AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Mostly sunny skies are expected through Saturday, with
chilly morning lows. Rain will return to northwest California on
Sunday with a cold front, with wintry weather returning Sunday
night and lingering into Monday.

.DISCUSSION...Overall it has turned out to be a very nice
afternoon across northwestern California, with high temperatures
across the interior rising 10 to 15 degrees warmer than Thursday's
readings. Sunshine has been plentiful after the clearing of some
morning valley fog. At the immediate coast, some pesky stratus has
lingered near Humboldt Bay and the mouth of the Eel River, but at
least the onshore breeze is not quite as brisk as yesterday. This
stratus will expand along much of the coast this evening through
Saturday morning, keeping morning low temperatures a bit milder.
Dewpoints across much of the interior are much lower than
Thursday, but since temperatures are starting quite a bit higher,
lows Saturday morning should not be far from what we saw Friday
morning. Still have some Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories
hoisted for portions of Mendocino and Lake Counties.

A cold front will make it's way toward the coast on Sunday, with
increasing clouds Saturday night. Rain will overspread the area
from west to east on Sunday. Amounts are staying consistent with
previous model guidance and forecasts; mostly in the half to one-
inch range, with lighter amounts for southern Mendocino and Lake
Counties. The rain with the front will be beneficial and of very
little impact. More questions and somewhat greater concerns
surround what happens in the wake of the front Sunday evening
through Monday. Latest deterministic runs have changed course and
are now closing off a very cold upper-low later Sunday, and
sending it across our area Sunday night into Monday, with
lingering showery precipitation. These solutions are on the
colder/wetter end of the range of solutions, with quite a bit of
model spread toward milder/drier, but for now these solutions line
up well with the ensemble means and the bulk of members. What all
this amounts to may be quite a bit of downpours in the wake of the
front on Sunday night into Monday morning, with small hail a good
bet given the degree of cold air aloft. While the upper-low and
bulk of the showers should start to shift southeast of our area
heading into Monday, it is possible the threat for small hail
showers will linger. The other impactful aspect will be
lowering snow levels, from around 2500 feet Sunday evening to as
low as 1500 feet by Monday. For now have limited accumulations in
the 2 to 6-inch range to areas above 2000 or 2500 feet, as
showers should wane on Monday, not to mention the snow levels may
not end up quite that low. Stay tuned to later forecasts, though.
There will likely be a break in the weather with high pressure
around Tuesday or Wednesday, followed by more active weather to
end next week. /AAD

.AVIATION...Stratus streets offshore elude to northerly flow, at
and above cloud heights, according to visible spectrum satellite
imagery. Flight categories at the KACV have toggled between IFR and
VFR due to persistent scattered/broken cloud sections.  Winds at the
coastal terminals are expected to shift from northerly to easterly
late tonight into Saturday morning. Light SE winds shift to a
westerly breeze by early afternoon tomorrow. Lingering coastal
stratus overnight may keep fog from developing near the coast.
Inland valleys, with lingering moisture, may get some fog in the
morning. Otherwise, VFR conditions should prevail at KUKI with
possibly some low level moisture tomorrow morning. /EYS

.MARINE... Winds will continue to weaken tonight and will shift
to southerly by tomorrow afternoon as another front approaches.
Southerlies will then ramp up and become strong breezes to near
gales over the waters by early Sunday morning with gusts up to 40
kt. Northerlies are forecast to return by late Sunday evening. A
diminishing northwest swell will be reinforced tomorrow as a larger
northwest swell is set to begin to move through the waters Saturday
afternoon. This swell will peak at 11 to 13 feet around 12 seconds
