Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 1013 PM MST Wed Jun 9 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Strong southwest winds and low relative humidity will produce critical fire weather conditions near the Utah border on Thursday. Winds then decrease from Friday onward. A significant warming trend develops this weekend and into next week, with daytime temperatures rising to near record levels. && .UPDATE...Scattered high clouds continue to stream across Arizona tonight in advance of a trough moving into California/Nevada. Only minor adjustments were made to the forecast this evening but overall it remains well on track with no major updates. && .PREV DISCUSSION /208 PM MST/...High clouds are streaming over northern Arizona this afternoon and helping to keep temperatures a few degrees on either side of normal for early to mid June. Expect winds to decrease overnight for areas south of the Mogollon Rim and remain locally breezy tonight for the high terrain near the Utah border. Any mixing tonight could prompt warmer temperatures. A shortwave trough rotating within a larger trough off the western coast will move onshore tonight. The tightened gradient through tomorrow mid-day will increase wind speeds over northern Arizona by late morning. Expect daytime wind gusts of 30-40 mph near the Utah border and closer to 25-35 mph from around I-40 southward. Those gusty winds near Utah, very low relative humidity and dry fuels have prompted the issuance of a Red Flag Warning for far northern Arizona and parts of the Navajo Nation on Thursday. Elevated fire weather conditions and periods of near critical fire weather are expected closer to the Mogollon Rim and southward tomorrow afternoon. The longwave trough over the western coastline will break down by weeks end as the synoptic pattern changes to increasing high pressure from Mexico. The high pressure is progged to move into Arizona by late this weekend and setup in persistence through at least mid-next week. The main forecast change then will be quickly warming temperatures across all of central and northern Arizona beginning Sunday and onward. The lower elevations of the Grand Canyon, near Page, and throughout Yavapai and Gila counties are likely to see warm overnights beginning early next week, along with the very hot daytime temperatures. If you have outdoor plans for late this weekend and throughout all of next week, plan ahead now for these very hot temperatures. Ensemble guidance is showing the slightest hints of afternoon high-based thunderstorm chances over the White Mountains early next week. Confidence is low at this point in any thunderstorm chances, although keep in mind the possibility for dry lightning if confidence builds with these through this weekend. && .AVIATION...For the 06Z package...VFR conditions continue for the next 24 hours with broken high-level cloud cover. Stronger southwest winds at 15-25 kts with gusts up to 35 kts after 17z Thursday.
