* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...West winds have caused water levels to fall
  to near the critical mark for safe navigation which is currently
  17 inches above low water datum. As of 340 AM, the water level
  at Toledo is 18.5 inches above low water datum and is forecast
  to continue to fall into the morning hours. Winds will diminish
  and shift to northwesterly near 10 AM today, allowing for waters
  to rise above the critical mark.

.DISCUSSION...

A clipper shortwave will track east through the northern Great Lakes
today, reaching the Straits by this evening and then crossing east
of Lake Huron overnight. This system will bring a period of snow
showers to the northern portions of the forecast area late this
afternoon and this evening with perhaps a dusting of snow in some
locations this evening mainly along and north of M-46. Temperatures
will range from the lower 30s north to mid to upper 30s south this
afternoon as gusty west to northwest flow develops as a cold front
sweeps through the area around the surface cyclone that results from
this vigorous mid/upper level shortwave.

The passage of this cold front will lead to a period of colder
weather with low temperatures nearing 20 in many locations both
Wednesday and Thursday mornings with highs on Wednesday only
recovering into the upper 20s to lower 30s area-wide. Another weaker
shortwave will cross the region on Thursday and bring another chance
of light snow showers. Any accumulation from this system will be
very minor as well as limited mainly to areas north of the M-59
corridor. Temperatures will range from the lower to mid 30s over
most of the area with upper 30s likely I-94 south or so.

Upper level ridging will be expanding across the plains during this
period with this ridge then expanding east into the area by Thursday
as an upper level trough begins to take shape over the western
CONUS. This ridge flattens into Friday as notable shortwave energy
ejects east into the upper midwest/Great Lakes from central/northern
Rockies. While model solutions for the track of the resultant
surface low associated with this energy remain somewhat divergent,
general consensus suggests a track over or just north of southern
lower MI. This would support most of the precipitation falling as
rain with just a small chance of snow/freezing rain mixed in early
Friday morning before colder low level air is dislodged.

Temperatures should climb into the 40s area-wide (possibly nearing
50 over southern areas) with this system passing on Friday with
relatively mild conditions (30s to lower 40s for highs) then
persisting over the Christmas weekend and and really on into early
next week as a wavy pseudo-zonal upper level pattern sets up with
various pieces of the western CONUS trough ejecting through the
northern tier of states during the end of this forecast period.
Medium range model solutions are all of the place in terms of timing
and to some degree intensity of these various systems so the post
Christmas forecast looks like it may become a bit challenging.

.MARINE...

Northwest wind generally at or below 15 kt quickly weakens and
becomes variable this morning as a broad area of high pressure
spreads over the Great Lakes. Wind then organizes out of the south
later today ahead of the next inbound clipper low. This system
tracks across the central Great Lakes tonight into early Wednesday,
bringing a good chance for snow showers across Lake Huron. Stronger
cold advection in its wake ensues overnight Tuesday into Wednesday
morning with gusty winds out of the northwest increasing to gale
force.

A Gale Warning has been issued for northern and central Lake Huron
including outer Saginaw Bay south to Harbor Beach in the nearshore
zones with Small Craft Advisories for the remainder of the nearshore
zones. Gusts may approach 40 knots over the open waters with gusts
closer to 35 knots on the southern periphery of the warning and
around 30 knots further south. The strongest winds will occur late
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with winds then weaken during
the afternoon as a ridge of higher pressure translates across the
Great Lakes. Wind swings around to the south by early Thursday ahead
of the next system with milder air filling back into the region.

AVIATION...

Pockets of MVFR to low VFR stratus will funnel across southeast
Michigan early this morning, attendant to a passing cold front. Wind
shift to west-northwest with the frontal passage. Brief period of
drier conditions late tonight affords a window for clear skies
across the lowest 5000 ft, before stratus expands in coverage again
throughout Tuesday. Forecast will continue to highlight prevailing
MVFR conditions by the afternoon period. Moderate southerly winds
emerge Tuesday, then turning gusty into the evening in advance of
another cold front.

For DTW...Intervals of lower cloud early this morning, then briefly
clearing. Renewed expansion in low cloud expected on Tuesday.
