...HARD FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM CST FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 14 expected.

* WHERE...All of south central Texas.

* WHEN...From 9 PM this evening to 10 AM CST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other 
  sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor 
  plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent
freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should
be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have
in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-
ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

.SHORT TERM (Tonight through Friday Night)...
An upper level shortwave trough continues to move across Texas this
afternoon producing snow across much of South Central Texas. The
trough axis will be east of our CWA by the start of this period and
precipitation will have moved off to the east. In the wake of this
trough colder air will move in. Northerly winds will bring drier,
colder air. Skies will clear overnight. This will allow for bitterly
cold temperatures tonight. Lows across our CWA will be mostly in the
teens with some lower 20s across the south. We have issued a Hard
Freeze Warning for tonight and Friday morning. These cold
temperatures will also be a problem for travel as any water on roads
is likely to freeze and any ice will remain there. Stay home if you
can. High pressure will build over Texas Friday bringing dry
weather. Skies will be mostly sunny and temperatures will climb
above freezing. High temperatures will be mainly in the 40s except
for the extreme northeasterly part of the CWA where they will still
be in the upper 30s. This should lead to good melting during the
day. Friday night will continue to be dry and mainly clear. Winds
will be lighter allowing for good radiational cooling. Low
temperatures will be warmer than tonight, but still very cold
ranging from the upper teens to near 30. We may need another Hard
Freeze Warning, but will let future forecasts cover it.

.LONG TERM (Saturday through Thursday)...

Rather steady warming trend will be underway through the weekend and
into next week after our historical week of extremely cold air and
winter weather. The only slight deviation from that trend will occur
late Sunday into Monday as an upper level trough quickly progresses
eastward to our north, which brings a cold front across the area
after midday Sunday. A small chance for rain showers could clip our
eastern and southern counties as the front pushes through but have
elected to cap POPS at 10% for now. Biggest impact and concern with
the long term period is another very cold night from Friday night
into Saturday morning, especially for locations that are along and
east of I-35 due to very efficient radiational cooling from clear
skies and very light winds. Following the cold front passage that
occurs Sunday, the Hill Country is expected to see some freezing
temperatures from Sunday night into Monday morning. This hopefully
is the last of the freezing temperatures for a while (at least this
forecast period) across the region. The next mid-level trough and
slight opportunity for rain arrives soon after the end of this
forecast period.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for South-Central Texas..

.DAY ONE...Today And Tonight.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect today for the Rio Grande
Plains, southern Edwards Plateau, Hill Country, and San Antonio
metro area. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, locally up to 8
inches, will be possible across portions of the Rio Grande Plains,
southern Edwards Plateau, and western Hill Country, mainly west
of I-10 and along and north of U.S. 90. Elsewhere, 1 to 3 inches
of snow are possible across the warning area. Additional ice
accumulations of a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch are
possible. Travel could be very difficult.

Elsewhere, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today. Snow
accumulations of a light dusting to up to 1 inch and ice
accumulations of a light glaze are possible across the advisory
area. Travel could be hazardous in some spots.
