in Trinity County on Tuesday...

.The first in several rounds of precipitation expected to impact
northwest California through the holiday weekend will arrive in
Trinity County Tuesday morning. While snow levels will be on the
rise across areas to the west and southwest, snow levels in
Trinity County will start off around 2000 to 2500 feet Tuesday
morning. This may allow for some minor accumulations even at
Weaverville, but snow levels should rise above 3000 feet later in
the day or Tuesday night. Precipitation will taper off Tuesday
evening. Snow levels are expected to be mainly above 4000 feet
with the next round or two of precipitation Wednesday into
Thursday, before much colder air begins flowing in late Thursday
through the weekend.

* WHAT...For the Winter Storm Warning above 4000 feet, heavy snow
  expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, with
  higher amounts in the Trinity Alps. For the Winter Weather
  Advisory above 3000 feet, expect periods of wet snow with additional
  snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches.

* WHERE...Northern Trinity County. 

* WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, from 1 PM Wednesday to 10 
  AM PST Thursday. For the Winter Weather Advisory, until 10 PM 
  PST this evening.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be difficult over some mountain passes
  along Highways 3. Plan on slippery and potentially snow- covered
  roads, and carry chains. On Wednesday and Wednesday Night,
  travel over Scott Mountain Summit could be very difficult to
  impossible.

.SYNOPSIS...Gloomy, mild weather is expected for most the area today
with isolated light rain along the Humboldt and Del Norte coasts.
Gusty winds look to arrive Monday with more serious rain and snow
starting Tuesday. Steady rain and snow will most likely continue
into Christmas weekend with increasing chances of low elevation
snowfall.

.DISCUSSION...Overnight conditions are much warmer tonight thanks to
high clouds blanketing the area and building southerly flow. Few
stations look to reach near freezing by sunrise. The deep area of
low pressure off shore has continued to stall along with the upper
level trough. This will keep most of the moisture transport parallel
to shore, only curving inland in Oregon. That said, a stray shower
or two of light rain is certainly possible along the Humboldt and
Del Norte coasts today and Monday. Lake and much of Mendocino county
will have a final glimpse of Sun today before gloomy conditions
settle in across NW California Monday through the Holiday weekend.

While models are trending to slow the system delaying more
significant rainfall to Tuesday, pressure gradients still look to
tighten Monday as the system approaches shore. This will bring gusty
southeasterly winds, mostly to the high ridges of Humboldt County.
While NBM places 40 to 60% chance of 40 mph gusts around Humboldt
bay, it now only has a 10 to 20% chance of 50 mph gusts. The best
chances for 50 mph gusts are around Kneeland. While winds will
certainly be gusty and long lived during the day, wind advisory
chances still look local and marginal.

The NAM's solution from yesterday is now reflected in the majority
of model guidance. As the trough approaches shore, a stream of
moisture transport looks to curve into shore, focusing precipitation
in Mendocino and Lake counties. While its arrival is delayed, the
speed of the system remain on track behind this first pulse,
resulting in an overall shorter period of moisture transport.
Rainfall estimates for Tuesday are now much smaller than previous
forecast, placing only 1 to 1.5 inches in Lake and Mendocino
counties with 0.6 inches or less north of Cape Mendocino.

Snow is still expected for Trinity county on Tuesday. The slow track
of the storm has more strongly shifted winds southeasterly, which
may result in stronger adiabatic cooling against the Trinity Alps.
The GFS and NAM reflect this possibility, dropping snow levels as
low as 1500ft while NBM stays solidly above 3000ft. In either case,
low elevation snowfall is now a reasonable possibility, though
restricted to Trinity County. Thankfully, overall snowfall amounts
are now less. NBM place only a 30 to 40% chance of 4 inches of snow
at mid elevation passes like Buckhorn and Oregon Mountain. Snowfall
at the peak of the Trinity Alps is now less than 1 foot. Meanwhile,
there is now a 40 to 50% chance of at least some accumulating snow
along the valley bottom sections of 299 and highway 36.

After a brief lull in precipitation, about 50% of ensemble clusters
bring another, stronger pulse of moisture in late Wednesday into
Thursday. The other clusters show a similar pulse, just of a weaker
nature. This pulse could bring 1.5 to 2 inches of rain throughout
the area. In the stronger scenario, this pulse is accompanied by a
burst of cold arctic air by late Thursday and early Friday, which
could again drop snow levels below 2000ft. In addition to Trinity,
snow becomes more likely in Humboldt and Mendocino counties as cold
air settles in. NBM places a 25 to 35% chance of 4 inches of snow at
Berry Summit, South Fork Mountain, and Oregon Mountain by Friday.
This pulse will also bring a prolonged period of gusty southwesterly
winds throughout the area as it makes landfall. NBM shows these
gusts easily breaking 40 mph on ridges from Del Norte to Lake
County, with the highest gusts restricted to Northern Humboldt and
Del Norte Counties. There is currently a 50 to 70% chance of gusts
exceeding 50 mph in Crescent city and high elevation ridges in the
area.

Rain and snow is expected to continue in some form Christmas eve
through the Holiday weekend. About 40% of cluster ensembles members
show the trough intensifying and coming onshore Christmas day. This
could bring a continuation of heavy rain and snow for Holiday
travel. If the trough intensifies, air aloft will be very cold. Both
the deterministic GFS and Euro show snow levels down to sea level by
Sunday with a 20% chance of accumulating snow in Eureka and
Crescent City and a 50% chance along highway 101 in Mendocino
County. In this scenario up to 2 feet of snow could fall near Berry
Summit and South Fork Mountain with up to 3 feet in the Trinity
Alps. While more modest scenarios are also likely, the high impacts
of this outcome will require close observation /JHRW

.AVIATION...The most problematic TAF site early this morning is
KUKI, where fog and low ceilings are expected to persist through
late morning. Elsewhere, light showers have spread north from KACV
to KCEC. Short term model guidance indicates KACV will likely be dry
during the remainder of the morning into the afternoon. However,
periods of light rain will continue at KCEC through this evening.
Marginal reductions to visibliity will be possible at KCEC with the
occurrence of heavier precipitation rates. In addition, low-level
wind shear will persist at KCEC throughout the 24 hour TAF cycle due
to the occurrence of a 35-45 kt southerly coastal barrier jet.

.MARINE...A frontal wave is in the process of stalling offshore.
South winds are subsequently strengthening in between the front and
the coast, and that will yield gale force gusts over the outer
waters through Monday evening. Near shore, gusts to gale force will
be possible in the vicinity of Cape Mendocino, while steep hazardous
short period seas occur elsewhere. Beyond Monday, additional rounds
of strong south winds and steep seas are likely as a series of low
pressure systems impact the west coast.
