.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Thursday night)
Issued at 346 PM MDT Wed May 19 2021

Showers and storms fired over the western Colorado high terrain
this afternoon as expected with storms quickly moving off the
terrain into adjacent valleys in a north-northwest flow. Nothing
too concerning as storms moved fairly quickly and exhibited more
of a pop and drop variety, producing more wind than rain due to
dry low levels. Storms are now beginning to enter into northeast
Utah as a shortwave tracks across northern Utah. Once again, these
storms are exhibiting the pop and drop nature. Anticipating more
wind than rain but some storms could produce small hail. These
storms look to track into northwest and west-central Colorado this
evening according to the latest hi res guidance and should
dissipate shortly after sunset as we lose daytime heating.

The strong upper low will deepen over the Pacific Northwest into
the northern Great Basin Thursday, allowing the pressure gradient
to tighten. An 80 kt upper level jet will move into central Utah
out ahead of the main upper level jet rounding the base of the
trough. This will advect drier and warmer air into the region,
resulting in deep mixing across much of eastern Utah and western
Colorado. Good chance that high temperatures on Thursday exceed
normals by about 10 degrees with some of the desert valleys of
southeast Utah and west-central Colorado nearing the 90 degree
mark! H7 winds will increase 30 to 40 kts with H5 winds upwards
of 50 kts. Decided to first upgrade the Fire Weather Watch to a
Red Flag Warning for all zones in eastern Utah and western
Colorado where fuels remain critical (that includes lower
elevations of eastern Utah, northwest Colorado and southwest
Colorado at this time). Secondly, since wind gusts will be
approaching 50 mph in these areas, also issued a Wind Advisory for
Thursday, starting late Thursday morning through Thursday
evening. A 100 kt jet streak will move into eastern Utah Thursday
night, pulling deeper moisture into western Colorado after
midnight Thursday night towards Friday morning, with specific
humidity values climbing into the 5 to 6 g/kg range. This will
result in an increase in cloud cover and precipitation, mainly
across western Colorado, while eastern Utah will remain on the
fringe of this moisture advection. More details on this in the
Long Term section below.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
Issued at 346 PM MDT Wed May 19 2021

The main focus during this period will be on the dry and windy
weather and related fire weather concerns Friday through Sunday for
eastern UT and portions of far western CO, and the likelihood for
decent rain/snow for the central and southern mountains on Friday.

A deep upper level trough will be over the Great Basin with little
opportunity to move thanks to a large blocking downstream ridge
through Saturday. A tight height gradient over our region between
the two major features will result in strong southerly winds aloft
and afternoon gusty winds at the surface. A plume of higher than
normal precipitable water will also be focused over mainly western
CO Friday. While most areas will have a chance of rain, the San
Juans being orthogonal to the southerly flow will benefit the most
from orographic lift with one half to one inch of liquid equivalent
likely Friday. Elsewhere...precipitation amounts will be
considerably lighter...with the lower valleys likely not getting
more than a trace. Snow levels will be high and any accumulating
snow should remain above 11kft. Due to the tight gradient and
strong winds aloft potentially mixing to the surface across
eastern Utah and far northwest Colorado, went ahead and issued a
Wind Advisory for these zones with potential wind gusts up to 50
mph, with gusts to 60 mph over the La Sals. Confidence in stronger
winds meeting wind advisory criteria over the western Colorado
zones is lower due to increased clouds, showers and moisture. It
all depends on where the edge of this moisture resides, so the far
western Colorado zones could see potential for stronger winds.
Will hold off on these areas and let later shifts re-evaluate as
details paint a clearer picture with the next few model runs.

On Saturday, the upper level gradient remains the same, but the
higher moisture content in the southerly plume is expected to shift
eastward, so precipitation coverage will be less. Ensemble models
show the upper level low finally lifting northeast Sunday ushering
in drier southwesterly flow. Dry and a more-relaxed southwesterly
flow is likely to remain over the region through the middle of
the week.

Temperatures near normal Friday and Saturday will go below normal
with the passage of the upper level trough Sunday, then climb back a
few degrees above normal by Tuesday.

A few showers continue at this hour with some stronger gusts mixed
into the mix. These showers will continue to die down over the
next few hours so a few stronger gusts can be expected as well.
The main aviation concern tomorrow will be the gusty winds. All
TAF sites will see gusty winds reaching 30 to 40kts...possibly
higher at times...during the afternoon and evening hours. Aside
from the winds, VFR conditions will be the rule across the
forecast area.

Issued at 346 PM MDT Wed May 19 2021

Showers and storms will continue through this evening, favoring
high terrain with some drifting into adjacent valleys, generating
more wind than rain. Southwest flow will bring drier air and
stronger winds on Thursday, leading to widespread critical fire
weather conditions where fuels are critical. This now includes
lower elevations of southeast Utah, southwest Colorado and
northwest Colorado with the latest fuels update. Therefore,
upgraded the Fire Weather Watch for Thursday to a Red Flag Warning
for these zones where fuels are critical. The threat will be
limited to southeast Utah on Friday as moisture increases across

approaching 50 mph both Thursday and Friday. Decided to issue a
Fire Weather Watch Friday for just the southeast Utah zones where
fuels are critical. Critical fire weather concerns return this
weekend as drier air returns with the trough passage to the north
as Friday's moisture exits to the east.

This hazardous weather outlook is for eastern Utah and western
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Thunderstorm development will be possible again over much of the
Colorado high country and adjacent valleys today...with a few
isolated storms possible in the lower valleys. Gusty outflow
winds and small hail will be the main threats.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Afternoon thunderstorm development will be possible over portions
of the eastern Utah and western Colorado through the remainder of
the week. Critical fire weather conditions will become widespread
by Thursday in strong/gusty winds. Additional fire concerns
return this weekend.
