...HISTORIC WINTER STORM POISED TO IMPACT THE REGION SUNDAY AND
MONDAY...

Impacts will begin as early as Saturday morning with patchy 
freezing drizzle developing late tonight into Saturday morning, 
which will lead to a light glaze of ice in some locations. After a
brief break in precipitation on Saturday, conditions will begin 
to deteriorate late Saturday evening, with precipitation 
transitioning from a sleet and freezing rain mix to all snow by 
Sunday. The heaviest snow can be expected on Sunday and Monday. 
High winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow with wind chills
falling to below zero by late Sunday. Snow will come to an end 
during the day Monday, but extremely cold temperatures will 
persist through mid-week. The heavy snow and forecast long 
duration of extremely cold temperatures will likely lead to major 
stress on the region's infrastructure as well as crippling travel
for several days.

Key Messages:
(1) Freezing rain mixed with sleet continues across much of North
Texas. Additional accumulations of one-tenth to one-quarter inch
are likely. A Winter Storm Warning continues through 6:00 p.m. CST
this evening.

(2) Temperatures across the region will remain below freezing for
at least another 24 hours. Any ice already on the roads will
remain there through tonight and much of Friday. Roads will
continue to be very hazardous.

(3) Cold and windy conditions will continue into Friday with
Friday morning wind chills expected to be in the upper single
digits to lower teens across the region.

GOES-E water vapor channel imagery shows a potent upper-level
shortwave trough moving over the south-central CONUS and northern
Mexico. The axis of this trough is along a line from El Paso to
Cabo San Lucas. At the surface, a front remains stalled near the
Texas Gulf Coast with a 1014 mb low located off the Louisiana
coast south of Lake Charles. Strong isentropic ascent continues
above the surface front with a pronounced frontal inversion noted
near the 850 mb level (1,300 m AGL). The majority of precipitation
occurring across Central Texas is falling as freezing rain, but
some of the stronger convective elements are also producing sleet
where parcels are able to be lifted into the dendritic growth
zone.

HREF guidance continues to show the heaviest freezing rain
accumulations along a line from Temple to Fairfield where
widespread ice accumulations of more than one tenth of an inch are
expected. Locally higher amounts in excess of one-quarter inch
will be possible, particularly within the heavier convective
elements. Freezing rain should end from southwest to northeast,
ending across the region this evening.

Overnight, temperatures will remain quite cold with the entire
forecast area falling into the upper teens to mid 20s. This means
any icy conditions that have developed today, will persist through
the overnight hours. It is important to stress this point: road
conditions will remain quite hazardous through at least Friday
morning. The good news is that no additional ice accumulations are
expected as drier air will begin to move into the lower levels of
the atmosphere. Heading into Friday, cold and breezy conditions
will continue. A few peeks of sunshine may be possible in our far
northern counties, but most of the area will remain overcast.

Main Points: Ongoing cold conditions become dangerously frigid
over the weekend and continue into next week, leading to a
prolonged period of temperatures remaining below freezing.
Widespread snowfall still looks likely late Sunday and Monday,
with more chances for snow around the middle of next week. Travel
Impacts appear likely for the first half of next week.

Weak ascent will develop into Friday morning as the shortwave
responsible for ongoing precipitation turns east across south
Texas. This may produce more light freezing drizzle and cause
more minor impacts on bridges and overpasses. Most areas,
however, should remain cold and dry as arctic air remains in
place, with highs topping in the 20s and 30s.

The upper level pattern is expected to remain active through at
least the middle part of next week. The next shortwave will drop
southeast across the Desert Southwest and Northern Mexico Friday
and Friday night and head for South Texas on Saturday. Most
precipitation associated with this feature will remain to our
south, but may still bring a few pockets of light sleet with no
impacts expected. A much stronger disturbance will cross the Four
Corners Saturday night and head for West Texas on Sunday. This
shortwave will be embedded in broad cyclonic flow aloft and will
be capable of generating widespread precipitation as it moves
across the Southern Plains. All key ingredients will be in place
(moisture, lift and cold air), and confidence remains fairly high
that snow will be the dominant and possibly the only precipitation
type.

Using a combination of the National Blended Model along with
other ensemble mean data creates fairly widespread storm totals of
3 to 6 inches from Sunday through Monday, with the highest totals
along the Red River. In reality, some areas could receive
significantly more while others significantly less, and it's still
too soon pinpoint these details. After coordinating with
neighboring offices, the consensus was that 84 hours in advance is
too soon for any headlines, so the event will be emphasized in a
Special Weather Statement and highlighted with graphics and
social media posts with this package. Significant travel impacts
would result from such a storm, especially if models begin to
trend toward the higher snow totals.

The system will continue off to the east, ending precipitation
from west to east Monday afternoon and evening. Meanwhile, an
upper low which had been anchored over Manitoba will finally shove
off to the east as well. This combination will unleash a stronger
an colder southward push of arctic air through the Plains,
bringing North and Central Texas some of the coldest air it has
experienced in 30+ years. Widespread single-digit low
temperatures are likely Monday and Tuesday, with exceptionally
cold conditions continuing Wednesday. Persistent north winds of 15
to 25 MPH will produce wind chills at or below zero for much of
the region for the first half of the week.

Yet another upper level system will bring additional snow chances
on Wednesday, though too much uncertainty still exists regarding
specific totals. Whatever the case, the next week will be full of
weather hazards, and folks are urged to make plans to protect
themselves and those vulnerable to extreme cold, cover any
exposed pipes, ensure your pets are indoors, and any other
outdoor animals have adequate shelter.

by 00Z. In the D10 TRACON, MVFR CIGs persist, with some slow

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for North and Central Texas.

.DAY ONE...Rest of Today and Tonight.
Widespread freezing rain can be expected through the rest of today
across parts of Central Texas. Accumulations of around one tenth of
an inch are expected, with locally higher amounts in excess of one
quarter of an inch possible. These ice accumulations will lead to
extremely hazardous travel conditions. People are urged to stay home
unless travel is absolutely necessary. Temperatures will remain below
freezing through the overnight hours, meaning ice will remain even
after precipitation has ended.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.
Exceptionally cold conditions are likely this weekend through the
middle of next week. Wind chill values will fall into the single
digits (possibly below zero in some locations) starting Saturday and
continuing through at least Tuesday.

Snow is expected across most of the region late Sunday through
Monday. Some significant accumulations may occur with temperatures
falling below 10 degrees and breezy conditions. Significant
disruptions to travel will likely result.

Spotter activation is not expected at this time, but reports of
accumulating freezing rain and/or sleet are appreciated.
