Initially precipitation may fall as rain or a wintry mix of rain, sleet, or freezing rain, but by late Monday morning all precipitation should switch over to snow. Even before the heavy snow starts area roads within the watch may be slick due to the potential for off and on freezing rain. There will also be a very tight gradient between the highest snowfall amounts across far northern Missouri and very little snow, more toward the Highway 36 corridor and areas south of there. So it will remain necessary to stay up to date with the latest forecast trends, as even the slightest shift north or south will mean very different snowfall totals. Key Points:
- Abundant cloud cover with areas of drizzle possible through the
overnight into Sunday morning. Temperatures are expected to be warm
enough to lead to minimal impact, with the exception of far
northwest Missouri.
-Strong mid level wave is expected to impact the region on Monday,
creating the potential for heavy snow across portions of Northern
Missouri. Have issued a winter storm watch along and north of
highway 36.
Detailed discussion...
Radar returns are starting to increase across eastern Kansas into
northern Missouri as a series of weak impulses move across the area.
These waves are expected to lead to increasing saturation aloft and
may see pockets of drizzle develop through the overnight. Near
surface layer still remains quite dry with dew points in the single
digits and lower teens, so will take some time to get precipitation
at the surface. Models have warmed the lower levels through the
evening into the overnight, so unless we wetbulb below freezing, any
precipitation overnight should remain drizzle. The exception of
this would be across far northwest Missouri where surface
temperatures will fall within a few degrees of freezing.
Abundant clouds are expected through the day on Sunday keeping
temperatures from warming substantially. As long as light
precipitation is able to come to an end through the day, should see
temperatures creep into the mid and upper 30s north of the Missouri
River; however, if precipitation lingers, will likely see cooler
temperatures throughout the day. These temperatures will be
important as it will set the stage ahead of a vigorous shortwave
moving in to the plains on Monday.
Ahead of the wave, abundant Gulf moisture is expected to spread
northward with PWAT of 0.5-0.75". Isentropic lift on the 290-300K
surface increases through the evening hours Sunday night from south
to north, leading to rain developing. As precipitation shield
expands north of the Missouri River, precipitation type is expected
to transition to a wintery mix with a warm nose in the 900-800 mb
layer remaining and sub freezing surface temperatures. Cooler air
aloft is expected to wrap into the region along with dynamic cooling
resulting in a transition from freezing rain to snow Monday morning
along and north of highway 36. Kissing jet streaks will also aid in
enhancing the lift through through at least the morning hours on
Monday. Strong lift is expected through the afternoon hours, leading
to heavy snowfall rates through the afternoon hours on Monday. Lift
is expected to weaken across the area on Monday evening, but still
lingers along the Iowa/Missouri border Monday night and possibly
into Tuesday. Am still a bit concerned with moisture availability
with this system as it appears there will be a significant amount of
warm sector convection downstream with this system. This will be a
key thing to watch as the system approaches. Despite moisture
concerns, strong low level theta-e advection is strong enough for
the potential for heavy snow and have elected to issue a winter
storm watch along and north of Highway 36 for Monday into Tuesday
morning.
Will also need to keep an eye on Wednesday as an upper wave across
the western US lifts north and phases with a kicker wave. Models
are suggesting that the southern wave would be the stronger of the
two systems, with northern Missouri possibly getting split by the
two waves. For now, have chance pops in the forecast with these
systems.
Thereafter, upper ridge is expected to build into the central US
leading to warming/melting around the region.

Fairly pessimistic forecast in store for the terminals over the
next 24 hours, with minimal time at VFR conditions. Low clouds
will persist at the terminals through the night tonight and
through Sunday. Light precipitation will form early Sunday
morning, but doesn't look like it will be frozen. After a lull
through the day on Monday, more widespread rain/snow moves into
the terminals late Sunday night. More frozen precipitation, mainly
at KSTJ and to a lesser extent KMCI is in store beyond the
timeframe of this particular forecast.
