* A portion of south central New Mexico, including the following

  Basin.

* Until 6 AM MDT Thursday.

* Showers and thunderstorms will be possible for the remainder of 
  tonight. Up to an inch is possible, which could lead or worsen 
  some flash flooding.

VFR conditions expected to prevail through forecast period. TS
coverage will be limited today, mostly over mtns. Thus, no
mention in TAF at this time. Skies begin SKC-FEW080 becoming
SCT080 with CB over local mtns by 21Z. Best chance of direct
impacts will be at KTCS today, with outflow winds gusting to 25
knots. Winds generally 080-120 at 06-10KT, shifting to VRB04-08KT
overnight. No reductions in surface visibility expected.

.SYNOPSIS...
Scattered storms in the mountains and isolated in the lowlands
persist over the next two days. By Wednesday evening, tropical
moisture associated to the remnants of Nora will move over the
area. This will bring chances for heavy rain especially in areas
west of the Rio Grande on Wednesday, and for the rest of the area
on Thursday. Over the weekend, we return to a more typical monsoon
pattern for September with scattered storms in the mountains and
isolated in the lowlands. Temperatures will be at or slightly
above normal through Tuesday, then cool down on Thursday and
through the rest of the week.

.DISCUSSION...
.SHORT TERM...Today and Tonight...
Broad high pressure is beginning to set up over the desert
Southwest which will eventually become a big player by mid-week as
it will steer where Nora's remnants go. As for this afternoon,
monsoonal moisture is still lingering. PWs will be around 1.1-1.2
inches or so, which is just above average. Orographic lift will
initiate thunderstorms today around noon, and could spark off some
isolated lowland storms. The Gila region looks to have the best
potential for the scattered storm coverage. Models are agreeing on
this region to have CAPE values of around 1000 J/kg, give or
take. CAMs are suggesting thunderstorms in southern Hudspeth
county. However, all convection should generally die off for the
evening hours. High temperatures will be right at average tomorrow
with values in the low 90s.

.LONG TERM...
Upper high over northern NM intensifies on Tuesday. This will
lead to some subsidence which will reduce the amount of possible
storms in the area. Therefore, continue to expect scattered storms
in the mountains, and isolated storms in the lowlands which will
be mainly produced by the interaction of outflows in the later
part of the afternoon. The main concerns with any storm will be
brief periods of heavy rain and gusty winds, and some small hail.
The highest temperatures of this week will be on Tuesday too. The
lowlands will be in the mid 90s which is slightly above normal for
late August. The weather pattern is expected to change on
Wednesday with the approach of tropical moisture.

Tropical moisture associated to the remnants of Nora will move
into AZ on Tuesday and Wednesday. It will start slipping into
southwestern NM on Wednesday morning. Precipitable water values
increase to 1.5 inches per the GFS and the NAM over SW NM, then
slowly expands through the Rio Grande Valley by the afternoon and
evening hours. There are even hints at PWs up to 1.6 to 1.7 inches
with both models. So, it will be very wet for early September. PW
records for September 1st and 2nd are around 1.5 inches. So, we
may be tie or break them with this moisture influx. Global models
appear to be faster than yesterday bringing this moisture in too.
Anyways, it still looks like El Paso would see its best chances
for rain on Thursday as the upper high settles over the Central
Plains. Heavy rain and flash flooding will be the main concerns on
both days as we remain quite moist and unstable. My main
uncertainty at the moment is how fast the moisture will move east.
Global models appear to be faster than yesterday bringing this
moisture in too. It will depend on where the upper high axis is
located on Wed/Thu. The farther east it moves towards the
Mississippi River Valley, the more likely it will be for the
moisture to reach the Rio Grande Valley earlier. A couple of
models are indicating an earlier arrival, so we will have to keep
an eye out for this with the next model runs.

On Friday, the upper high strengthens over the MS River Valley
along with an upper trough developing off the West Coast, which
will keep the plume of moisture right over our area. So, the
chances for showers and thunderstorms continue into the weekend.
Heavy rain and flash flooding continue to be a concern on Friday.
However, the upper high elongates in a east to west orientation
this weekend which tries to shut down the influx of moisture. So,
POPs decrease on Sat/Sun.

Temperatures will be below normal from Wednesday through Friday
as we keep moisture in the region. The lowlands will be in the
upper 80s. Over the weekend, temperatures increase but remain
below normal with the lowlands having temps around 90.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Another monsoonal day with scattered thunderstorms in the higher
terrain and isolated chances in the lowlands is in store for
today. Isolated flooding and gusty outflow winds will be the main
threat. With moisture lingering in the area, fire danger will be
low throughout the week. Maximum temperatures will be average for
the first part of the week, hovering in the low 90s. Winds will
generally be out of the southeast with ventilation rates Poor to
Good for the first part of this week. Min RH will be 25-35% and
will increase each day as the moisture from Tropical Storm Nora
approaches by Wednesday.

terrain of the Gila Wilderness and Sacramento Mountains this
afternoon, with localized flash flooding due to heavy rains.
Rainfall amounts in excess of two inches per hour will cause rapid
water rises and drainage flows in a few areas.

Campers and hikers should stay away from arroyos and drainages
near thunderstorms, and drivers should avoid active low water
crossings.
