.SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday)

A few showers are lingering along the northern divide this morning,
but any precipitation associated with them likely isn't reaching the
ground. These should be out of the area by daybreak, with partly
sunny, warm, and dry conditions expected for the day. Highs today
are forecast to be around 10 degrees above average. Breezy
conditions return this afternoon as a trough off the west coast
slowly moves inland. Ahead of this trough, strong southwest flow is
expected to develop. With RH values forecast to meet criteria across
much of the CWA, Red Flag Warnings are in effect for this afternoon
and evening. Additionally, as winds have the potential to gust as
high as 50 mph across northern zones, a wind advisory is in effect.
Debated adding zones further south, along the I-70 corridor, but
held off as conditions look borderline.
Latest guidance continues to indicate winds will remain somewhat
elevated Sunday night, particularly across southeast Utah and
southwest Colorado. This will keep the atmosphere well mixed
overnight, which, combined with increasing cloud cover, will keep
overnight lows quite mild. Additionally, these overnight winds will
hamper RH recovery. Breezy conditions are expected to return Monday
afternoon as the Four Corners region is expected to remain under
strong southwest flow through Monday evening. This, combined with
low RH values exacerbated by poor overnight recovery, leads to
potential critical fire weather conditions. A Fire Weather Watch has
been issued for Monday for Utah zones 491 and 490, Colorado zones
207, 290, 292, and Colorado zone 295 below 8000 feet.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

By Monday evening the front pushes into northwest portions of the
forecast area. Showers look to increase in coverage as the front
slides eastward. Some of the high res models are showing pre-
frontal instability and banded precip associated with the
frontogenesis. Overnight the precip will spread across the
remainder of the forecast area especially in the higher terrain.
By Tuesday morning the front exits the area, but if the low pressure
closes off to the southwest of the Four Corners there could be some
lift that enhances the showers through out the day. Flow shifts to
the west and eventually northwest favoring those slopes. Showers
will likely also be enhanced by the day-time convection on Tuesday.
There are a few models slow to kick the low pressure out of the
Desert Southwest on Wednesday, so there is a slight chance for
showers to linger in southern Colorado. It appears most locations
will remain dry though for now. Overall the total QPF has increased
probably due to influence from the high-res model and daytime
instability. and the system closing off. The most likely time frame
for impacts from snow may be Tuesday morning mainly at pass level
unless the clouds can hang around some impacts may linger into the
day.
The new trend in the models now is to stall this low pressure over
NM and northern Mexico mid week, which is supported by roughly half
of the ensembles. This will have implications on the ridging that
attempts to build across the western CONUS and nose over us. This
may likely dictate how warm and dry we get in the later half of the
week. Unfortunately, we could be looking at another round of
elevated fire weather conditions under this ridge. Hopefully the
lacking pressure gradient will keep the winds near or slightly below
criteria. Hard to tell at this point with that stalled low pressure
around. Another strong system is forecasted to impact the Pacific
Northwest this weekend and drop southeastward towards our area early
next week.

Passing mid- and high-level clouds will continue throughout the
next 24 hours, but no CIG or VIS issues expected. VFR conditons
will prevail, however gusty winds are expected to impact all
terminals. In particular, KGJT, KRIL, KCNY, and KHDN will see
gusts of 35-45 knots, while other TAF sites will see gusts in the
30-40 knot range. Turbulence and possible low-level wind shear
are expected across the area this afternoon.

Critical fire weather conditions will return this afternoon as winds
pick up and RHs drop below critical levels. Red Flag Warnings remain
in effect with southwest winds gusting 30-50 mph and relative
humidity dropping to near 10 percent. Given the strong winds and
very dry air, there is potential for today to feature conditions
that are more severe than typical. Increasing cloud cover Sunday
night into Monday will keep RH values above critical thresholds for
much of the area, despite continued gusty winds. However, across
southeast Utah and southwest Colorado, RH recovery may be hampered,
and critical fire weather conditions are possible again Monday
afternoon. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for winds gusting 35-
45 mph and RH values in the 10-15% range. Cooler and wetter
conditions are expected to arrive by Tuesday.
