Issued at 225 PM CDT Sat Apr 10 2021
A rather unpleasant and dreary day (unless you're a duck) across all
of eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois and far northeast Missouri with
widespread rain, cool temperatures and wind to boot. Surface
analysis showed a surface low centered only a few miles north of the
St. Louis metro, with its trailing 500 hPa low not too far behind in
east central Missouri. Copious amounts of frontogenetical forcing and
moisture were wrapping around the low, leading to moderate and at
times heavy rain across the area. Several locations as of this
writing have seen rainfall amounts over one 1.50", especially in
southeast Iowa, west central Illinois and northeast Missouri. Winds
have occasionally gusted to around 40 MPH as well as the surface low
has deepened.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Sunday)

Key Messages:
1) Rain showers gradually wind down through the daytime Sunday.
2) Wind gusts to 45 MPH can be expected at times through midnight.
The surface low, accompanying 500 hPa low and deformation zone
will be slow to move out of the area over the next 12 hours. As a
result, rain chances will persist across most of the area,
especially along and east of the Mississippi River, through midday
Sunday. An additional half to as much as one inch will be
possible, leading to final rainfall totals around 1 to 3 inches.
The good news? The gusty winds up to 45 MPH will be diminishing just
after midnight.
That being said, not all of the CWA will be seeing a washout for the
remainder of the weekend. In fact, cloud breaks to even all sunshine
are expected for portions of east central Iowa tomorrow afternoon as
high pressure aloft briefly builds across the area.
Cool temperatures will continue across the area through the
remainder of the weekend, with a slight rebound expected for Sunday.
Lows tonight will drop into the mid 40s, with highs ranging from the
mid 50s to mid 60s Sunday. The higher end of the range is favored in
southeast Iowa and northeast Missouri where sun is expected for the
afternoon.
Quiet, dry conditions are favored Sunday night. However, the
GFS/NAMnest favor some elevated rain showers mainly in east central
Iowa ahead of another approaching shortwave. However, moisture is
not as prevalent with this system vs. our current one, so do not
expect widespread coverage. Another cool night is expected with
temperatures in the 30s/40s.

Seasonably cool and dry conditions are expected through much of
next week. Broad west to east troughing will set up slightly
north of the area, from the Dakotas into the Eastern Great Lakes,
keeping the steady rain to our north and east. Although, there
could be a few showers north of highway 30 on Monday.
NBM temps are in the 50s to low 60s Monday - Saturday with lows
in the 30s to low 40s. There is a risk for frost early to mid
week, especially along and north of I-80 if skies can clear out.

Windy conditions with IFR ceilings and rain will be the rule
tonight as a strong low pressure system passes through northern
Illinois into lower Michigan. Gusty north winds from 20 to 30 kts
will gradually diminish and become more northwest late tonight
into Sunday morning. Widespread rain, moderate to heavy at times,
will impact the terminals through the night. Ceilings are likely
to drop to below, and remain below 1000 ft, resulting in IFR
conditions. A gradual improvement is expected with rain ending
early Sunday morning. BRL and CID are likely to improve to VFR by
Sunday afternoon, while MLI and DBQ are forecast to keep MVFR
ceilings in place through the afternoon. There is a potential that
these sites could also improve to VFR by late in the period.

Flood warning issued for the La Moine River at Colmar in western
IL from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday night.
The following rivers rise to action stage: Lower Wapsipinicon at
De Witt, Rock River at Joslin and Moline.
Heavy soaking rains will continue through tonight with widespread
1 to 2 inches of rain. A band of 3 inch rain amounts are likely
from northeast MO to extreme eastern IA into western/nw IL. This
will cause rises on area rivers so interests along rivers should
remain alert for updated forecasts. Small creeks and streams are
likely to rise to at least bankfull with some going into flood.
Ponding of water is also likely in urban areas and on roadways.
