.AVIATION...

Scattered to numerous diurnally driven snow showers aided by
vorticity lobe pivoting through the area can be expected during the
afternoon hours with this activity dissipating during the early
evening hours. Surface front will also sweep through the region and
bring gusty west-northwest flow with gusts to 25 knots or so this
afternoon with gradually decreasing wind speeds this evening and
especially overnight. Leftover IFR cigs should lift with the advent
of this wind and drier air mixes into the area. MVFR to lower VFR
cigs should prevail into this evening with clearing expected during
the overnight hours.

For DTW...Westerly winds will gust to 25 knots at times this
afternoon. Scattered snow showers will reduce visibilities for short
durations with a heavier snow shower or two perhaps even supporting
minor accumulations.

UPDATE...

Previous forecast remains in good shape this morning with water
vapor imagery clearly depicting the corridor of height falls
sweeping southeastward across the region as a sharp midlevel wave
marches in from the northern Lakes. This is leading to a flare-up of
ascent and subsequent cellular snow shower activity mainly across
the north this morning, but still expect scattered snow showers to
spread southward later in the day as the cooling midlevels pair with
daytime heating to produce a deep boundary layer and some surface
based instability. Minor accumulations will be possible in any
moderate to heavier showers, but temperatures approaching the mid
30s will dampen this potential some. Quite breezy today as well with
afternoon gusts kicking up to around 25 to 30 mph.

Attention remains turned to the forecast for the northern and
eastern Thumb later this afternoon/evening where there remains
potential for lake effect snow banding to move onshore. Previous
forecast outlines the setup and considerations well. After perusal
of trends among hi-res guidance this morning, signal is becoming
more convincing for the convergence to swing into Huron and Sanilac
Counties with potential for a brief period of heavy snowfall. Have
gone ahead and issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the 5pm to 1am
time frame when impacts will become most likely. A quick 2 to 4 inch
accumulation will be possible for localized areas during this
window, with potential for higher amounts if a band lingers over a
given area. The convergence feature appears quite transient and is
not expected to persist more than a few hours over any particular
location however.

DISCUSSION...

Persistent low pressure systems over the Gulf of Alaska and in the
Canadian Maritimes places Southeast Michigan under the influence of
general northwest flow throughout the next 96 hours and potentially
through 200 hours or so. The stage is set for a parade of low
amplitude shortwaves to impact Southeast Michigan periodically
during the next week. Fairly high confidence exists that Southeast
Michigan will remain on the cold side of a frontal boundary that
will waver in vicinity of Southeast Michigan.

The first item is the low height anomaly and coherent potential
vorticity anomaly that will dig out of the western U.P. this morning
and through all of Southeast Michigan by 18Z this afternoon.
Trajectory of the shortwave and a relatively broad wavelength of the
feature is expected to cause the best 1000-500mb height fall
bullseye to flash to the south and east of the cwa already by the
late morning. What remains is the heart of the closed low pressure
circulation and cold midlevel air that will settle directly across
the Lake Huron basin and into the Thumb region this afternoon and
evening. With differential cyclonic vorticity advection occurring
over the region, no surprises that the modeled UVV response is very
lackluster with little organization. So what remains is a general,
baggy, lake aggregate mesoscale trough arching back into the Lake
Huron and perhaps through Saginaw Bay and northern Lower Michigan. A
signal does exist for mesoscale convergence axis setting up from
Saginaw Bay southeastward through Huron and Sanilac counties in the
15-21Z timeframe. Enough cold midlevel air between H7-H8 pushes into
the region to steepen lapse rates and cause equilibrium heights to a
potential 10.0 kft agl. With the thermodynamic characterized as
neutral to potentially unstable, conditions will be conducive for
the mesoscale convergence forcing to churn out snow throughout the
day over the northern cwa, particularly the Thumb. A negative today
for accumulation potential will be relatively warm boundary layer
temperatures of 34 to 35 F. For the southern cwa, models are showing
a short time period during the late morning and early afternoon that
moisture will be sufficiently deep to result in development of snow
showers with daytime heating. With the best height falls screaming
across could see the flare up early then loss of activity later on
in the afternoon.

Tonight...Attention will be focused on what will become of a ribbon
of enhanced convergence/banding that will exist on the northern
periphery of a Lake Huron basin meso-low pressure circulation.
Various hires solutions keep the low pressure circulation offshore
this afternoon, but do suggest some trailing convergence sweeping
down into central and eastern portions of Huron County between 22-
02Z this evening. With the circulation to the east, its difficult to
see how some main banding would penetrate so far inland across the
Thumb. The dry NAM solution shows a good amount of mean, veered
westerly flow trajectories with no easterly flow. This bears
watching though because warm surface water temperatures of
approximately 8C will support 850 delta Ts of 15C and 700 delta Ts
of greater than 25C. Lake induced equilibrium heights are forecasted
to reach upwards of 18.0 kft agl. Did think about a Winter Weather
Advisory for Huron and Sanilac counties mainly between 22-02Z this
evening. However, operational NAM and ECMWF solutions remain fairly
lean on QPF and NBM 24hr probability to exceed 2 inches is only 40
percent. So the decision was made to allow the day shift to monitor
model trends for the possibility of a short fused Winter Weather
Advisory. Given the environment, the concern remains on the
potential for convective snowfall rates this evening potentially
reaching 1 to 2 inch per hour. At this time, the expectation is for
1 to 3 inches in eastern portions of the Thumb.

Diffuse shortwave energy with a more coherent wing of warm advection
is forecasted to push across Southeast Michigan late Monday
afternoon or early Monday evening. The timing of the forcing and
precipitation presents a problem numerically as it is very quick
hitting and is centered around 00Z. The averaging across the 00Z
decision point has seemingly resulted in lower Pops for both the
Monday and Monday evening periods. Did go ahead and increased the
guidance PoPS between 00-06Z Tuesday, felt prudent to get to likely
PoPs. Forcing for ascent will come in the form of quick hitting 292-
298 Ke system relative isentropic ascent that will move quickly
eastward. A widespread snowfall of around 1 inch is anticipated.

An increase in anticyclonic flow trajectories and an eventual
increase in geopotential heights is expected to result in ridging
Wednesday and Thursday. Notable aspect of the midweek forecast is
temperatures climbing well into the 40s.

A strong upper level jet packet is then expected to push into North
America for the middle to end of the week. Favorable orientation of
exit region dynamics with very strong polar vorticity reservoir
should support a strong low pressure system across the Midwest. Good
model continuity in depicting the low track well north of Lower
Michigan resulting in warm temperatures and warm precipitation type
early Thursday.

MARINE...

Another clipper arrives today, dropping southeast across Lake Huron
producing a tighter surface pressure gradient. Expect an uptick in
wind speeds with northwesterly gusts up to 30 knots, especially over
the southern waterways. Small Craft Advisories remain in effect for
all nearshore zones. The system will also produce a few snow showers
that could have heavy snowfall rates at times leading to brief
visibility reductions. Winds become lighter on Monday with
additional opportunities for snow during the evening and
overnight, then zonal flow ensues Tuesday.
