.AVIATION...

Cold frontal passage late this afternoon maintaining gusty
conditions, with recent observations still indicating gusts in
excess of 30 knots remain common. Outgoing forecast will continue to
highlight stronger gust potential over the next several hours with
winds from the west, before a more meaningful decline in gust
frequency and magnitude commences after 03z. Pocket of lower stratus
carrying cloud bases near 3000 ft will linger invof of MBS during
this time. Otherwise, a period of dry and stable conditions will
maintain clear skies throughout the Southeast Michigan airspace
tonight and Friday. Winds Friday remaining more modest from the west
to northwest. High clouds thicken late Friday into early Friday
night in advance of a low pressure system expected to track across
Ohio valley early Saturday. This system will bring the next chance
for some light wintry precipitation Saturday morning.

DISCUSSION...

NEAR TERM / REST OF TODAY THROUGH TONIGHT

As of 330 PM EST...Have extended ongoing wind headlines until 8 PM
with continued gusts pushing in excess of 45 mph at times, and in
excess of 50 mph at Port Hope. Dropped Lenawee and Monroe counties
as wind gusts decrease with southward extend and observations closer
to the Ohio/Indiana border have shown more consistency with sub 40
mph gusts. Gusts should start diminishing with loss of daytime
heating, but will likely be delayed an hour or two as boundary layer
momentum takes some time to wind down. Peak gusts at times today
have exceeded well over 55 mph, with 62 mph recorded at MBS and 66
mph recorded at Port Hope.

Outside of the strong winds across the region today, some
observational sites were even reporting smoke as a result of fires
from Kansas - a testament to the strong winds with the entire low
pressure system as it traversed the central portion of the CONUS.
Anomalously warm airmass will remain in place for a few more hours
with a record high temperature set at Flint of at least 63 (breaking
the old record of 62 set in 1984) and at MBS of at least 62
(breaking the old record of 60 set in 1984).

Outside of some stratus clipping the Tri-Cities region into early
tonight, plenty of post-frontal dry air in place will ensue mostly
clear conditions tonight. Combined with increasing cold air
advection through the night, a roughly 25-30 degree temperature drop
will occur between the highs today and lows tonight - with low
temperatures settling in the upper 20s to lower 30s in the Detroit
metro.

SHORT TERM / FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT

By Friday morning, the primary cold front will have quickly moved
well off to the east towards the eastern seaboard, with a secondary
cold front/thermal trough swinging through during the day
reinforcing the colder airmass in place versus the record/near-
record warmth of the past few days. The primary cold pocket
associated with the thermal trough will be displaced to the
northeast as upper heights over the Great Lakes become more zonal
and confluent in nature with time as the day progresses, leading to
a dry day. Fair amount of sunshine should also be around as well
despite light westerly flow downwind of Lake Michigan, with forecast
soundings depicting plenty of dry air throughout the atmospheric
column including the usually pessimistic NAM. However, there
should be at least some opaque high cloud coming in from the next
system from the mid-Mississippi Valley that will be discussed
further below. 850 hPa temps hovering around 0 C with low December
sun angle should yield high temps around normal - mid 30s north to
lower 40s south.

Attention then shifts to the aforementioned system quickly ejecting
out of the upper Mississippi Valley Friday night through Saturday
evening. Low pressure is expected to develop along a warm front
extending northeastward across the northern Ohio Valley, with
overrunning precip extending northward into Lower Michigan after
midnight Friday night and continuing through at least the middle of
Saturday afternoon. There will be some northern stream PV connection
for this system to work with, although much of it will be strung out
and displaced to the north, lending to more of a progressive nature
to the track of this system, and which implicates the exact track of
the low pressure center.

The combination of strong high pressure ridging across northwest
Ontario seeping down into the eastern Great Lakes and the approach
of the developing low will allow for near-surface winds to flip
east/northeasterly Friday night, allowing for low-level cold air to
be reinforced from the north (850 hPa temps falling to -2 to -5 C
from south to north by 12z Saturday), as well as some dry air to
filter in as well per forecast soundings. However, the track of the
surface low will be an important factor to the low-level thermal
profile, especially south of the M-59 corridor as this region looks
to be the delineation line between rain/snow and possibly a brief
period of wintry mix in between. Confidence at this point is
relatively high that the cold air will hold on M-59 north, even into
the daylight hours Saturday.

Overall QPF with the system looks to be generally between 0.10-0.15
inch south of M-59, with isolated areas up to 0.25 inch near the
Ohio border, and less than a tenth north of M-59. With precip onset
occurring at night coupled with dewpoint depressions of roughly 5
degrees (lows mid 20s to low 30s, dewpoints low/mid 20s) at onset,
there will likely be an evaporational cooling component as the lower-
levels saturate rather quickly. However, there is a hint at a bit of
a warm nose in the 5-10 kft layer in the early morning period
especially south of M-59 where a period of rain/sleet could mix in
before a transition to snow occurs. While some mix may occur further
north, thinking at this point enough of a deep layer of cold air
will be in place for snow to be the main ptype when precip arrives.

Accumulation potential will be greatest where the cold air can hold
on the longest (the low track again a big determining factor with
the thermal profile), with around an inch on grassy and elevated
surfaces possible across most of the region. Best potential for
roadways and paved surfaces to see accumulations still looks to be
north of M-59 at this time, and depending on rates, would not be
surprised to see totals closer to 2-2.5 inches where snow holds on
the longest.

High temperatures struggle to reach the mid 30s during the day with
lingering rain/snow showers south, and primarily snow showers north
exiting fully by the evening hours. Dry weather then returns
Saturday night with building high pressure from the west ushering in
another colder airmass with low temperatures solidly in the low/mid
20s. The only exception will be the possibility of some lingering
lake effect snow showers off Lake Huron that may clip the eastern
Thumb with some minor additional snow accumulations.

LONG TERM / SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

The second half of the weekend into early next week will be
characterized by broad high pressure and general, broad zonal flow
aloft. This pattern will lead to general fair and benign conditions
across the region with seasonable temperatures.

MARINE...

Deep low pressure (~970 MB) has reached James Bay this afternoon.
Observations across the Central Great Lakes support all the current
headlines, with storm force gusts still occuring across the north
half of Lake Huron and gales to the south. Despite the low being so
far away, the main surge of low level cold advection is ongoing late
this afternoon, and will allow for increased mixing depths,
prolonging the strong winds into the early evening hours. Only
adjustment to current headlines was to extend the Gale warning over
Lake ST. Clair and Lake Erie until 8 PM, based on upstream obs over
southwest lower Michigan. Based on the current guidance and models,
for the 10 PM marine issuance, thinking we will convert the storm
warning to gale gale warning for northern third/half into the early
morning hours of Friday, with gale warnings dropping off south.

A surface ridge extending from high pressure over Central Canada
will build into the Central Great Lakes on Friday, leading to much
lighter winds. Another weaker low is then expected to track across
the southern Ohio Valley Saturday bringing light snow. Winds shift
from NE to NW as the low passes to the south however only a modest
uptick in strength is expected with this system with peak gusts only
topping out in the 20-25kt range. Even so, waves building over 4
feet across the southern Lake Huron basin may clip the nearshore
waters by Saturday evening, leading to possible small craft
advisories.

A strong low looks to be tracking across northern Ontario on Monday,
which should result in at least moderate (20-30 kts) southwest
winds, despite the warm advection pattern. The associated strong
cold front will then drive south Monday evening, and there is
potential for northwest wind gusts to reach and exceed 30 knots over
Lake Huron by Tuesday morning.
