morning. Periods of heavy showers spreading across the cold
airmass will favor significant mountain snowfall lasting through

.SYNOPSIS...Precipitation is expected to continue through the
holiday weekend, with continuous heavy snowfall on the western
ridges of the Klamath Mountains above 2000 ft. Thunder and
accumulating small hail is possible along the coast. Snow levels
will fall late Saturday through Monday, bringing 1 to 4 inches of
snow as low as sea level. Cold weather is expected through the work
week.

.DISCUSSION...Today has been another blustery day for the North
Coast. Several lines of showers have passed over the area. Some
lightning has been observed mostly around in Del Norte County with
small hail extending south along the Humboldt coast. Gusty winds
have mixed down in showers with gusts near 30 mph observed in
Eureka. Fresh Snow is evident at mountain passes such as Collier
Tunnel and Oregon mountain and as close to the coast as Kneeland.
Convective showers and heavy mountain snow are expected to continue
this evening with a Winter Storm Warning in effect. With
northwesterly winds, snowfall is forced on the western side of
Klamath Mountains. NBM shows a over a 90% probability of a foot or
more at all high elevation passes above 2000 ft except Buckhorn
Summit. Berry Summit looks the worst with about 20 inches forecast.
Snow should stay above valley floors for the time being.

As a strong trough continues to deepen and move on shore, a lobe of
cold air will swing over Northwest California. 700 mb temperatures
will continue to cool through late Christmas night bottoming out
around -15 C. Sporadic convective showers are expected to continue
through the day Saturday helping to mix colder temperatures to the
surface. Convective showers will maintain a slight risk of lightning
and accumulating small hail through the weekend. Snow levels will
progressively lower throughout the day Saturday from about 2000ft in
the early morning to below 1000 ft early Sunday. While most
deterministic model guidance shows snow levels bottoming out around
1000ft (the NAM being an exception), NBM 4.1 still has about a 25%
chance of 2 inches of snow at sea level Saturday night through
Sunday morning. Up just a couple hundred feet along many passes of
101 in Humboldt and Mendocino counties that probability increases to
70%. Model soundings consistently show the freezing level just a few
hundred feet from the surface, even at the coast. Meanwhile, cold
air aloft is helping support sustained periods of CAPE in excess of
150 J/kg. This may allow snow levels to drop to sea level in the
midst of convective cells, supporting accumulating snow. A Winter
Storm Watch has been issued along the coast and in southern
Mendocino Saturday night to cover this scenario. Continued heavy
snowfall is a certainty at high elevations. The western ridges of
the Klamaths will remain the focus with additional 20 inches
possible at Berry Summit, 12 inches at South Fork Mountain, and 14
inches at Collier Tunnel.

Snow levels will briefly rise Sunday afternoon and evening before
another lobe of cold air crashes down early Monday bringing 700mb
temperatures as cold as -17 C. This will help bring snow levels back
down to sea level, likely more consistently than Sunday. Though
there are likely to be fewer and weaker showers Monday morning, the
colder temperature will help any accumulation stick better. NBM 4.1
puts a 40 to 60% chance of atleast 2 inches of snow on the Humboldt
and Del Norte beaches with a 40 to 60% of 4 inches above 500ft on
highway 101. Snow will generally be less further south, but an inch
or two is likely as far south as Ukiah and the hills of southern
Lake county. High elevation snow will start to taper of Monday, but
accumulation in excess of a foot is still possible on the western
side of the Klamaths. There is still some uncertainty in the
relative timing of lingering showers and lowering snow levels, which
could substantially reduce low elevation snow. That said, the
significant impacts justify the continuation of the existing
Winter Storm Warning and Watch to cover Monday morning.

Calmer weather looks to settle in beyond Monday alongside cold
arctic air. All clusters have cold air sitting over Northwest
California to some degree through the week. This will lead to very
cold temperatures. Tuesday looks to have the strongest cold air
advection. Alongside fresh snow, NBM 4.1 places less than a 50%
chance of most interior valleys even breaking freezing. Low
temperatures below freezing are likely all week, even along the
coast where a killing frost seems almost certain. Very light snow
and rain showers alongside gloomy skies are possible through
Wednesday with hopefully clearer and somewhat milder conditions
thereafter. About 40% of cluster members have more seasonable
temperatures build in by next weekend while the other 60% have
cooler conditions persist. /JHRW

.AVIATION...Instability and gusty westerly winds prevail after this
morning's rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and small hail. Flight
categories at KCEC should improve to at least MVFR although the
possibility of small hail and vicinity thunderstorms continue through
tonight. KACV's gusty westerly winds will ease by the early evening
and veer to a southerly bearing. Rain and overcast ceilings around
3000 feet should prevail until Christmas morning with VFR/MVFR
categories. KUKI will transition to light southerly winds this
evening but mostly VFR with 6000 foot ceilings.  Rain and lower
overcast ceilings at KUKI will set in overnight bringing flight
categories down to MVFR and possibly IFR with reduction in
visibility and ceilings around 2000 feet. /EYS

.MARINE...A substantial upper level trough has remained fairly
stationary just off of the far eastern Pacific Ocean, or the PacNW
relative to the continental US. This has resulted in gusty
westerlies and Gale conditions in the northern outer waters. Gale
conditions will ease late tonight as winds diminish to a moderate
breeze. WNW winds will build Saturday in the early evening and peak
early Sunday morning at a strong breeze. Conditions will remain in
small craft advisory criteria through late Sunday night. A northwest
swell will max out around 15 feet at 13 seconds Saturday morning but
will linger around 12 to 13 feet through Monday. Wind waves,
associated with the previously mentioned WNW winds, will also make
for choppy and tumultuous seas at 7 feet and as many seconds. /EYS
