Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 908 AM MST Fri Jul 2 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue each afternoon through the weekend. A potential decrease in storm activity could occur early to mid next week. && .UPDATE....UPDATE...Forecast is largely on track with minimal updates made. Shower activity is moving southeast to northwest as seen on radar across Gila and the southern Yavapai, Coconino, Navajo and Apache counties. && .PREV DISCUSSION /509 AM MST/...Convective activity in northern Mexico has continued overnight loading the atmosphere advecting into southern Arizona with moisture. Dewpoints have risen into the 60's to near 70 in the lower valley with 50's moving up onto the Mogollon Rim. This will give us scattered thunderstorms today along and south of the Rim and isolated storms extending north of the Rim to the Chuska Mountains along the New Mexico border and to about I-40 elsewhere through the region. These storms will move slowly creating the potential for localized areas of heavy rainfall mostly south of the Mogollon Rim. The main threats today will be the frequent lightning, heavy rain with localized flash flooding and strong outflow winds. Saturday will see similar conditions with the moisture band pushing farther north to about the South Rim. Expect this pattern to continue through Monday. Beyond Monday, the ensemble models and model guidance tend to dry the region out with just isolated thunder along the eastern Mogollon Rim into the White Mountains. Looking at the synoptic pattern, the models agree with the high currently over Saskatchewan and Manitoba rapidly descending down over Minnesota through today and ejecting the low over the Great Lakes to the northeast Saturday. This will bring a rapid change to the flow pattern over the Western US, mostly north of Utah and Colorado. By Saturday morning an upper-air zonal flow sets up across the northern states that will continue through the next week while high pressure builds in over the Southwest. There is disagreement on the impacts of the Southwest high pressure. While the models indicate the high will shut down convection with mid to high level warming, the low-level flow will continue to pump moisture north out of Mexico in the bottom two kilometers of the atmosphere. With the clear skies due to subsidence under the high allowing strong diurnal heating and the high low-level moisture in place, we can expect isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms each day, especially south of the Mogollon Rim and down into the lower valley through the coming week. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z package...Mainly VFR conditions for the 24 hour TAF forecast period.
