.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday Afternoon)

Mild start to the day with current temperatures in the 30s to
lower 40s. Have seen some strong wind gusts around 30 mph or
higher with low pressure traversing SD this morning. This has also
lead to stronger winds with tight SPG, although winds have
lightened for areas near the center of the low. Despite some
echoes on radar this morning, have not seen any reports of precip
reaching the ground across northwestern IA, likely due to high
cloud bases and dry air below. Could still see some light precip
in northwestern IA (and possibly southwestern MN) before daybreak.

Most of today will be quiet and partly/mostly cloudy as we await
the arrival of our next low pressure and this morning's low
departs. Winds remain elevated today and shift to the northwest.
Expect highs in the 40s. Lows tonight fall into the 20s, with
cloud cover increasing.

Consistency has been key in the synoptic pattern the last few days
regarding our system, which will bring moderate to heavy snowfall to
likely a wide portion of the area. Models have slowed again a touch,
with the northward shift mentioned in the previous discussion still
apparent in the 0z GFS run and 6z NAM run available this morning.
QPF values have also increased a bit, which has led to a somewhat
dramatic and still uncertain, increase in snowfall amounts (more
details below). As mentioned in the previous discussion, snowfall
will be focused along a couple of areas of frontogenesis at
various levels by late tonight and through the day Friday.
Although some models have hinted at potential weak instability
above these layers of f-gen, general consensus from soundings is
that the layers are mostly stable. So, with broadly focused f-gen
at varying layers as well as WAA across a good portion of the
area, would expect the heaviest snowband to remain as a broad
swath (versus tightly focused band). Progressive nature of this
low also lends to more broad areas of snow through the period.

Now... let's talk timing, headlines, and accumulation. Have slowed
the onset slightly of precip across south central SD. Do expect the
bulk of the accumulation to occur between 12z Friday and 0z Saturday
for all areas with the exception of south central SD, which looks to
see the majority of its snow between 0z and 18z Friday. With regards
to amounts, current storm total snow accumulation is in the top of
most ensemble guidance (similar story for QPF). However, with
deterministic models coming in both a bit further north with the
bulk of the QPF/snow as well as amounts trending upward once again,
this leads to some confidence issues in current forecast. Believe
that most of the area will likely see totals on the lower end of
these ranges, but that the high end amounts are well within the
realm of possibility given the broad forcing, and plenty of
saturation within and below the DGZ. There is also a bit more
confidence in the potential for higher end amounts with previous
model consistency, although recent wobbles have decreased this.
Given the confidence issues with regards to how much snow may fall,
and exactly where, have chosen to expand the previously issued
Winter Storm Watch a tier of counties northward and split into two
segments to better fit the onset of snow timing. Will use trends in
later model runs to make further decisions on headlines.

Regardless, this storm will likely have a significant impact to
travel across the region through the end of the week. Although winds
will not be too strong, gusts up to 30 mph at times will lead to
reduced visibility and some blowing (possibly drifting) snow.

.LONG TERM...(Friday Evening through Wednesday)

Snow should be mainly along and east of I-29 by Friday night, fully
tapering off and exiting by Saturday afternoon. Colder air will be
in place with northwesterly flow.

After the trough departs on Saturday and snow comes to an end, weak
and fairly flat ridge takes shape for the second half of the weekend
and to start next week. Could see a wave pass through around the
Tuesday timeframe, although models show a large amount of
disagreement. Temperatures will likely be impacted by potential
snowpack, but generally expect near average temps. Expect pattern
change by mid next week as trough develops over the Western CONUS
and begins to shift to the east. Given the focus on the upcoming
snow, did not stray from the NBM.
