.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Stratus has persisted through the overnight in areas along and west
of the James River Valley, but as of yet, models still hard-pressed
to capture the current extent of the lower clouds. Will stick with
persistence through the morning, with total cloud cover gradually
increasing farther east as mid-high clouds continue to slide over
the region. The increase in clouds and generally cool air mass will
keep temperatures near to below normal today, with highs from the
upper teens-lower 20s east of I-29, to near freezing west of the
James River Valley.

Far southwest portions of the region will be watch blossoming area
of light snow from southwest SD into western Nebraska, as this may
still scrape Gregory County with some flurries/light snow through
early afternoon, but little if any accumulation expected into our
forecast area at this time.

By late tonight, will be watching the start of our upcoming snow
event, with snow spreading into western parts of the area in
response to increasing warm advection ahead of approaching wave.
Minor differences in how far east the snow will develop prior to
12Z, but consensus keeps bulk of the snowfall along/west of the
James River Valley, with perhaps some flurries approaching the
Interstate 29 corridor.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Lift ahead of the wave increases rapidly after 12Z, which should
lead to quick expansion of light snow eastward along the advancing
warm front, primarily focused along/north of Interstate 90 through
the morning. Models do depict a band of mid-level frontogenesis
which could briefly enhance snowfall rates, but this feature looks
to be progressive enough to prevent excessive snowfall in any one
location, instead allowing for an hour or two where rates could
exceed 0.5"/hr. South of this east-west oriented snow band, multiple
high-res models are showing a window of drier low level air working
northward, possibly as far as north as the I-90 corridor by midday,
before mid-level wave triggers additional development southward
again across southeast SD, into eastern NE/northwest IA by mid to
late afternoon. This activity will continue to work eastward into
the evening, ending most areas by 06Z or shortly after as the wave
passes east of the forecast area. Winds still look to remain in
check, possibly gusting as high as 25 mph at times on Saturday.
While patchy blowing/drifting snow is possible, this should not
enhance any impacts already seen from the falling snow.

Snowfall amounts remain on track with previous forecasts, generally
ranging from an inch or so along the Missouri River Valley, to a
broad 3-5 inches along and north of I-90. Highest amounts still
focused toward southern Minnesota, where isolated 6+ amounts are
still indicated in some models. However, greater potential for these
higher amounts lies closer to the Minnesota River Valley, with the
latest probabilistic snowfall information showing very low chances
for greater than 6 inches across our forecast area. With growing
confidence that snowfall will largely remain within the 3-6 inch
range, have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas along/north
of I-90, dipping just into the northern tier of our northwest Iowa
counties. Further adjustment to the advisory area is possible, most
likely related to impact of midday drying across our southeast areas.

Latter half of the weekend should be less eventful with weak surface
ridge moving across the region. Winds will be on the lighter side, a
good thing as temperatures hold below normal.

Early week precip chances remain uncertain, as multiple southern
stream waves slide through the central Plains. Deterministic models
similar in keeping precipitation chances largely south of our
forecast area later Sunday night/Monday, but GEFS/ECMWF ensembles
indicate potential for some light accumulation working into areas
south of I-90. Next wave slated to move through sometime in the late
Tuesday-early Wednesday time frame, and while this currently looks
to be the better chance for additional light snow spreading into our
forecast area, uncertainty in timing details precludes making any
adjustments to the low blended pops at this time.

While confidence in snowfall chances is on the low side, confidence
in the colder air settling into the region early next week remains
higher, with Monday and Tuesday looking to be the coldest days of
the week. Highs will likely hold in the teens-lower 20s, with lows
Monday dropping to the single digits or possibly a few degrees below
zero. Winds remain relatively light given the weak surface pattern,
but with the colder air in place, most locations have the potential
for sub-zero wind chills by Tuesday morning.

Latter half of the week trends back toward more mild pattern, with
drier conditions looking to prevail as well.

Guidance is poorly handling an area of MVFR stratus sliding
through central SD, so confidence is low with regard to how this
may affect KHON and possibly KFSD. Models want to erode these
clouds over the next few hours, though not sure that is going to
happen. At this point, did include an MVFR deck at KHON, but did
not do so at KFSD, though cannot rule it out. Otherwise, winds
are expected to continue to diminish through the night time hours,
becoming light on Friday.
