.DISCUSSION...
...High Fire Danger Possible on Saturday for NE Montana...

MORNING UPDATE:
A slightly breezy, but quiet day is in store. No updates were
necessary to the going forecast this morning is in good shape. Rux

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION:
Today will feature seasonably warm and dry
conditions across NE Montana with light area winds, generally
northwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Attention will turn to fire weather concerns on Saturday as an
approaching cold front leads to a ramp up in winds late in the day
in the presence of low relative humidity, dry fuels, and potential
area thunderstorms with the cold front. A Fire Weather Watch is in
effect for Saturday afternoon and evening for all fire weather
zones except for 120 where relative humidity is forecast to be a
bit higher. Future shifts can give additional consideration there
after another look. Breezy conditions Saturday afternoon into the
evening will also likely create boating impacts in and around the
Fort Peck Lake area.

Sunday, temperatures will be cooler following the frontal passage,
though an isolated to scattered thunderstorm will remain possible.
Cooler temperatures will likely linger into Monday before
ensembles point to a return to warmer temperatures by the middle
of the week as new upper ridging gets going across the western
U.S. and extends reach into the Northern High Plains.

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions are expected across area terminals for today. Look
for northwest winds between 5 and 15 kts.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The combination of warm, dry weather ahead of an approaching cold
front and gusty winds in the presence of dry fuels may lead to
critical fire weather conditions. Relative humidity may drop as
low as 14 percent during the afternoon as northwest winds of 15 to
20 mph with gusts to 35 mph spread any new fire starts rapidly to
the southeast. In addition, any thunderstorms that develop will
present lightning risk. Wetting rains are not likely at this
time. Due to the increased risk of fire danger, a Fire Weather
Watch is now in effect for Saturday afternoon and evening for all
fire weather zones except for 120. There, relative humidity is
presently forecast to be a bit higher.

Timing of concern may have to be adjusted as the risk due to
lightning is balanced with the expected nighttime relative
humidity recoveries. In addition, stronger winds are likely to
persist until about midnight or so. That said, behind the front,
relative humidity level should rapidly recover by about 9PM or so,
which may reduce the risk during the late evening hours.
