FNT southward will steadily vacate SE Michigan between 07z and08z.
Ensuing increase in cold and dry air advection in northwest flow
subsequently lifts any lingering MVFR stratus, with the degree of
drying perhaps affording a period of limited sky fraction. Backing
low level wind field with time will draw lake moisture back into the
region midday, supporting a brief expansion of diurnal stratocu.
Strengthening late day southwest gradient turning gusty under warm
air advection.

For DTW...Window for accumulating snow ending by 08z with rapidly
improving conditions thereafter.

DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

DISCUSSION...

A respectable lake enhanced system remains on track to organize in
Lower Michigan late today and tonight. Light snow or flurries during
late afternoon steadily transition to lake enhanced segments or
clusters of heavier snow showers. The greatest concentration is
still set up for the I-96 corridor southward where accumulation
around 1 inch is most likely before the pattern exits 1 AM to 3 AM
tonight.

Mid afternoon observations indicate the subject short wave moving in
from the Midwest with a pronounced surface reflection connected to
the stalled frontal zone across southern Lower Michigan. Some light
snow or flurries precede the wave in a weak mid level combination of
fgen and isentropic ascent centered in the 850-700 mb theta-e
gradient. The frontal zone provides a channel of low stability for
the low pressure system to track along with some brief periods
deeper unstable layers possible. Satellite imagery depicts a
plentiful supply of dynamic forcing and cold advection aloft moving
in with the wave resulting in enhanced IR cloud tops downstream.
Model soundings sum this up nicely and show the combination of
steeper lapse rate aloft and deep saturation/convective depth up to
about 10 kft which fully embraces the DGZ. Low level lapse rate is
not very pronounced which may be the limiting factor for legit snow
squalls in an otherwise strongly forced scenario focused by the
surface low/trough as it slides along the stalled frontal zone.
There are still some mixed signals in hi-res models regarding
positioning of bands/clusters. The consensus scenario is for some
initiation possibly as far north as the M-59 corridor before
migrating quickly toward I-96. Greater coverage and longer duration
remains favored along and south of I-96 to the Ohio border before
the surface trough slides into Ohio 06-09Z.

High pressure builds into Lower Michigan Wednesday morning and
slides quickly eastward for the rest of the day. Dry low level warm
advection ramps up in moderate SW gradient flow but takes most of
the day to scour out the colder air mass left behind by tonight's
system. The warm front/occlusion tied to the northern Ontario system
sweeps through Wednesday night and brings some enhancement of milder
judging by low level thickness projections. A snow flurry is
possible in the frontal zone however the model QPF fields remain well
north of SE Michigan Wednesday through Thursday. High temps run t0

The low pressure system that starts Thursday in northern Ontario
moves into Quebec and pulls an arctic cold front into the Great
Lakes Thursday night and Friday. This drops temperatures down into
the lower and mid 20s by morning. Strong NW flow cold advection
continues through Friday making it a struggle for temperatures to
rebound much. Guidance offerings in the upper 20s look reasonable
based on model soundings which also indicate shallow convective
depth for lake effect snow. The soundings along with plan view
depictions of model RH suggest meaningful lake effect will be
confined to areas closer to the Lake Michigan shoreline. This passes
the eye test for a pattern of cold/dry NW flow under a building
short wave ridge Friday and Friday night. High pressure then starts
the weekend before the next low pressure system brings a round of
snow toward Sunday.

MARINE...

Steady west wind around 20 knots has supported elevated waves over
Outer Saginaw Bay and the Thumb this afternoon. Winds will wane from
west to east this evening, although an extension of the Small Craft
Advisory may be needed from Port Austin to Harbor Beach if wave
model trends continue to support occasional waves to 7 feet after
midnight. West-southwest wind veers west-northwest tonight as a high
pressure ridge axis pivots into the Great Lakes. By midday
Wednesday, flow will flip southwesterly with a steady uptick in
gradient winds as a potent low dives southeast into the region.

Central Lake Huron will reside at the interface between the exiting
high and the approaching low which will increase prevailing speeds
to the 25-30 knot range. Given low-level wind speeds around 45
knots, a favorable setup for gusts to gales expected for Wednesday
night, thus will continue the current Gale Watch. Speeds diminish
Thursday morning as the low's warm sector and trailing cold front

IN FALLING SNOW THROUGH THE EARLY MORNING HOURS...

WEATHER...

 * Snow will continue to lift across the area through the early
   morning hours.

 * The most intense snowfall will occur between the M-59 and I-94
   corridors, where snowfall rates in excess of one half inch per
   hour are possible. This will lead to a quick accumulation of
   snow in some locations, with localized amounts upwards of 2
   inches possible. Elsewhere accumulation of less than an inch
   can be expected.

 * Snow will gradually taper off between 1 and 3 am.

 * Air temperatures will range between 28 and 32 degrees.

IMPACTS...

 * Accumulating snow may lead to slippery roads particularly on
   bridges, exit ramps and overpasses.

 * Visibility less than one mile within any heavier bursts of
   snow.
