore
along the West Coast and lift northeastward into Idaho and Wyoming.
This trajectory will keep our CWA dry and gusty as the tightened
pressure gradient remains overhead.
As we head into the weekend, dry conditions persist as southwesterly
flow continues and although winds will slacken some, fire weather
concerns will still remain. Temperatures, through the period, will
remain on the warm side of things. All in all, we can expect a hot,
dry work week with some stronger afternoon gusts at times. The
screaming message, if you've not guessed, will be fire weather
concerns for just about the entire week.

High cloudiness will continue to drift over the region through the
next 24 hours. Heating of the day will once again form showers and
storms over the Colorado High Country...but the coverage will be
less than on Saturday. Gusty outflow winds will be the main threat
from these storms with impacts most probable at KASE...KEGE and
KGUC. The storms will end shortly after sunset and VFR will
persist over the next 24 hours.

An extended period of dry and windy conditions will be developing
over much of eastern Utah and western Colorado through at least
the middle of next week. Widespread critical fire weather
conditions in the 4 Corners will spread north and east over the
coming days. Little to no precipitation is forecast for this area
along with temperatures remaining well above normal. Unfortunately
the trend over the next 7-10 days looks the same.
