.AVIATION...

An elevated frontal boundary stretching across the srn Great Lakes
is undergoing some activation early this morning. The strongest
ascent and thus better precip chances associated with this feature
will largely pass south of metro Detroit this morning and early
afternoon. Low level moistening on the cool side of this boundary
over Se Mi today will result in increasing probabilities for MVFR
based ceilings during the course of the afternoon. Low level warm
air advection will then erode the depth of the low level inversion
late this evening, suggesting an erosion of the low cloud deck, at
least temporarily before a cold front arrives early Sat morning.

For DTW...While the strongest ascent and thus better chances for
snow is forecast to move just south of metro airport, there is still
a chance for light snow between 12Z and 18Z. Slowly rising temps
during the morning will hinder accumulation potential and may even
allow for some mix with rain.

.DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

* High for ceiling 5000 feet or less today. Low tonight.

  being rain.

DISCUSSION...

Energetic WNW flow aloft with a passing 150 kt jet streak this
morning leading to a flare up of ascent along the baroclinic zone
draped from Milwaukee to central Ohio. This is resulting in a narrow
band of rain/snow that will slide into the southern forecast area
over the next few hours, though the strongest part of the band is on
track to set up just to the south farther down the elevated frontal
slope where some lower stability will help squeeze out more of the
moisture before it reaches our area. A dry layer noted in regional
model soundings from 850 to 700mb will also be a hindrance for
precip early this morning. Much of the ascent will be spent
saturating this layer before wet snowflakes and/or rain begin
reaching the ground. Best chance for precip remains in Lenawee and
Monroe County where temps currently in the mid 30s have room to wet-
bulb to the freezing mark and result in some minor snow accums on
grassy and elevated surfaces. Meanwhile, just a trace of melting
snowflakes or light rain/snow mix is likely contained south of a
line from Howell to Detroit this morning and early afternoon. Dry
conditions then prevail from mid-afternoon onward as subsidence
works in aloft behind the departing wave. Highs settle into the mid
to upper 30s today with light wind organizing out of the southwest.

A weak low pressure system tracks across the northern Great Lakes
tonight/early Saturday with local impacts likely limited to just a
wind shift late with the passage of a surface trough. Lingering low
and midlevel moisture will keep mostly cloudy conditions through the
night, holding lows in the upper 20s. Notable isentropic downglide
then depicted in plan view system relative perspective helping to
scour out remaining mid and low clouds across much of the area on
Saturday as high pressure builds in from the west. The exception
will be across the Thumb region where fresh cold advection will
bring a better chance for some lake enhanced stratocumulus to remain
prevalent. Highs in the mid 30s to lower 40s on Saturday with a
breezy west-northwest wind around 15 to 20 mph.

The influence of anticyclonic flow will favor dry conditions through
early Sunday as a stronger low pressure system organizes over the
Midwest. This occurs as a digging shortwave induces cyclogenesis in
the lee of the northern Rockies. Plenty of baroclinicity will exist
for the wave to capitalize on and the resultant surface low will
deepen considerably before reaching the Great Lakes. The warm
advection/isentropic ascent wing of the system will sweep through
during the day Sunday with temperatures rising into the lower 50s
for much of the area. Current progs indicate the main swath of
moisture advection and precip will hold off until surface temps are
above freezing, but there will be a non-zero chance for a brief
period of mixed or freezing precip Sunday morning should better
moisture and forcing arrive on the elevated warm front. Rain will
then become the main precip type for late Sunday into Sunday night
when categorical PoPs are in the forecast. Area-wide QPF will range
from 0.50 to 1.00 inches by the time the dry slot moves in early
Monday.

The system ushers in a robust cold front early Monday with 850mb
temps tumbling some 10C to the negative single digits C by Monday
afternoon. A secondary surge of cold air behind the system then
knocks temps even lower to the negative middle teens by Monday
night. The outstanding cold advection and downward momentum transfer
amidst the system's strong wind field will bring concerns for a
strong wind event Monday. Mixed layer profiles deepening to around
800mb give potential to tap into 40 to 50 kt wind in the lowest 5
kft. Model soundings suggest a brief window for surface based
instability as well which hints at convective snow showers that may
also help drag the strong wind to the surface. Did bump up the wind
forecast considerably for Monday with further adjustments likely
this weekend. Wind diminishes by Tuesday as high pressure builds in.
Cold air envelopes the region through the early week with some hints
in mid-range guidance for the next snowfall event Tuesday night.

MARINE...

High pressure ridge builds into the region briefly for the daytime
period, resulting in quiet marine conditions to end the week. Active
weather to then ramp back up late evening as approaching low
pressure brings scattered rain and snow showers and a strong low-
level wind field to the Great Lakes. Increasing confidence in gale
potential late this evening-tomorrow has resulted in the issuance of
a Gale Watch for the northern open waters of Lake Huron. Similar
scenario to the previous gale events this week, with a cold frontal
passage increasing mixing depths and tapping into 35+ kt gusts
aloft. Current trends suggest strongest gusts will occur overnight
into Saturday morning. Additional headlines will likely be needed
for the nearshore zones within the same timeframe, though will hold
off until a later forecast update. Quieter marine weather arrives
early Sunday morning, before another strong low pressure system
impacts the Great Lakes late Sunday-Monday.

HYDROLOGY...

Widespread rainfall is likely across the area late Sunday into
Sunday night as a strong low pressure system moves through the Great
Lakes. Rainfall totals ranging from a half inch to one inch will be
possible through Monday morning before a strong cold front moves
through. With relatively dry antecedent conditions, flooding
concerns are not anticipated.
