AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.Discussion...
Issued at 241 PM CST MON FEB 15 2021

Key messages:

- Dangerous cold to continue through Tuesday as lows Tuesday
  morning drop into the -10s to low -20s. Wind chills may be as
  cold as -35 in northwestern MO tonight.

- Light snow will continue into the evening hours. Another half an
  inch to possibly an inch is possible in the KC area with 1-2
  inches possible in our eastern zones.

- Another system may bring light snow to the area Wednesday.

- Temperatures get tantalizingly close to freezing Friday but
  Saturday looks more certain to move back above the freezing mark
  with highs in the mid to upper 30s expected.

Discussion:

A fairly strong upper-level shortwave trough is tracking across the
central and southern Plains currently. The bulk of the forcing
associated with this shortwave is south of the area but there is
strong enough ascent and enough moisture that a broad area of snow
has pushed northward to encompass the southern half to two-thirds of
the forecast area. This snow has been mostly light with pockets of
moderate snow and visibility down to 1/2 of a mile at times.
Regional radar, satellite imagery, and surface observations show
the back edge of the deformation area pivoting over the eastern
half of Kansas. This area will track to the east, with the mid-
level low, and as the ascent begins to wane as the wave moves
east, snow will taper of from west to east.

The next challenge with this system is how quickly cloud cover moves
away. Model soundings really want to linger low cloud cover well
into the overnight and into tomorrow morning. This will likely
be the case in our eastern zones but the real question is where
this breakup of the clouds will be in our west. This has a
noticeable impact on overnight lows. Where clouds do look to
clear out overnight, and with high pressure building in, overnight
lows will likely fall into the -20s. This is most likely over
northwestern MO and eastern KS. Confidence is lower over east
central KS and west central MO as some models keep the cloud cover
and some move it away. Regardless of the cloud cover, it's going
to be extremely cold. But is it around -10 cold or -20 cold.
That's the effect the cloud cover will have.

Another shortwave trough will track mainly south of the area Tuesday
night into Wednesday. Broad ascent ahead of the wave will lead to
light snow building northward into the forecast area early Wednesday
morning and persist through midday. Moisture is limited but with it
being so cold, this system could produce another 1 to 2 inches of
snow across mainly southern half to two-thirds of the forecast area.

In the wake of the mid-week system, another round of really frigid
air will move through the area Thursday. That looks relatively short-
lived with shortwave ridging building east into the middle of the
country Friday into Saturday. While it still looks below freezing
for Friday, increasing heights and thicknesses will help
temperatures climb into 20s to lower 30s. Saturday is looking like
the day when we climb back above freezing. The shortwave ridge
slides across the area and as another shortwave trough takes shape
west of the area, low-level winds become southerly and help moderate
things with highs climbing into the mid to upper 30s.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northwest...north central and
west central Missouri...as well as extreme eastern Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Dangerously cold conditions will continue through the day into early
Tuesday morning. Minimum wind chills this morning will range from -25
to -35 F. Through the day, wind chills will range in the negative
teens to -25 F. Later tonight, temperatures will drop well into the
negative teens to -20 F range.

Periods of light snow remain possible for much of central and
southern Missouri. Additional accumlations of snow, between a dusting
to 1 inch are possible. The greatest chance for accumulating snow
will be across central Missouri. Snow will taper off from west to
east through the mid afternoon and evening.

Dangerously cold temperatures will persist through Tuesday. The
coldest temperatures will occur Tuesday morning, with air
temperatures in the negative teens to negative 20 and wind chills
expected in the negative 20s.
