...AVIATION UPDATE...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 302 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021
Large, temporarily Rex-blocked closed upper low noted on water vapor
imagery over the 4-corners region, streaming a classic lee-side
baroclinic leaf up the plains. This feature will be the Sunday night
into Monday weather maker as it tries to steam-roll eastward but
battling both sfc and upper ridging acrs the mid and upper MS RVR
valley regions. But until then, the 1030 mb sfc ridge currently in
place from the Dakotas, to the eastern OH RVR Valley making for a
fine early March afternoon locally with many temps in the mid 50s,
to near 60. But it's looking like headline-able winter weather is on
it's way.
&&
.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Sunday)
ISSUED AT 302 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021
Tonight...The effects of a strong ridge axis in place and subsidence
should make for a mainly dry night with just incoming rounds of mid
and high level clouds. But some elevated light showers and or
sprinkles will look to try to stream in from the west acrs the
southwestern to southern third of the CWA a bit before dawn,
probably more in virga form then making it to the sfc especially as
it tracks eastward. Will go with lows in the mid 30s north to around
40 south banking on some cloud cover and sfc winds around 5 KTs. But
if the cloud stay thin enough for more periods of time with a light
wind, could see colder temps in the low 30s or even upper 20s in NW
IL.
Sunday...More clouds and becoming more brisk as the afternoon
progresses as sfc cyclone deepens acrs the southwest plains and
ridge gradient maintains along and east of the area acrs the western
GRT LKS. East winds will be gusting over 20 MPH by late afternoon.
With increasing lift wings off vort spokes rippling out of sprawling
southwesterlies acrs western MO, will see more higher based bands of
light rain trying to spread in acrs the southwest and west possibly
up to I80, but have trouble making it past the southwestern third of
the DVN CWA especially by afternoon with encounter with still deep
ridge axis in that area. Most areas in the southwest that manage to
get some rain should get a tenth of an inch or less through 00z Mon.
High temps more in the way of upper 40s to around 50, with the
lower areas in the southwest and west from evapo-cooling effects.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday Night through next Saturday)
ISSUED AT 302 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021
Focus remains in the winter storm system that will bring rain and
accumulating snow to the area Sunday night and Monday. An active
weather pattern likely bring another early spring storm system and
potentially another round of snow Wednesday into early Thursday.
Confidence of the likelihood of significant snowfall has increased
this cycle and a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Buchanan and
Benton counties for late Sunday night through Monday afternoon.
These two counties have the greatest potential for the combination
of snowfall totals of 6 inches or more, along with blowing and
drifting snow, which extends further west and north into forecast
areas over central and northeast Iowa. Much of the local area north
of highway 30, and possibly Interstate 80 may eventually need at
least an advisory for snow that will impact the Monday morning
commute.
A large upper low over the four corners region, expected to produce
a winter storm in the rockies and severe weather outbreak across the
southern plains today, will lift east-northeast, spreading a lobe of
lift and deep moisture return over the local areas Sunday night into
Monday. Complicating this will be a strong, dry low level flow
induced by a deepening surface low over the southern plains, which
will delay the onset of precipitation, along with providing
evaporative cooling. Latest models have this process delaying the
advancement of what will initially be rain, eastward across the
forecast area until late Monday evening. The changeover to snow will
likely begin in the northwest, expanding east and south to at least
the I-80 corridor by sunrise Monday. The strongest upper level
divergence and forcing looks to be around the 12z to 18z timeframe,
when several inches of wet snow looks likely in this area. Snow to
liquid ratios will be rather low with this event due to unfavorable
thermal profiles and relatively warm temperatures in the low levels,
leading to heavy wet snow from model QPF in a .50 to .7 range.
Models also suggest the potential for freezing rain over mainly east
central IA into west central IL during the day Monday, but it may be
difficult to get pavement temperatures cold enough after the recent
warmth. Still low confidence with the details with this late season
system and further changes can be expected.
Models have another upper level low lifting out of the southwest
midweek, bringing more precipitation in the form of rain or possibly
snow Wed into Thu. Otherwise, temperatures will trend cooler than
last week, but closer to mid March normals with forecast highs in
the 40s and 50s and lows in the 20s and 30s.
&&
.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Sunday Night)
ISSUED AT 1046 PM CST Sat Mar 13 2021
VFR conditions expected through the period as mid clouds remain in
the area. Expect rain later in the period at BRL and possibly
wintry mix closer to 6z Monday across the rest of the area.
