My how the tables have turned... Just a couple days ago temperatures
were in the mid-50s giving just a hint of Spring. Now bitter cold is
on our doorstep and looks to overrun much of the central CONUS.
Friday is looking to be the last hurrah of relatively warm
temperatures.

A weak cold front and accompanying shortwave are making their way
across northern MO early this morning triggering a few show showers.
The rest of the day looks pretty calm as sunshine and a few clouds
allow highs to reach around 40. NW upper level flow begins pushing
cold air into the area eventually dragging down a large surface high
pressure. As this high makes its way into the central CONUS
Saturday, strong cold air advection from the north and widespread
cloud cover override any temperature gains from diurnal processes
resulting in a trend of frigid temperatures. The polar front sags
southward passing through the area Saturday afternoon. This does two
things: 1) Enhances the interactions of mid level shortwaves and
surface boundaries/systems triggering snowfall and 2) Solidifies
bitterly cold temperatures for much of next week.

Starting with the snow, the surface Canadian high runs into a
passing leeward low pressure system to our west and south. The low
and high compete for spatial dominance. Surface convergence and
isentropic ascent along the boundary of these two systems as well as
a deep fairly saturated dendritic growth layer provide ample
opportunity for widespread snowfall. Several midlevel shortwaves
move through the area further enhancing instability. There are still
several uncertainties in the snowfall forecasts with some guidance
being rather bullish and others taking a bearish approach. The mean
suggests much of the snow to be concentrated north of US50 with most
areas seeing 2-3" with areas of 4"+ in far NW MO. Areas south of
US50 look to see around 1"-2" of snow.  The spatial relationship of
these dueling cyclones will be paramount in determining where, how
long, and how much snow will fall.

What is becoming more certain is a polar plunge due to strong cold
air advection from the north. The Canadian surface high plunges
through the area Saturday which begins the initial dip; however, as
it pushes farther south even colder air surges in behind it further
decreasing temperatures. Widespread cloud cover over the next
several days limit any diurnal temperatures gains. Highs during most
of next week look to struggle to get to 20F with lows around and
below zero. Some days may see wind chills dip into the single
digits. Precautions should be taken if doing any outdoor activities
over the next several days. Long range guidance indicates the bitter
cold is going to be sticking around for quite a while.

VFR conditions expected through the afternoon and overnight.
Conditions will begin to deteriorate from NW to SE around sunrise
as a system brings snowfall to the area. Have trended toward low
MVFR ceilings and IFR visibility with the snow from mid tomorrow
morning through the end of this forecast. Snow should be winding
down after 18Z tomorrow. Winds will generally be light this
afternoon into the overnight and then begin to increase early
tomorrow morning and shift to to the north as the surface low
tracks to the south of the area.

 the area. High temperatures will struggle to reach 20F. Wind chills
 Sunday and Monday morning will range from 5 to 15 degrees below
 zero. These frigid temperatures are expected to be prolonged and
 last through next week.
