The radar mosaic is showing the passage of the mid level trough
axis early this morning. Southwesterly flow over the eastern San
Juans is being replaced by Northwest flow on the upstream part of
this range. The GOES ALPW product also suggested a fairly good
moisture tap ahead of this axis and both Telluride and Gunnison
reported some moderate precipitation earlier this morning. This
moisture will be flushed east with the trough passage. However
enough residual moisture will remain for additional shower and
thunderstorm activity to develop today as steep mid level lapse
rates remain in place. Most of the forcing will be orographic in
nature so chances remain higher over terrain. A transitory ridge
moves in overnight along with warm advection aloft helping to
stabilize things so quick end to showers are expected after
sunset. The southern tail of the system pushing the ridge axis to
the East on Saturday will brush our far northwest CWA. The dry and
highly mixed atmosphere could trigger some building CU in the
vicinity of the Uintas but have little confidence much
precipitation will make it to the ground. The main concern will be
the windy and dry conditions in place increasing the fire danger
once again across much of the lower desert region near and
northeast of the 4 Corners region. Temperatures today will remain
near to slightly below normal as this back of the larger scale
trough works through. Saturday will see a good warmup above normal
thanks to the ridge and the highly mixed atmosphere moving in.

On Sunday, the next system will move inland and increase the
pressure gradient across the region. This will cause the Red Flag
conditions to spread from the Four Corners up to the Wyoming
border. Wind gusts will also be stronger with gusts around 30-40
mph common along the UT/CO state line. Sunday will also likely be
the warmest day of the week ahead of the approaching system. There
appears to be decent lift prior to the arrival of the actual cold
front, which will pass through the area on Monday. The cloud
cover and potential precipitation should keep cool temps closer to
normal. There are indications that this system could produce an
AR that infiltrates the region, but the trough is fairly
progressive. So while rain and snow showers may be widespread the
duration might not allow much accumulation. The front exits the
region some time on Monday night leaving northerly flow in it's
wake. Temps on Tuesday will be below normal with lingering showers
especially in the higher terrain. A majority of the mountain
ranges could receive several inches from this event. After that an
upper ridge builds over the region causing conditions to dry out
and warming temps.

lingers into Sunday. A ridge of high pressure moves in for the
weekend leading to above normal temperatures. This in turn will
bring deep mixing, tapping into the stronger winds aloft, and
allows for low afternoon humidity. Sunday looks to be the windier
of the days as the next weather system moves into the West. Trends
of this system look to bring much cooler and wetter conditions to
the area by Tuesday.
