Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED ADVISORY TIMES

.DISCUSSION...

A Winter Weather Advisory is being issued for Wayne, Washtenaw,
Lenawee and Monroe counties starting this evening at 10pm and ending
at 10pm Sunday. This is a long duration snow event with the most
widespread snowfall across SE MI occuring between 06-15Z where 2-4
inches is expected in the Advisory and 1 inch or less for points
north. Moisture quality and forcing decreases from north to south
through the afternoon. Trailing trough axis should keep snow falling
across the Advisory area at least through the evening hours with an
additional 1-2 inches possible for a 24 hour total in the 4-6 inch
range.

Synoptic setup remains largely unchanged from the last few forecast
cycles. A midlevel trough crossing the southern Rockies at this time
will produce a surface low over the central Plains today. A jet
streak shooting east through the trough will steer the system
through the Ohio Valley tonight into Sunday, reaching the mid
Atlantic on Monday. As has been noted for a few cycles now, model to
model and run to run consistency has been very good for a few days
now adding confidence to the going forecast and also recent trends.
Main trends to note are slightly lower QPF values especially north
of M59 and a flatter surface low track.

The mid level wave doesn't take on as strong of a negative tilt
favoring more of a neutral tilt which then doesn't pull the surface
low as far north allowing it to ride more due easterly on the
jetlet. This keeps the stronger, more persistent lower level forcing
to our south leaving southern MI with waves of elevated fgen and
vorticity ribbons advecting north through the area as they emanate
away from the weakening system. In addition, broader lift from the
mid level low in which the center is supposed to track across
southern MI on Sunday will provide some forcing.

Best overlap of moisture and forcing will come in that prime window
mentioned above from about 06-15Z as strongest ribbon of isentropic
ascent pivots over the south, PWATs approaching a half inch, a layer
of specific humidity of 3g/kg noses in around 700-850mb. After that
height falls relocate well south and east of the weakening primary
low which shunts better moisture and forcing away from the area. We
are then left with forcing becoming constricted tighter to the
deformation region of the mid level low and any trailing surface
trough lagging over the area.

In terms of snow, we are expecting a fine/small flake size. The DGZ
is above 10kft and lapse rates never get strong within it. Soundings
show saturation within the DGZ struggles at times as well with a
deep layer of nearly isothermal temps around -6C below it. For what
it's worth, it is hard to find a model that offers up better that a
10:1 ratio and local probability graphics support 0.1-0.2 inch per
hour rates.

Additional energy dipping down the backside of the trough will
attempt to keep snow going over our eastern counties through Monday
boosted by Lake Huron moisture. The approaching ridge finally wins
out and pushes the last of the snow east Monday night setting up a
quiet mid week period. Gradual warming trend through the week,
especially Thursday as upper level heights build and winds turn
southwesterly. Temperatures should reach the upper 30s Thursday and
mid 30s Friday, muted by incoming clouds and precip with the next
system. This system Friday largely looks warm producing mostly rain.

.MARINE...

Dry conditions and light north/northwesterly winds will continue
through the day as high pressure centered over the Great Lakes
gradually moves east. Winds become easterly during the evening and
strengthen in the wake of a tightening pressure gradient as low
pressure approaches the Ohio Valley late tonight/early Sunday. Winds
remain below gales, with sustained winds of 15 to 20 knots and gusts
around 25 knots possible. Strong easterly flow will produce onshore
waves reaching Small Craft Advisory criteria, with potential for
peak waves to exceed 6 feet on Sunday. The system also brings the
potential for snow over the southern half of the marine forecast
area throughout the day on Sunday, particularly for Lake Erie and
Lake St. Clair. High pressure then builds into the Midwest early
next week, bringing dry conditions along with it.
