A Heat Advisory continues today as some parts of Young & Stephens
Co(s) will reach to near 105 degrees, with the rest of the
forecast area ranging from 97 to 103 degrees, so yes, it will be
hot, stuff, and oppressive today. Tonight, more of the same,
though stratus may be delayed until after daybreak Friday morning.
Regardless, it will be very warm and muggy, or as some say,
"sticky". Otherwise, not much to add on this update.

The next 24 to 30 hours, or through tonight, will not be all that
much different than Wednesday was. A low level jet of 25-30 knots
will draw stratus northward once again, and it is expected linger
well into the early-mid afternoon hours. This was evident
yesterday, and with a strong subsidence inversion remaining based
near 850mb, with a 3 to 4 kft depth of tropical moisture below
it, it'll take until late in the day to break free from the
stubborn strato-cu expected. Similar to yesterday, this may be a
saving grace to limit high temperatures mostly in the upper 80s to
middle 90s in a few areas west of I-35. Regardless, coastal-like
surface dew points in the 70s won't mix out much due to the
aforementioned depth of the moisture below the inversion. In
addition, any later day sunshine and insolation will continue to
work upon plenty of standing water, moist vegetation, and ground
to result in plenty of evapotranspiration into the lower
atmosphere today.

Combine very warm afternoon temperatures in the 90s and the
tropical moisture in place, and it will "feel like" around 100
degrees or even a hotter. A few areas out west in the Heat
Advisory area will experience "feel like" temperatures around 105
degrees. This is oppressive heat by anyone's standards despite
heat index values being below advisory criteria. We strongly urge
that those outdoors for any period of time or doing strenuous
activities to be cognizant of the heat and humidity. Be sure to
stay hydrated, wear light colored and loose fitting clothing, and
take frequent breaks in the shade or in any source of air
conditioning. There will be a nice southerly breeze of 10 to 20
mph, but it will only abate the effects of the heat so much. Stay
safe and careful out there!

Otherwise, both this morning and Friday morning will be warm and
very muggy, despite a modest southerly breeze around 10 mph. In
other words, it's going to feel very "sticky" outside with lows
struggling to fall into the lower-mid 70s each morning across
North and Central Texas.

Early season ridging aloft will dominate the weather into the
upcoming weekend. While such an anticyclone is by no means
unprecedented during the first half of June, mid-level heights

remarkably good agreement. As a potent shortwave swings through
the Rockies and into the Northern Plains on Friday, the ridge axis
will rotate clockwise, steadily raising heights above North
Texas. For our region, the ridge will reach its peak strength
Saturday and Sunday when high temperatures will have corresponding
maxima. The anticyclone will reamplify early next week,
diminishing mid-level heights above North Texas and introducing
northerly or easterly flow. This will steadily reduce temperatures
next week while returning rain chances to our forecast.

Steady south winds on Friday will continually refresh the moisture
within the surface layer that might otherwise mix out. The capping
inversion that will be further fortified by the strengthening
ridge will also serve to keep the elevated humidity within the
boundary layer. But as the low-level heat content continues to
rise, the clouds that have been trapped beneath the inversion will
more easily erode. Although heat index values will approach or
exceed 100 across much of the region Friday afternoon, the
greatest potential for values in excess of 105 will remain within
Stephens and Young counties where the existing heat advisory may
need to be extended.

As the ridge builds in on Saturday, wind speeds will diminish.
Both will raise daytime temperatures, but the reduced moist
advection may allow dew points to diminish a bit in the
afternoon. This may be just enough to prevent the heat index from
reaching advisory criteria, even in Stephens/Young where triple
digit temperatures will be offset by dew points falling into the
60s. This is not to say that the weekend will be pleasant. In
fact, without the wind, the potential for heat exhaustion may
actually be worse. People who rarely leave air conditioning may
engage in outdoor activities this weekend, and this heat will
easily be the most intense so far this year. Even for those of us
who are more frequently outdoors, these conditions have not been
experienced since the end of last summer. Extraordinary heat early
in the season can be especially dangerous since many people are
not yet acclimated to the conditions or accustomed to taking
necessary precautions.

While there are still prospects for a weak frontal boundary to
invade on Sunday, the air in the Central Plains will have been
equally baked by the ridge, and no discernible difference in
temperature would result. A few isolated showers or storms will be
possible Sunday afternoon deep into East Texas where the ridge's
grip will be diminishing. As the ridge shifts further west into
the upcoming workweek, northerly or even easterly flow will
steadily reduce temperatures and increase rain chances. High
temperatures will fall below normal by Tuesday and Wednesday; the
better shower/storm chances these days will be focused in Central
and East Texas.

As expected 24 hours ago, flow is slightly weaker and more veered
than yesterday. As such, stratus is having to surge NE from the
Hill Country and has mostly been confined along and west of I-35
and south of I-20 at this hour. It still appears we'll still see
broken MVFR cigs BLO 2 kft through much of the morning, before
rising into low VFR. I do expect we'll see eventual scattered by
mid afternoon and beyond.

Otherwise, the 06z TAF discussion below remains valid as it
appears an even more uncertain and slower MVFR surge arrives
primarily after 12z Friday. South winds 10 to 15 mph will prevail,
with a brief backing to the SE early-mid evening and with
occasional gusts to/or in excess of 20 knots during latter diurnal
hours.

The morning hours will basically be a carbon copy of yesterday
morning regarding the arrival of MVFR cigs back into the area by
12z, continuing through 18z. SSW flow of 25-30 knots noted on
VAD wind profilers from area radars will draw the MVFR cigs
already developing across the Texas Hill Country NNE across all
terminals. Waco Regional Airport being in Central TX will likely
see these cigs a few hours earlier in the 08z-09z time frame.
South winds will average around 10 knots though certainly
couldn't rule out a few gusts to between 15-20 knots through 18z.

A strong subsidence inversion remains based near 850mb with
plentiful tropical moisture below that level. Cigs will slowly
rise into high MVFR above FL020 after 15z, then rise into low VFR
by 19z, lingering through 21z considering the depth of moisture
below the inversion. As surface temperatures warm into the upper
80s and 90s later in the afternoon, look for low VFR cigs to
finally scattered with south winds 10-15 knots, with a few gusts
in excess of 20 kts. Scattered Cu and breezy southerly winds will
continue with VFR through much of tonight. There are signs some
patchy MVFR cigs may evolve again Friday morning. However, at
this time, confidence is not high that they will arrive before
12z Friday with veered 925mb flow around 25 knots.

Unseasonably warm and humid conditions today will yield heat index
values near or in excess of 100.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.
Hot and humid weather will continue through the upcoming weekend with
heat indices between 100 and 105 degrees across a few areas.

Thunderstorm chances will return on Sunday and continue through
the middle of next week. These storms would be primarily during the
afternoon, particularly across Central and East Texas.
