A surface high will track eastward across the the Upper Midwest
today with the surface ridge moving across the forecast area.
This will keep our winds relatively light and variable through
much of the day until later this afternoon when south winds should
prevail as a result of the high moving east of the area. This
will keep the humidity at bay most of the day until the afternoon
when low-level moisture returns to area in the form of low to mid
70 degree dewpoints.

For the start of the work week, an upper ridge will strengthen over
the middle of the country. High temperatures should be able to climb
into the mid to upper 90s Monday and Tuesday with the upper ridge
centered over the Southern Plains. With southerly low-level flow
bringing increasing moisture into the area, in addition to
evapotranspiration of area crops, dewpoints are expected to climb
into the middle 70s, leading to heat index values climbing into
the 100 to 105 range. It's possible a heat advisory will be needed
for portions of the forecast area Monday into Tuesday.
Coordinating with neighboring offices, have held off issuing one
with this forecast package. There is also some uncertainty with
regards to cloud cover and precipitation chances. Both the NAM and
the GFS show an area of strong isentropic ascent in the 310K
layer with some showers and storms possible early in the morning
to early afternoon. The best chances of this look to be in our
eastern zones but it throws enough uncertainty into things to hold
of heat headlines for now.

The hot weather continues through late in the week with the center
of the upper high spreading over the forecast area through Thursday.
For Friday, the upper ridge shifts to the east with a trough moving
across the Northern Plains. This cools things off a bit but we
should still see highs climb into the 90s. While there are some
precipitation chances nearly every day later this week into the
weekend, the best chances look to be this weekend as a weak front
may settle into the region as the upper ridge weakens/shifts
eastward.
