Expansive coverage of lake stratus remains entrenched this evening within cold westerly flow. Cloud bases remain locked within the 3500 to 4500 ft level during this time. Winds shift to southwesterly overnight while weakening, effectively encouraging some degree of low level drying locally as the lake moisture plume pulls back to the west. This continues to lend support in calling for a slowly clearing sky throughout the early morning hours. Window of open sky may offer a brief period of BR, but no real signal to suggest greater potential for shallow fog/MVFR visibility restrictions Tuesday morning. Periods of thicker high cloud Tuesday into Tuesday night as an elevated warm frontal transits the region, but clear skies generally favored across the lowest 5000 ft outside of perhaps a low coverage of stratocu. .DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES... * High for ceiling at or below 5000 this evening, then low overnight through Tuesday. && .PREV DISCUSSION... Issued at 324 PM EST Mon Nov 15 2021 DISCUSSION... Ongoing mid level frontal forcing is producing a narrow band of light snow across north central Indiana. This frontal system will slide across Ohio this evening, remaining well south of Se Mi. Hi res model solutions indicate a release off Lake Mi under westerly flow this evening, which will sustain a good deal of clouds and possibly a few flurries. The low level flow will then weaken and become divergent overnight with a sfc ridge overspreading Se Mi. This will allow for partial to perhaps full clearing, supporting late night min temps down into the 20s. Rapid sfc cyclogenesis is forecast in the lee of the Canadian Rockies on Wednesday, associated with a rapidly deepening mid level low. This system will force downstream ridging across the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes. In advance of the associated cold front, there will be an increase in the SW flow from the Mid Mississippi Valley into the srn Great Lakes region late Tues into Wednesday. This will drive an elevated warm front northward across Se MI late Tues/Tues night. Ample low level dry air will inhibit precip, although increasing mid and high clouds are expected. Lingering cool boundary layer temps and limited mixing depths will hold daytime highs to the 40s on Tuesday. 925mb winds are forecast to reach 45-50 knots Tues night into Wed out of the southwest, bringing 925mb temps up to +11C. Despite an influx of clouds, the low level thermal advection will still boost temps into the 50s and low 60s. While the gradient will support somewhat breezy conditions on Wednesday, the strength of the low level warm air advection and mid November sun angle will limit mixing depths, keeping the stronger winds elevated. The increased clouds on Wednesday will occur in advance of the cold front associated with the deep upper low forecast to rotate from srn Manitoba to nrn Ontario. Mid level height falls and upper jet dynamics within a 130kt upper jet streak will strengthen the deep tropospheric frontogenetical response. The degree of forced ascent will overcome somewhat limited moisture transport into the frontal system and will support increasing rain chances during the course of the day Wed, with the frontal forcing persisting into Wed night. The passage of the cold front Wed evening and associated upper trough on Thursday will advect a very cold airmass into Lower Mi; 850mb temps dropping to -10C by 00Z Friday. Per model solutions, the ascent looks to be focused on the warm side of the front, keeping the Wed night precip type all rain. There will of course be some scattered snow showers on Thursday with enhancement off the lakes as the core of the cold air moves overhead. The aforementioned upper low is forecast to remain very progressive, lifting into nrn Quebec Thursday night, leading to a rather quick departure of the cold air and a modest warming trend by the start of the weekend. MARINE... Will allow the small craft advisories to expire, as a ridge of high pressure provides a period of light winds tonight. A warm front lifting north will result in increasing southeast winds for Tuesday, with winds of 20 to 30 knots expected over the open waters of Lake Huron by Tuesday night, shifting to the southwest on Wednesday ahead of a strong cold front. Will potentially have to issue another round of small craft advisories for the southern Lake Huron basin Tuesday night as wind gusts flirt around 25 knot across the nearshore waters and waves build to around 4 feet, especially by Port Hope. It will ultimately depend how fast those winds go from southeast to south, and then southwest Wednesday morning. A very healthy dose of cold air will follow the front Wednesday night and Thursday, with westerly winds peaking out between 25 to 30 knots with the deep boundary layer mixing, as 850 MB temperatures drop to around -10 C also support snow squalls into Friday. The prospects for low end gales appears very low at this time however. HYDROLOGY... There will be a slow increase in rain coverage during the course of the day Wednesday and into Wednesday night ahead of a cold front. Despite limited moisture advection ahead of this front, the strength of the forcing will drive widespread light to briefly moderate rain across the area. Total rainfall amounts are forecast to range from two tenths to four tenths of an inch, mainly south of a Bad Axe to Saginaw line.
